Affiliate Summit West 2008

February 13th, 2008 · 30 Comments ·

My flight and hotel room are booked already, but now I’m on the fence about actually going… I’m talking about Affiliate Summit West taking place this month - February 24-26 - in Las Vegas.

The event would be a blast no doubt, as I’d have an opportunity to hang out with Kim Rowley and Rosalind Gardner - not to mention meeting hundreds of cool folks in the affiliate industry. Oh, and Jason Calacanis is giving the Keynote.

But like I said, I’m on the fence. I need to make a decision this week and either cancel the trip or get prepared to pack up and go. And I’m torn…

As you know, I just closed on my new house at the end of last week. The way it has worked out, the dates for closing and moving have been tentative - to the point of keeping me on my toes for an actual moving date.

If all works out as expected, I should be moving in the next two weeks. Of course, that runs smack dab into the block of time I’ll be in Vegas for the Affiliate Summit event :?

Could I pull it off? Probably - if I knew the exact moving date for sure and could plan everything out in advance. As it stands it could be anytime between now and March 8th, but I’ve been told its going to be much sooner.

So my options are to really hustle and fit it all into the last couple of weeks of this month - the packing, the trip and the move - or to just go ahead and rent the house I’m in for another month (March) and take my time with it all.

Obviously I wouldnt mind to save the money and of course go ahead and get moved into my cool new house *grin* - but at the same time the moving dates are not even firm yet. The previous owner had up to 30 days to vacate, but is planning to be out much sooner.

Ideally I’d just do it all in the next two weeks - including my trip out to Affiliate Summit - if I could pull it off without a hitch. Ahhh decisions - lol - I’ll keep you posted ;)

In the meantime, I’m curious - What would you do?

Best,

I think as of right now, I’d be planning on taking my trip and renting the current house another month. If the previous owner is only planning on being out of the house and doesn’t actually HAVE to be, things could change. I’d sure hate to miss a great trip and be sitting at home waiting to make a move that didn’t happen as scheduled.

I think I would rent your house for another month, go to the conference and then take the extra time to be able to paint the new house with no furniture in it. It is much more relaxing to move without a strict deadline.

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 9:19 am

Both good points. The house is move-in ready (no painting necessary) and I am anxious to get moved in… still giving it some thought ;)

  • Katherine Reschke // Feb 13, 2008 at 9:36 am

I would definitely rent the house for another month. All kinds of things can hold up a closing and you really don’t need the stress

    Lynn,

Take your time and go to the conference.

I know you’re like a kid at Christmas about this and I would be too. I know I couldn’t wait to move into our home.

Tough decision. Moving is very stressful and exhausting and I wouldn’t want to take a trip in the middle of a move. On the other hand, if you cancel the trip and then find out everything else is postponed, how disappointing will that be?

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Ironically I just got the call - I can take possession on the 22nd :D

  • Quinn // Feb 13, 2008 at 1:37 pm

I say don’t stress out about it. It’s yours. Take your time. When you get back it’ll be sitting there waiting for you. I would even go so far as to pay for half of March, if possible, move small stuff at your leisure, get your ‘posse’ together over a week-end and have furniture-moving party. Surely you know several young hunks who’d jump at the chance to help you out for free pizza and an ‘audience’ with you!

I repeat, don’t stress out. Make it breezy and fun. After all, it’s gonna be the last time you move for quite some time, right?

Enjoy the conference. Just don’t forget us ‘little people’ along the way.

    Lynn,

Six years ago when I quit my job and began
working full time from home my first goal was
    to be debt free.

Every penny I made went to paying everything
off. It took a little over five years to reach that
    goal.

Now I have no house payment, no car payment
and no credit card debt. I am totally debt free.

It took a lot of sacrifices. No trips, very few
meals out, no buying anything that was not an
    absolute necessity.

Take your house payment, your car payment
and any other debt and subtract it all from your
    monthly overhead.

Now imagine that for the rest of your life it will
be like that and you will never be in debt again.

My suggestion is to stay home, get ready to
move and put all the money you would spend on
the trip to Las Vegas to paying off your new home.

A couple a days ago I mentioned in my post
about your new house that I also have a white
picket fence. I posted a picture on one of my
sites. Click my name to see my white picket
    fence.

Being debt free in an incredible feeling.

Hard to say because moving into your own house is pretty exciting!

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Beautiful, Paul! And great advice ;)

And LOL Quinn - I think I’m going to have to hire a moving crew

I’ve pretty much decided to cancel the trip and just focus on getting moved and staying on track with my current projects. I know me, and too much at once will just leave me frazzled. There are other great trips coming up that I can look into once I get settled, of course.

  • Jason Moffatt // Feb 13, 2008 at 3:36 pm

    Lynn,

I’m going to be arriving in Vegas on the 26th for a different marketing engagement, and I’d be delighted to finally meet you in person if you do decide to go.

Go go go go go go go go go !

    Cheers,

    Jason

I would avoid paying rent and mortgage for March plus the expenses of traveling to Las Vegas. So I would cancel the trip. You’re already going to encounter moving expenses (movers, boxes, packing tape, etc.) so if you can avoid Las Vegas expenses at the same time it will be easier on the pocketbook. Moving is a pain anyway so the sooner you knock it off the better. My only caveat about canceling would be to take into consideration any fees you’ll incur for canceling your flight and hotel in the decision.

