2009 is coming to a close, with the New Year only days away.
I just returned from Las Vegas, where I spent the holiday with my two children. My son's girlfriend joined us on the trip too, which was great fun.
I took them all to see the Blue Man Group for Christmas. I got to see the show last year while in Vegas on business, and I couldn't wait to take my teens back to see it!
We got home late Christmas night, and I have spent the weekend feeling refreshed - and super motivated about the year ahead! We were talking about motivation just last week, and something interesting occurred to me while I was traveling home...
I have the ideal lifestyle. MY ideal lifestyle, that is. One that I intentionally and strategically created. And I am completely and absolutely in love with it!
There are two types of responses that I get when I share glimpses into my lifestyle with others, here and elsewhere. People are either inspired or envious. It either motivates them, or discourages them.
A lot of people believe I got lucky, that I'm smarter than them, that I was in the right place at the right time, or some other such thing. The truth is that I had it rough. Rougher than most, even. I had to work especially hard, through very difficult circumstances, to create the lifestyle that I have today.
One that has allowed me to be at home with and for my children for the last 13 years, that put me in a position to buy my dream home, that gives me the freedom to travel the world and do incredibly cool stuff with my teens.
Still, I agree that it's easier to believe you can't create a successful online business, and quit before you start, than it is to put in the same effort I did to make it happen.
At any rate, some of those recent responses reminded me of a time in my life when I was on the other side of the fence. One in particular, when I was working as a sales rep for a wealthy entrepreneur back in the 90's. A woman who married into success, straight off the streets.
The new class suited her well. But even though she wore fur coats and drove a Lexus, there was something about her I could relate to. Even more so after she shared her "rags to riches" story with me over lunch one day.
I chose to be inspired.
There were no parallels between us except that she went from Point A to Point B, and I was standing at Point A looking for ways to get to Point B. That was it. I had a combined family of four children, she had none. I lived in a small rented house in the country, she lived in a brand new extravagant home in the city. I was a low-wage employee, she was a business owner...
Still, I was inspired. It was then that I started planning, started looking for ways to make dramatic life change. It took me a couple more years and a couple more jobs, but once that seed was planted options & opportunities began to materialize.
Not out of thin air of course, but in my mind.
Nobody believed in them but me. They said I was crazy, told me it would never work, called me a fool for quitting my job to start a business that would undoubtedly flop. That idea-turned-business did almost 6 figures the first full year...
Fast Forward to today, almost 13 years later, and I cannot imagine what my life would have been like if I had listened to the collective "they". Or if I had envied my wealthy boss, instead of being inspired by her story.
Had I chose to envy her instead, a woman who truly did luck out, it would not have affected her lifestyle at all. Only mine.
And that's the bottom line - we are each in control of our own future.
I'm sure I had my dose of envy here and there, I was just inspired more. I also had doubt, frustration and even anger. Sometimes negatives can be powerful forces in your life. Heck, just proving "they" wrong kept me going at full speed for years. 😛
As we head into a new year, a new decade even, now is a good time to take stock of your thoughts and feelings. Goals are great, and definitely necessary, but it's the thoughts and feelings that are the driving force. Those are the things you take action on, or give preference to in your daily life.
And that's my question for you: What are you thinking?
Positive or Negative, let it be your driving force. Get in tune with it, and take daily action towards building a successful online business and creating your ideal lifestyle. Accept the fact that it doesn't happen overnight, or within 30 days even, but that it's a process - and that you have to go through every single step to earn the things you want out of life.

We rode the New York New York roller coaster, the girls did the Stratosphere thrill rides, we all saw the Blue Man show at the Venetian, we enjoyed steaks & starbucks & breakfasts in bed, snuck into a karaoke bar, goofed off on the Vegas Strip, and just had an all-around non-stop good time. 😀

It's so very true. Getting a handle on my responses and learning to use them to my advantage was a bit of a hurdle for me. As humans we're just naturally full of random thoughts and feelings. Not all of them productive or even useful.
I remember a few years ago when I came across something from one of my "competitors" that just knocked the wind right out of me. I spent a few hours stewing over it before I finally decided it wasn't affecting anyone but me - and that I was in a position to do something about it. Very empowering once you gain control over it!

