Perceptions and Potshots: More IM Drama
I’ve said it over and over: the Internet Marketing niche is a volatile one. It’s not the ideal space to work within, unless you have a strong position and a thick skin.
I’m still working on the latter, but the former I have nailed. I have been in business for 13 years, successfully working from home and online, and earn a very nice living from the internet.
I have never made false claims, big promises, or even shared my own income details. If anything, I’m more of a realist and help people get grounded with strategies and models that work.
Still, I get my share of negative comments and unhealthy cynicism – from complete strangers, and on an almost daily basis. Some of this comes from past negative experience with other people or companies. Some of it stems from a general disdain for anyone experiencing success.
A friendly, honest response usually turns things around and so I do my best to respond and answer questions – no matter the tone.
But every now and then you’ll run across someone online who is just in an all out campaign against you. The more you try to resolve it, the more they attack you. These types enjoy stirring the pot and ruffling feathers, and are not worth the time and energy it takes to keep up or respond.
Until they cross the line. And libel is nothing to play with.
This week’s potshot comes from none other than Rick Butts. And if you recognize that name, your memory is correct: this is not the first pot he’s stirred with my name in it.
It started on a blog post by Ryan Healy titled Internet Marketing Life Support. It’s a good blog post. Ryan makes valid points about doing your research and knowing who you’re working with. I have no qualms with the post – in fact, I encourage you to read it.
And then scroll down and read the first of 100+ comments, by Rick Butts, where he says (and I quote):
They’ve also been helped along by 2nd tier gurus like Lynn Terry who so desperately want to be gurus and relentlessly continue to preach the guru gospel and faithfully haul their junk out to flea market at each launch. This group has done as much if not more (and there are a lot of them – see ‘em at every live event) to keep the momentum and false hope alive.
If you read the rest of Rick Butts’ comment you’ll get an even bigger picture of the negative image that he paints of the group he has made up in his head where he used me as the prime example.
I am sure there is no need to defend myself here or to you. And I won’t be leaving a comment on Ryan’s blog post. I have collected both screenshots and print versions and am sending those over to my lawyer this morning.
So with that behind us, I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts about hierarchy and perceptions in the IM space…
As humans, we tend to struggle to find our place in the world. We have this imaginary totem pole in our minds, and in order to find our place there we have to position everything around us on it first. She is above me, I am above him, we are equals, etc. In placing everyone else, you can easily place yourself.
Why this is necessary, I have no idea. I just know that I see it every single day. Unfortunately you are rarely ever comparing apples to apples, but rather using only what limited facts you have about someone to make a skewed judgment – which ultimately reflects on your judgment of yourself.
I have never called myself a 2nd Tier Guru. Or a guru even, for that matter. People who put titles on me do so only to define themselves.
Be cautious about making such judgments or conclusions about others. Or about having expectations from someone that are solely based on your perception of them. Make decisions based on facts. GET the facts if you don’t have them. Never assume.
This goes for products you might buy, coaches or mentors you hire, people you choose to respect and/or emulate. This goes for people you choose as accountability partners, peers for your personal mastermind group… or even friends.
Someone’s perception of me does not change the person I am. It only changes how they see me, or their expectations of me. And that can lead to unnecessary disappointment – for both parties.
It’s important to do your research, and work with facts. And to rely more on yourself, your common sense and your gut intuition, than to rely on anyone else for your success – or for your position on that silly, imaginary totem pole.
At the end of the day, no matter how high or low you’ve placed me, which is not going to be the same as everyone else, I am still the same person. I am your everyday 36 year old single mom. I work from home, I work hard, and make damn good money on the internet. I spend every day helping others do the same. Period.
Don’t let me, or anyone else, define you – or your goals. Success is unique to everyone, as is the road to get there. No product and no person is going to be the source of your success OR your failure. It’s on you and you alone. And mine is on me.
Ryan’s post does a good job of explaining why. It’s a reality check on where we place our focus. Are you busy following people and products, or are you busy following your own game plan?
As for the comments, I’d skip those. Read it, consider it, and then get back to work on your own online business. Don’t let the drama sidetrack you. I’m not.
Best,

Great post Lynn! Well put. As I was reading this, I looked back over my past views and how I probably have judged someone because of someone like this guy who has judged you. I really appreciated your insight and willingness to share this. You have a great attitude about it. I hope to learn from you on this. Thanks for sharing.

