BABB-28: Empty Your Inbox Today

Today is Day 28 of the Be A Better Blogger series. We’re using the outline offered by Collis Ta’eed in an article titled 31 Days To Becoming A Better Blogger, and our topic for the day is:

Day 28. Process your email inbox to empty. You’ll need to answer all of your emails eventually, so why not do it today? An empty inbox is a welcome sight for any blogger...

Oh boy... this one is going to be a doozy for me  . I just glanced over at my Inbox and I currently have 1271 emails that need my attention. Confirmations and junk mail are automatically filtered out, so that number represents the actual number of messages I need to process.

For todays task I'll be referring back to my own advice on the topic:

5 Steps To Reclaim Your Inbox And Stop The Information Overload Madness!

And also plan to check out this post by Timothy Ferriss:

10 Steps To Become An Email Ninja

Fortunately many of the emails currently in my Inbox can be processed rather quickly. Much of what I subscribe to can simply be deleted or moved to another folder in case I want to browse it at a later time. I doubt I'm going to miss anything major I cant easily look up if/when I need it.

For the rest, I use a copy & paste file to quickly process emails regarding orders, or the types of replies that dont require a personal response.

It will still be a bit of a job to get through this task today. What about you? I'm curious how many emails you have sitting in your inbox, and whether you feel this is something you'll get done today?

I'm off to get started on it myself. Who knows - we might just find a nugget of gold hidden in our inbox ;)

  1. LOL, Lynn, you asked:

"I’m curious how many emails you have sitting in your inbox, and whether you feel this is something you’ll get done today? "

My inbox has 2592 emails that need my attention, so while I can't possibly take care of all of them, I'll attempt to at least go through 1/4 of them. I haven't cleaned my inbox in ages, so a lot of the stuff is so old, it's not even relevant anymore.

    Thanks for the "push"!

  2. Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Good luck to you. I'm still working on mine as well. Speaking of which, I think I have one from you in there ;) See ya in the Inbox!

Oh, My! I have about 1000 to file, but the 100-200 that come in daily are easily fileable or doable (or deletable).

Just recently, I've pruned down the lists I receive mail from. I've had a time of it not wanting to miss a bit of what I can learn from the email I receive.

Now I'm starting to become more selective, using the delete key without fear! I know where I can go to get the right information now. It feels good.

I'm also doing some email customer support for a colleague, and have been using Shortkeys to easily insert text into personalized emails.

Thanks, Lynn, a good topic to bring up. I'm listening to Tim Feriss' 4hrwkwk audio book (from the library).

I like the concept of just 3 email checks a day. I really liked his take on speed reading. I must have listened to that section 5 times today. Now to do it!
    Best,
    Mary
PS Congrats on the 2 year mark!

  4. Thank you Mary ;)

There are some good concepts in Tim's book, but I didnt particularly like it personally. I have a review posted here at ClickNewz, which you can find if you type "ferriss" into the search box at the top right. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it as well ;)

  5. Hi Lynn,

I have been deleting my inbox for weeks now. Yesterday I deleted 300 emails. I have to delete and cull those emails coming in because I need to clear some room on my computer. It is running slow. Next is RSS feeds. I think the hardest bit is desciding what are the important emails subscriptions that I need.