There's a huge lesson hidden in that statement, about earning your right to success and about being prepared for it when you achieve it.
I like to reference the stories of lottery winners, and how the windfall ultimately had a devastating effect on their lives. It's nice to dream about winning a million dollars, but most people are not at all prepared to manage it properly.
Earning a million dollars is quite a different story, as the process of earning it matures and prepares you for it with steady personal growth along the way.

Well, my motivation is a mixture.
I have positive feelings and thoughts about my future through affiliate marketing, but since everbody around me say that I'm fool and crazy, my mother and father first, I have a great deal of negative driving force, and yes, from time to time I also have a bit of envy towards people who earn 5,6 or 7 figures...
I go through the whole range of feelings as well, even still, but I always take a step back and try to learn from the experience. Figure out what they are doing that I am not, figure out new or better ways to manage my online business, etc.
It pays to keep in mind that we are all pioneers in this digital age, even those starting now, as Internet Marketing is really only in it's second decade. Knowing anything at all about it puts you in the minority, and at a serious advantage!
I used to get some negative feedback, until my wife cashed the first check from Clickbank for about $300.

This is just the kind of inspirational story that the makes the holiday season a time to be thankful and truly filled with gratitude. All of us have the the opportunity to follow in your footprints (yes footprints, my shoe size is probably a little bigger than yours).
It's just a matter of doing it. For me that can be hardest part. Reading and studying all the masters in the field of IM (including yourself) mean nothing until I/We take action. It may sound trite, but Just Do It!

The two things that have been key in me reaching my goals: being both consistent and persistent. Waking up every day to work towards my goals, even if it's baby steps or mundane tasks.
It's easy to get caught up in the daily activities and lose sight of that big picture, and even get completely derailed from the path to your goals if you're not careful. It pays to have a strong vision for what you want, written goals and an action plan to achieve them, and a true burning desire for it.
Lynn I'm thinking we're so lucky to have an internet marketer like you who shares so much of her life and what it's really like to get what you want out of life.
I have people who believe I'm chasing a dream and that I should get a 'real' job and it does fuel my fire. However, reading real stories like yours give me the inspiration and BELIEF in myself to know this is what I really am meant to do.
Those comments can be tough to deal with - especially coming from people you care about or that are a primary part of your life. I've been through the same so I can relate.
Not everyone has the same dreams or goals, but the process of achieving them is the same. It's hard to express how incredibly happy and grateful I am for what I have accomplished in my life. I remember a time when it seemed so far out of reach, and maybe even impossible, yet I worked toward it anyway. The idea of staying where I was just wasn't an option...
prev year(2008) this time, means late December I didnt know about internet marketing, home based business, earning from website and the stuffs related to these.. can you belive.. and now I, myself cant belive it that whats the difference between 2 dates(12/22/08 and 12/22/09). Your story is totally inspiring.. if anyone find it discouraging I think its his/her faults.. my story is kinda like you but not same.. 🙂 but I am inspired in my own story.. Lolz. and so does your. One big difference is that you had a conversation with someone who show u the way and I just watched the boss of my current company and get inspired, I never had talk with him about this ;).

Great points, Sudeep. That reminds me of a biblical reference, a great story no matter your religion: The Parable of the Talents (you can read it online if you Google it).
That conversation with my boss was a short one, with no real instruction I could use. Just inspiration. I certainly didn't expect a wealthy man to sweep me off my feet and put me where I wanted to be (I was already married at the time - LOL). So for me it was going to be hard work rather than luck, and I believe I accepted that challenge well 😉
Yeah I also told about that inspiration, that ideas .. not any instructions.. and you were really smart enough to catch that.. and you became smart coz you wanted to be.. you wanted to reach a position where you would get a total financial freedom, you wanted to be self dependent, you wanted to change your life, you wanted something more better for your life. Thats why you caught the ideas, get inspired, took the challenge and here you are today... keep inspiring everyone.. 🙂