Extremely good post Lynn. It definitely gives us a wake up call on ourselves and how we live our lives. Thank you for your insight and honesty. No matter who we are and how we live our lives we all have a tendency to believe or not believe someone based on so many factors and at times we make mistakes, but that is being human. We all are responsible for ourselves and how we treat others and it is so easy to make judgements. It is sad that Rick Butt has done just that. But that is his belief and he is entitled to it. However, we must all make our own decisions. In every aspect of my contact with you and your group I have found you to be somone who has nothing to hide and “what you see is what you get”. Thank you.

He’s entitled to his belief, and I’m entitled to take legal action against defamatory and libelous statements. Thinking something, and making statements/accusations in public and in print are two different things.
Thank you for your kind words, Carol.

Thank you Ryan. Great post. It’s a shame it was twisted by the very first comment. You made some very valid points in what to take away from those facts.

Actually, it looks like Rick’s was the 6th comment that wasn’t a response to somebody else.
Disqus has multiple ways to sort comments: Popular now, Best rating, Oldest first, Newest first. So what appears at the top depends on how the comments are sorted. (Switching to Disqus has taken me some time to get used to.)
As far as drama goes, I think I created enough to last all year! I’m ready to just write about regular stuff for a while.

Lynn,
You have always been nothing but professional, honest and completely willing to take the extra step to help someone. I guess with your growing success you have to be thick skinned but it doesn’t make it any easier. I know you are a sensitive caring person and I hope you don’t spend a lot of time wasting your beautiful energy on negative people. You have so much more to contribute to this niche.

Hi Lynn — good for you! – I have heard that to keep going on the internet you need a “thick skin and an open heart” —
And many of us with the “open hearts” really have to work on the “thick skin” part – and at the same time don’t let misinformation and negativity run rampant.
You are so professional and genuine, Lynn.

People who say stuff like that really don’t know you. I’ve only known you since July, but I’d say Ed Dale and others are right to call you “The Ralph Nader of Internet Marketing,” or “The voice of integrity in Internet Marketing.” You are a real person who is accessible, realistic, and a great teacher. Anyone who has really hung around your site or have been a member of your Elite Forum would know that.

I struggled with Ryan’s post from the get go. From my perception – it was filled with generalizations and personal perceptions of people within an amazing segment of the internet world – Internet Marketing. But hey, to each his own.
When Rick Butts posted his comment and included you Lynn – I should have commented back. I feel bad that I didn’t and I apologize.
Sure would be nice if Butts could get his facts straight – sure would be nice.
I’ve learned community building through you Lynn – I’m thankful for the community here and at SSWT.

For the record, particularly for anyone that is new to SSWT or ClickNewz, of the 3 merchants listed in Ryan’s post which I linked to above in mine… I only ever promoted one.
That was StomperNet, and specifically their Net Effect magazine, which I am still subscribed to and still enjoy as much as the day I promoted it as an affiliate. I never recommended or promoted any other products from their line.
When that launch went south, I went out of my way for my fellow affiliates and for those that signed up on my recommendation. And when I had done all that I could, I stepped back and have not done a promotion since. All of that is public knowledge.
I am bound in what I can and cannot say by the Terms of Service, and also by a conversation that I had with Brad Fallon. And I stand by my word whether it’s spoken, written, or given with the click of a mouse.
I’ve been working online longer than anyone mentioned in that post, including Rick Butts. I have never wanted to be a guru. I don’t offer false hope. I don’t mention major IM launches here or on my mailing list – I should say *anymore*, the minute things went overboard in my personal opinion. And I make my money in a variety of niches, with a variety of models, including: online bingo, cat in the hat collectibles, european leather-bound bibles, dart boards, baby bedding – you name it. So I know what I’m talking about when I teach niche marketing.
I’m not going to waste any more energy on the topic of Rick Butts. He just wants to get a rise out of me. Fortunately one of the perks to my success is being able to afford a really good lawyer.
But I would love to hear your comments on the industry, it’s perceptions, how it affects you and your self-assessments, etc. And thank you to those of you that commented above – your kind words are very much appreciated!

Over the past six months, I’ve been getting submerged in internet marketing. I’ve consulted a lot of different sources, and tried different products and methods.
After everything I’ve tried, Clicknewz and the SSWT Elite Members Forum have been inarguably my most valuable resources. It’s the first time I’ve been on a solid path to profit.

