Subscribe To Comments Plugin For WordPress

For awhile now I have been meaning to install a Subscribe To Comments plugin here on the ClickNewz blog. Not only was it on my original task list for blog updates, but it has been requested over and over by readers.

My apologies for it taking so long… I ran into some roadblocks. It turns out all the errors I was getting were due to my version of WordPress. After some searching, I figured out that I had to upgrade to the latest release in order to get the plugins to work…

To backtrack, I decided to install the plugin that Teli Adlam uses and recommends: Subscribe to Comments Plugin for Wordpress. Teli is the WordPress Queen (yes, I am officially crowning you, Ms Teli! ;) ) and to be honest, anytime I need advice or a recommendation on something WordPress related I do a search on google for “whatever I need + Teli Adlam” – like this.

The plugin she recommends is really cool. You can see it in action by scrolling down to the section below where you can leave a comment.

Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address!

The latest version also allows you to view the list of people who are subscribed to posts on your blog, and you can also see a list of the most “subscribed” posts. VERY useful!

So of course I wanted to install it, and I was quite frustrated with the errors – and then with the daunting task of upgrading to the newest release of WordPress  . My concern being that if things didnt go smoothly I’d be getting in over my head (with plugin updates, theme compatibility issues, etc).

Fortunately I manage an active discussion forum that is chock full of savvy e-Biz professionals (whew!). Chris Boaze stepped up to the plate and offered his services as soon as he caught wind of my “situation”.

A couple of messages back and forth, and later in the day he had everything updated and installed and running like a dream! I must say, if you EVER need to outsource technical tasks or web development projects, ask Chris for a free quote – he is fast, efficient, and affordable!

So there you have it – you may now (finally!) subscribe to comments here on ClickNewz. Much thanks goes out to Teli and Chris for their recommendations, support & help on getting this accomplished!

Best,

Terry great new plugin and thanks for sharing. Now, what plugin do you use to make all your comments viewable without having to click on them to read? I love this option and like you were before you found your plugin, it is one of my original tasks with my blog to set up and I still haven’t done it.

    Hi Tawnya,

Are you publishing your blog with WordPress? If you give me a link I can take a look – I didnt find it on the vanetworking site. It’s just how it shows on individual post pages with WordPress I believe…

    Thanks Lynn!
Now, what to do about those pesky, pesky comment spammers? I had the Math Comment Spam Protection and a Subscribe to Comments plugin installed but, I don’t know if they were working against each other or what.

Wanna hear this? It was allowing spam comments through (although very few) however, legitimate comments were getting all kinds of error messages. So sadly, I unistalled both. Maybe I need to contact Chris too. Installing them, I have no problems … but, if anything at all goes wrong, then I’m stumped.

Marco, I’ll certainly be taking a look at your post too … thanks for sharing! I took listed the plugins I recently installed. (If you’re interested in checking them out, be sure to check out my comments too because I shared what I’ve thought about them so far.)

So Lynn what do you do about comment spam or do you just deal with the delete button? I’ll be sure to check back with this great new feature you’ve added ;)

    Thanks!

    Hi Anita,

I use Akismet and HIGHLY recommend it. You can read more about it here:

Recommended by Teli also ;) And works like a charm!

  7. Oops! Guess it would have helped to take the time and search. Thanks Lynn – I’m activating Akismet now!

Anita: I use Akismet too and it was a godsend…no more spam! YEAH!

    Hi Tawnya,

When I view an individual post at your link, I see the comments just below it on the same page without clicking anything. I dont see them on the main page, but I dont have them on mine either… So I am not sure what you meant?

  10. On my site, all I see is a link that says 3 Comments which I have to click on to read the comments. On your blog here, people don’t have to click to read them, they can just visually see them under each post (hope I am making sense HA!)

  11. Lynn Terry says:

I see that on your main page… but not if you click the post title and go to the post’s own page on your domain – then I see the comments right below it.

If you go to the main page here (clicknewz.com) you will see a comments link below each post listed there… so our blogs work exactly the same from what I can see.

  12. Duh moi, I must be having a blonde moment, your blog shows the comments the same as mine. I wish though that one could just have the comments automatically show without having to click to view them you know? Have a great day Lynn :)

  13. Lynn Terry says:

Yeah, you really wouldnt want them to show on the main page though…

  14. Anita says:

Yeah, I think I have to agree with Lynn. I’m not sure I’d want all my comments showing on the main page either. That could begin to get too long and too much scrolling for people who aren’t interested in a particular post.

Just my 2 cents though ;)