As we bring the first decade of the New Millennium to a close, deep reflection is in order. You are always spot-on with your posts. It's like you have some sort of psychic powers to know what we are thinking or have trouble with and you address it with the utmost clarity . . . perfect timing.
You pose the right questions or give the needed answers when WE need them. That's the sign of a true leader who has her finger on the pulse of her "tribe". Over the years, I have watched you grow and I have been privy to some personal trials in your life that have inspired me to keep it moving.
Lynn, I have always admired you and appreciated you for your generosity, your transparency, your integrity, and ALL you've done to ensure that we obtain the online marketing success we seek. This year, 2009, has been a wonderful year full of learning and growth, both personal and business-wise. No psychic powers here (lol), but perhaps we're all on the same page in some ways. I was actually feeling overwhelmed and a bit burnt out before my trip, and the time away did me a world of good - gave me a fresh perspective and renewed motivation.
There's nothing like being right in the heart of your achievement, enjoying the fruits of your labor, to uplift the spirit. I'm feeling incredibly inspired, and am taking this time to create some ambitious goals for the year ahead!

I have been inspired by several women: Connie Ragen Green, Kelly McCausey & you Lynn. I am a single mom too & have just barely ekked out a living at home these past several years.
I have to admit I was first in that club that thought there was some magic ingredient to success that the successful folks know about (and are keeping it to themselves!) I even mentioned it on your forum one time and was blasted by a few people.
It wasn't until this year that I realized what that secret ingredient is, although it's not secret & anyone can have it if they want it bad enough. It's tenacity, a drive to succeed, and not to give up no matter what! It's also a lot of hard work and a reason to keep at it when things are hard.
Once I actually decided that I was going to be one of the success stories and do what it takes to get there, I have been amazed at how things have been changing for me. It hasn't always been easy but it is working! I'm so amazed that it does actually work!

I always say that anyone in their right mind would have given up after not making any money their first year, but I was determined to build an online business. Great Holiday post Lynn as we look forward to the New Year with the warm feelings of Christmas filling our hearts.
For me creating my ideal lifestyle has been and continues to be an on-going process for both my mind set and building an on-line business. Building an on-line business has also involved a steep learning curve 😉
It has definitely involved really making the decision as to the life I want to lead and how I want to achieve it and then staying true to that vision. Even when the money is not flowing in. Even when my older brother says things like, “Well, it seems like you’re having fun. Maybe you can make a few bucks along the way.”
It has also included shutting out the voices of the naysayers and connecting with like minded and supportive people. I remember telling my friend Melissa what I was doing and while she didn’t quite understand it all, she was impressed by my conviction and self assuredness (that was an “aha” moment for me by the way).
What really propelled me forward was finding the 30 Day Challenge which led to the Immediate Edge that led me to knowing you and you now are a huge part of my on-going process for both my mind set and building an on-line business. Honestly, I am sure you can do this alone, but it makes it so much easier when you befriend people traveling on the same path. Even if their visions are different than yours, the camaraderie and support you give and get enriches everyone’s life.
Thank you seems so small in comparison to all that you give Lynn and to how much you have helped me on my path to achieving my dream life style…please know that it is heart felt and infinite. Big hug my friend!

One thing that really stands out to me is to reach my goals, I need to stay focused on what I want. Not what society says I should want.
Each of us has our own idea of the "ideal lifestyle" or "dream home". Not everyone wants to drive a Bentley or live in a fancy mansion. It's up to each person to decide what those things mean to them.
For me, the "ideal lifestyle" means I have Freedom and Opportunity. I am excited when I have freedom to choose, and opportunities to experience cool things.
This idea really helped me realize that I am living my dream every day! Thank you for the reminder, Lynn!

That's so true, Jen. I'm one of those people that do NOT want a mansion or a yacht, but rather prefer a stress-free FUN lifestyle that requires little management and offers tons of opportunity.
One of my highest priorities over the last decade has been to be a full time parent. Not an easy feat as a single mother but it has been incredibly rewarding. Now that my children are older, I am also in a position to give them valuable opportunities they would not have otherwise. A position in my successful business for them both has been a good start.

