Weekend Hiatus

October 12th, 2008 · 9 Comments ·

I decided to take a little road trip, and spend the weekend in Chattanooga. I’m writing to you from a terrific little sushi bar on Market Street called Sekisui.

They have outdoor tables on a 2nd floor balcony with free wi-fi access, which is absolutely perfect on this Tennessee afternoon. Chattanooga is only 90 minutes from me (just over the mountain, as I like to say) and so it makes for any easy trip and a great getaway.

While here I met with a few friends in the area and also took some personal time for reflection and brainstorming. It has been a nice (and much-needed) break.

With Fall setting in, I decided to order a few new books to dig into in the coming months. All four of these titles were personally recommended to me by friends I’ve met and talked to on my recent trips.

I started with two titles by Ben Mack (@BenMack) which were recommended by Donna Fox (@DonnaFox).

Think Two Products Ahead is a book on branding, and has been recommended by several people as a phenomenal book. Authored by Ben Mack, it also has a foreward by Mark Joyner and afterword by Dave Lakhani.

Poker Without Cards, also by Ben Mack, has been described as “his autobiography” by one and “a brain thriller” by another. Definitely piqued my curiosity!

I added two more books to my Amazon order - Portable MFA in Creative Writing which would be of interest to writers of any kind, and Persuasion: The Art of Getting What You Want by Dave Lakhani (@DaveLakhani):

Meeting people and communicating online at sites like Twitter.com is a great experience in itself. But reading their books is a way to take that intro to a whole new level.

Two thoughts: Twitter sells. I cant tell you the number of times I’ve visited sites or purchased products after coming to know publishers via tweet.

And second - a book is, simply put, the best business card you could possibly have.

I think its high time I published one of my own.

Dont get too excited. Its not going to happen tomorrow or anything. But its a thought on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. Not a first, but definitely one I am getting more serious about.

In the meantime, check out the titles above by clicking on the covers - and also the authors. You can use the name links to get to know them via Twitter.com. If you havent already signed up, you can do that for free. Be sure to follow me there as well, of course ;)

Best,

    Howdy Lynn

When my wife and I were driving a truck we used to Love staying in Chattanooga.

Many times we just flat out told the dispatchers we were taking some time off, and then turned off the cell phones, rented a car and enjoyed our time off.

That is one thing I miss about not being on the road anymore.

I’m so glad that you took time away this weekend. Good for you.

I have to laugh because I’m sitting here making my Amazon order list and thought I should come by your blog to search for books you have recommended in the past. Funny!

I wonder what you think of The Adsense Code by Joel Comm. I haven’t searched your blog for a review yet so I might just find it after I post this but I was just wondering. Didn’t know if the book might be way over my head or not (you know me LOL).

    Thanks!

I just got home. What a great weekend - I’m like you, Kevin. I absolutely love Chattanooga. It is the perfect place to go if you just want to get away, or get out and do something. And crossing the mountain makes for a beautiful drive this time of year!

Angie - I would download Adsense Secrets (the ebook version) for free at Joel’s site: http://www.adsense-guide.com . If you have the option not to get the monthly magazine - take that option. You dont need The Top 1% mag, but just the Adsense Secrets 4 download ;)

Of course, being an Elite Member I can help you personally with your Adsense optimization, but that’s a good resource to have for reference too.

Thanks Lynn. It looks like I would have to enter all my credit card info to get it and then have to call to cancel the other stuff. I’ll pass on that and just come to the elite group but was thinking the actual Adsense Code book might be something I could read while on the go. We’ll see.

    I appreciate your help.

I was afraid that might be the case. I know that Joel recently changed the offer. I have The Adsense Code (paperback edition) but I havent compared it to the ebook version so I cant really say. I’ll check with you in the private forum though and we’ll take it from there ;)

Isn’t is ironic that when we embark upon a weekend hiatus, we try to ensure that we remain connected through wifi? I need to find a place to retreat that completely disconnects me from technology!

  • Lynn Terry // Oct 15, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Ahh but that was my point :D

My hiatus was from the home office, and for a fresh change of scenery! Very productive actually, and I enjoyed some personal time as well.

    Love that place.

    Me too, Moriah :D

It was great to meet you at BlissDom ‘08 in Nashville today. I look forward to connecting for lunch the next time I’m in Chatt!
