Influential Women of Social Media

Earlier this week Ron Hudson of Immediate Influence posted a list of the 50 Most Powerful & Influential Women in Social Media that made quite a splash. I was honored to top that list at #4, which was ranked according to traffic and inbound links…

The numbers, and therefore the rankings, are not accurate by any means. I have 100x the number of links noted there (according to Yahoo Site Explorer), and many of the women listed have multiple domains.

I say that only to make the point that the entire list is incredibly valuable, no matter which way you read it – top to bottom or bottom to top. And if you read the comments, you’ll find even more that were not included in the original list.

It has been said that women tend to do exceptionally well with Social Media as a marketing tool, due to the social nature of their gender. That’s not to say that it doesnt work for men as well, but that women tend to have a natural talent for the social networking aspect of these Web 2.0 properties.

Interestingly, this Top 50 list comes on the heels of a hot gender debate in our industry, and just as interesting is that the list was published by Ron Hudson (a man). One point that I made in that post (see link above) was about leverage:

Instead of trying to battle the differences, I think our industry would do well to embrace them. Women could do well by aligning themselves with their male counterparts, as would men by realizing and leveraging the natural strengths of female marketers.

Ron Hudson was smart to post such a timely list, given the ’stir’ in the market over the recent gender talk. A brilliant example of capitalizing on hot topics. I made the comment to him also that he could easily get 50+ quality inbound links just by creating a badge or graphic for his Top 50 list.

This is a highly valuable resource for anyone that is looking to gain more exposure. The 50+ women mentioned all have a strong voice in the industry, and a substantial following.