Great post Lynn. And it sounds like you had a great Xmas too. The point about it taking time to make things happen is a good one. Most people expect to wake up the next day successful and if they don't then they give up. Use others' succeses to inspire us and we will be successful as long as we put in the work and work in the right direction.
It'd be nice if it worked that way, wouldn't it? I'd go to sleep and wish myself in perfect physical shape - all skinny & buff LOL. Of course, where would be the gratitude or sense of accomplishment in that?? 😉

As I come out of a wonderful busy Christmas packing and arranging the delivery of Christmas gift boxes and am looking at all my Invoicing to be completed before the 31 December, I realise that life does have an amazing range of opportunities steering us in the face. I too have been reminded of that by two fantastic business customers prior to Christmas. My business is mostly online and with the past recession, I had started to doubt my opportunity and to really doubt myself. By taking the time to get to talk with my old and new customers, which is something that I really enjoy, I do believe it is making a real difference to my business. I like to find out how their lives have been both in business and in their personal lives, as having someone who is willing to listen and share can be great for them.

From personal experience, I can certainly say that those who love us the most in our offline lives are the most dangerous ones to listen to when you're starting off. My goodness how they try to protect you by telling all the reasons why it won't work.
Strange how things changed when..
I bought a vehicle without telling my hubby. When he came home and started to panic, I got to say "I paid cash, sweetie. Don't worry." lol!
OR when I told my hubby to quit his job and come work with me.
OR when I bought a ticket for a cruise and handed it to my mom.
OR... any number of other examples.
All of a sudden you get a lot more support. 😉

I am both inspired and envious (in a good way) of your lifestyle. You are so willing to help others achieve as much as you have, by teaching them how to get focused and take it from "Start to Profit".
Because of you and the elite group, I truly believe that I too can have that lifestyle. Before I found your forum I felt like I was wondering around in the dark, literally. You have shown me how to focus so I can achieve my dream lifestyle.
Because of some extended family medical difficulties, I have been unable to follow my goals timeline as closely as I had wanted to. But I have not given up and refuse to become discouraged. I have decided that this may be a race but it is a marathon not a sprint. When I finally achieve that lifestyle, I will be able to handle family problems and illnesses much easier and more in stride.
My husband feels like he knows you personally, because I'm always saying "Well Lynn says...."

I can relate to your feelings about the timeline though, as I feel that exact same way - even still. But when I look back and take notice of my progress, I have to let go of that negative nagging feeling. I think as humans we just want things faster (instant even) but it's that "slow and steady" that creates a successful long-term business model.
It's funny how we can be hard on ourselves for getting 3 things done in a day when we wanted to do 20. And feel discouraged, instead of pleased with the obvious progress we did make getting those 3 priority tasks completed... It's mostly mindset. Like I said - you're doing great!

You're such an inspiration Lynn! I too have a hard time seeing how my online ventures will reach the level that I would like, but now more than ever I feel like I'm prepared to make it happen in 2010.
I absolutely love Las Vegas; I caught a few shows, though not appropriate for teens 😉 maybe next time I'll see the Blue Man group. Hopefully you can add a trip to my hometown St. Thomas to your travel plans. Your teens will love the clear water and sandy beaches there among other things 🙂

Just had to add: I love the look on people's faces when I tell them I don't have any plans of looking for employment even when my youngest starts school. They look all shaken up, as if I've said something heretical or scandalous. Looove it!
It's funny lol - I still have people ask me "so, are you still doing that internet stuff?" with the raised eyebrows too of course (as if I'd be doing anything different after more than 10 years -ha!)
Again you are so inspiring. So many times have had people ask me how did you start doing that or I want to do what you do and make this much money.
They all want to make this much money and make it right now. Yes you have to jump in with both feet like you did but it does not happen over night. There are many hours (because I am still so new at this) that I am up late, and rise even earlier to get a few more things done. Why because I want to be in my perfect life in a few more years.
Think positive.....

I get that too, Tricia. A lot of people have said that they want to do what I do, and have the lifestyle that I have. But most of them are not willing to give up 10+ hours of TV every week, or invest the hours that I did getting where I am...
