How To Remove Yourself From Google

January 7th, 2008 · 13 Comments ·

Open a new window and do a quick search on Google: Type in your name and state. Or just type in your phone number (including area code). Most people will find their home address listed right there on Google - along with a map to your front door.

Google will even offer to give driving directions to your house  .

You may not think this is a very big deal… until someone shows up at your home. And with very little information to start, and a few quick searches, that is exactly what can happen…

Even your PO Box address can give enough information for someone to do a search that gives them a map to your front door. All they need is your name and the state that you live in.

Take a moment to check and see what Google says about you. If you dont like it, use their form to remove your listing.

Best,

The credit actually goes to my mother, who sent me the link - knowing how much I dislike these crazy listings. I cant imagine who ever thought THAT would be a good idea :P . Yellow page listings yes… but white page listings with maps? Give me a break!

Scary…Doesn’t look like they have done this for Australia yet…They haven’t made it that obvious here as yet…Matter of time I guess…

    Thanks for that Tip Lynn.

Here’s another tip. If you place your personal information (Name, state etc..) in a image file and post it on websites. Google or any other search engine will not be able to index it. The file name and not the information in it is indexed. Hope this is clear.

Good tip, Wes. That does help with personal information turning up in searches… however, the data that is showing up in these listings is coming from the databases of phone companies.

Thanks! This is helpful info. Great tips as usual.

O golly, one more thing to add to incipient paranoia. I’m still shocked at seeing my recent Amazon purchases show up when I googled my name.

Where is the form to shut that down?

Maybe here is a new service. For a monthly fee my privacy search engine will search the web for your info and seek to protect it . shut them down and so on…

    Just feeling whimsical.

Goodness this Google brouhaha. I remembers the late Gary Halbert, mentioned this same thing but he specifically shares a secret how copywriters can use it to make money.

Then sometimes last year, I read another marketer alerting people of its merits and possible ‘danger’ and shown, just as you’ve just done, how to remove themselves from Google address.

Anyway, in either case, I never have to worry at all. You know why? I don’t reside in America, I am in Africa and Google don’t even know much about my country talk less my personal data and address :)

Interesting, I think I will remove myself from there, as I don’t anyone coming to my home as happened with you :p , Thx for tip

Thanks for the heads up Lynn,

I did a search, and fortunately, no address or telephone number. I did, however, discover there are and have been others with my same first name last name.

Recently I was watching the final season of Third Watch. On one episode a “vampire” got mad at Detective Yokis, so he did a search and found her home address. I was rather skeptical while watching but now I see it highly possible.

    Hmmmmm