    Lynn,

Hey, if you’re not going to Vegas, does that mean you’re going to come to Knoxville on the 23rd??? :P

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 5:42 pm

LOL as much as I’d like to Stacie, I imagine I’ll be moving that day. It will be hard to leave town with the keys in my hand just the day before! :D

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Jason - It’d be a tight fit with the schedule, as I leave Vegas that same evening, but if I end up going (doubtful at this point) I’ll definitely let you know so we can work something out ;)

  • Stacie Bennett // Feb 13, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Lynn - lol, sorry had to tease a little. It would be great if you could, but I wouldn’t either in your postition. I just hope I don’t have to stand outside in the cold by myself, ;)

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 13, 2008 at 5:56 pm

LOL I’m quitting :D Been “patchin” it!

  • Stacie Bennett // Feb 13, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Are you really?! Good for you.

First Rick, now you. Might have to quit myself or stand in the cold by myself :)

  • Robert // Feb 14, 2008 at 11:23 am

    First Things First, Lynn.

Whatever that means to you in your life right now…

    ;-) Robert

    Hi Lynn,
I would go to the meeting since you ALREADY HAVE reservations and arrangements to go AND since it’s only a 3 day conference and you could start moving on the 27th. It shouldn’t take more than 2 days to move in and that way you make the meeting which is ONLY once a year with all the contacts and just MOVE 4 days later and still get out before having to pay rent again. OR, just make a deal with your landlord to pay for 1 to 3 days more rent into next month, then move. If the landlod doesn’t allow it, like I said before, you can always Moon Him and tell him to Kiss Your Bandwidth and you STILL HAVE 2 days to move when you get back. Sounds like you’ll be missing valuable contacts if not going since someone has already contacted you above about meeting up. THAT alone could be worth money in the bank, down the road! You’re only putting off the move for 4 days and you may be in the house 40 years! Somethimg to think about anyway!

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 15, 2008 at 4:46 pm

    Thank you Robert :D

All great points here, and it was not an easy decision… but I cancelled my trip today and am focusing on getting moved & settled into my new home. Events are always going on, and I can hit Affiliate Summit in Orlando this summer when I’m more settled in.

  • Chris Jacobson // Feb 15, 2008 at 5:19 pm

I’m heading out there too Lynn! It should be a great time.

  • makingyouricher review scam // Feb 16, 2008 at 4:58 am

Lynn for me it is simple. This is what I will do, “or to just go ahead and rent the house I’m in for another month (March) and take my time with it all.”

Since it is possible to shift moving to your new house a bit, why don’t you take your time then? You know, the Affiliate Summit West will show you some new ideas and strategies to move your business to the next level and even share with others. So I suggest that you don’t miss it.

Anyway, I am also aware of your inner enthusiasm for your new house and how it affects your kids. Please let’s know your final decision. :)

Descisons like this are so hard, particularly because events like this can be so important to your career. Meeting people and networking is so key to your online success, it can make a WORLD of difference.

I would love to be going this year myself and it makes me a little depressed that, for personal reasons I cannot go, so I know Lynn, how you must be feeling. Anyway, for what it’s worth, I say take care of your family and home first, after all there is next year — and other events.

I find it strange that Jason Calacanis is doing the keynote at an affiliate conference. Sure, he’s a smart guy and done some cool things, but is he really into the world of affiliate marketing?

  • Lynn Terry // Feb 18, 2008 at 8:19 am

Yes, I thought the same thing. My original blog post about that can be found here: http://www.clicknewz.com/1070/jason-calacanis-keynote-at-affiliate-summit-west/

That was actually the main reason I was going to Affiliate Summit - to cover the Keynote with a press pass.

  • Anon // Feb 20, 2008 at 3:06 am

Here’s a VERY important issue for action at the Affiliate Summit:
It’s to do with Clickbank’s CBU!
Here’s a copy of my message to CB:

I am utterly appalled at your gall in launching CBU!!!! What absolute arrogance!!!
Firstly you seek to scam newbies, charge a huge fortune in the process, then still suck the life out of them by having Them pay for traffic which YOU benefit from! Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable!!!
Furthermore, you are competing directly with your very own customers, those who sell their products through you. Wisdom 101 - Do not bite the hand that feeds you!
You should be ashamed to have even thought to do this!
I wish you huge embarrassment and spectacular failure!
You can dismiss this lightly, but be sure I’ll be posting the same message wherever I can find the opportunity. I’m certain I’m not alone in my feelings! I hope you get tons and tons of similar feedback and abandon this ridiculous scam with apologies to those you suck in through their innocence and lack of understanding.
    Shame on you!!!

  • Alan // Feb 20, 2008 at 9:26 am

    What’s all that about (CBU)?

  • Tawnie // Feb 20, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Looks like he was trying to work a totally off topic message into the Affiliate Summit topic!
He must be looking for blogs to post his OFF TOPIC message on. Well, We’ve been SCOLDED and we have no involvement whatsoever in this subject, but I’m siting her cowering and whimpering from the Scolding to CB. CB you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    NAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHTY!!!!!!
