Not necessarily. And a couple of weeks is much better than a couple of days. The key is to not make it look "spammy" - though, lets be realistic - that's what we are doing: trying to manipulate the search results.

As long as it is all relevant (page to page) and the pages linking to you are high quality or authority, you shouldnt have a problem. And I'm not sure there's an actual penalty, but with Google in particular that it may cause your site to be "sandboxed" for review.

As I said earlier, I'm no search expert - but "slow and steady wins the race" certainly applies here from my understanding and personal experience.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. :)

Okay, with that in mind, here's a question. If I place a new website and it gets posted about in 100 + topic relevant blogs and forums - and linked to in those blogs and forums - in 1-2 weeks time or so, would Google be suspicious of that and penalize the site's ranking?

No no - you're fine Cynthia :D I value your feedback and am glad you brought it up because its a great question.

I just listened back over that segment in the audio and I see what you mean. I was talking about getting quality inbound links and establishing good (top 10) rankings in Google.

There are two things at play there, which are my reason for saying "it will take some time, its not an overnight thing". One is that Google has "the sandbox" and new sites tend to fluctuate wildly in the SERPs their first 3-6 months.

The other is that it will literally take you 90 days (or more) to get 100-200 quality inbound links. Getting 100 inbound links in 24 hours will throw up a red flag with Google. The incoming links need to appear and grow naturally, instead of appear in large numbers overnight - which would appear UNnnatural (and tip them off that you may be trying to manipulate the search results). Make sense?

You can certainly get indexed right away, and can even begin ranking well for obscure terms even - but good consistent placement for more competitive keyword phrases *does* take a little time. Nothing specific of course - but 3-6 months of getting established and growing links is a great start.

Oh Lynn - I just reread my initial comment about this. I didn't mean to criticize and I'm sorry if my question came across that way. I was just curious to know why there would be a specific time obstacle to make rank progress because I'd never heard of that before. I'm no SE expert either but I certainly defer to your wider experience in this and I assume you are basing your answer on your own experiences. Just wondering why it would be a 90 day process. Thanks!

Hi Lynn.

The specific part about a minimum 90 days for ranking is around the 34-35 minute range.

There's more in your reply to the question that follows (around 00:36:00), saying 3 months, six, months, nine months to really get in good in the search engines.

It's an interesting topic. Thanks for any clarification. :)

Perhaps I misunderstood what you said. I'll go back and listen and let you know.

It was a great webinar. I used your technique to research for my BANS sites I'm working on. Thanks so much for laying it all out so simply for us! :)

Hi Cynthia,

If you could tell me the point in the audio recording where I made that comment (such as the minute range, as shown on your audio player), I'd love to listen back over it to see exactly what I said. I'll run through it myself too, but if you happen to know about where it was that would help a lot.

I am not a search engine expert by any means, and I dont recall having ever made a factual statement like that - referring specifically to how long it would take to rank in the top 10. Though I may have brought the point across that way or been misleading - but it certainly wasnt intentional. As I said, I'll have to listen over that and see...

You could very well rank in the top 10 for less competitive keyword phrases rather quickly, longer for more competitive keyword phrases - and your rankings could fluctuate a lot in the first 90 days or so.

Indexing is just a matter of getting links from established sites (or even just one). Stability in the SERPs does take a little more time.

Again, sorry if I was unclear or misleading. I'll listen back over it myself while I wait to hear back from you.

Lynn, I listened in and had a question on one comment you made about ranking in the top ten of the search results pages. You said it would take a least 60 days (or did you say 90? I've forgotten now) to be able to get in the top ten. Why are you saying matter-of-factly it's not possible to do so in a month or less?

Thank you - glad you all enjoyed it! Keyword Research is one of my favorite topics, and so I really enjoyed sharing my 20-minute niche discovery method.

If you left the webinar with any unanswered questions, be sure to post them in the Market Research (or appropriate) category at my discussion forum - I check in there daily ;)

As usual, great webinar. As you know, keyword research has been a thorn in my side, it's been quite the learning process for me but with your guidance through the webinars and your Elite group over on the SSWT forums, I think I am finally starting to get it. Thanks again for everything you do.