Lynn, I’m one of your many subscribers and to be honest I haven’t taken ANY action on your suggestions or posts…but I’ve been totally impressed with the amount you’ve given away. That’s the reality of the web today…people want free stuff, THEN they’ll pay you for more. I know much of your email communication is automated and you’re unashamed of your use of affiliate links to make money BUT I also know that you wrote those emails at some point and that you studied those companies for which you’re an affiliate.
Every great person has enemies Lynn. From Jesus Christ Himself I have learned that to believe in something (or Someone) means others will oppose you. Let it serve as a reminder that you stand for something and when you stand for something you become an easier target then those who aren’t willing to stand at all. Keep up the good work and thanks for the content. I’ll get around to implementation one of these days

Oh gosh Lynn, this totally sucks but I’m really proud of the way that you’re handling this situation with such class and professionalism. In my niche, we’re often faced with harsh criticism too so I know what you mean.
The IM business has such a bad reputation which is an unfortunate thing, and the truth of the matter is many people are dishing out false hopes left and right. I do have to say that no one is forcing us to buy-in to what “gurus” have to offer. This is a great reminder to us all, that our success lies in our own abilities (and blessings from the heavenly Father above), not in someone else. I’ve unsubscribed to a LOT of the “gurus” out there and suffice it to say that you’re still on my A-list
Follow me @Kimmoy on Twitter.
Rick Butts is just jealous maybe. I don’t think any information marketers make long term success in the business by giving faulty info, so only the truth will survive.
Follow me @imbenjanke on Twitter.
He’s still at this crap? Sometimes I have to wonder … would his business exist without the drama? I mean talk about out of the blue slamming for no good reason. Why choose you to target? He doesn’t single out anyone else but you? (Yeah, like I really needed to point that out … this just ticks me off!)
I’d love to hear what your lawyer has to say about this.
Since you’re still working on the latter … why don’t you let us … us being your loyal readers (aka your friends) be your thick skin for you. But I wouldn’t worry about that too much. After reading this post, it sounds like your skin is about as thick as your position is strong. Good for you! It’s not worth it!
It doesn’t matter what people like Rick think of you. The people that matter are those who care about you the most. Those who are here frustrated to the hilt right now cause someone might have hurt a dear friend of ours
I do have to go against what you’ve said though … just a bit.
I personally do put you high on a totem pole.
Why?
Because you’re not “just another guru”. You are a real person with real feelings who I truly I believe I could trust with my own child. (Gosh, this takes me back! How long have I known you now? lol!)
But seriously, you genuinely care about the people you help. I’ve never once felt you tugging at my wallet. It’s not about the money for you. As a matter of fact, I think you give away more than what you sell! Which in my own personal opinion is why most of us have no problem pulling out the wallet if and when you do decide to actually charge for some of the help you give!
You’re up on that totem pole because I started with you. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it hadn’t been for you introducing me to affiliate marketing, showing me the ropes, helping me understand it and cheering me on every step of the way.
And that’s JUST affiliate marketing! This reply is getting long enough as it is … I can’t possibly list everything else I’ve learned from you on just about every aspect of internet marketing there is. I’ve always followed you because you’ve never steered me wrong and have always had the answer.
So you’re up on that totem pole because you’re more like my “goal”. You’re up there where I want to be some day. Not just because you’re any better than me but because you’re living, breathing proof that someone can start with basically nothing and work hard to reach the level of success you are happy with.
You’re not someone who appeared all of the sudden out of nowhere with this “awesome product that’ll turn me into the next millionaire”. Who if it hadn’t been for your best buddy “guru jack” who everyone does know put a testimonial on your sales page.
You’re someone who has been working hard at this for many years, has proven you know what you’re talking about and has proof that you actually use what you teach every single day. You’re someone who is big-hearted enough to teach anyone else willing to read and work hard how to do it just like you.
That’s why you’re way high on my totem pole. Not because I’m judging you but because I want to be like you. (Ooh yeah, I wanna be just like you! lol!)
From the very first time I’ve met you, you’ve always provided your readers with quality “stuff” with a heavy dose of integrity. But most importantly, it’s been truthful “stuff”.
It’s a real shame that when it comes to people like Rick, their businesses survive because of drama. (And if there isn’t any around for them to jump in on … they just create themselves!) I don’t believe in there being no such thing as bad publicity … there IS a difference. Bad publicity to me is not very respectable in any way, shape or form.
Alrighty, I could go on and on and on here but I do believe I’ve done enough now, lol. Let’s just say I agree with pretty much everything else said and be done with that part.
Lynn, you just keep on doing what you’re doing and don’t ever change!

Great response, Lynn! While I’m sure Mr. Butts’ comments can accurately be applied to a legion of Internet marketers, you are obviously not one of them. It’s scary that someone can start throwing accusations around without a shred of evidence and tarnish someone else’s reputation unfairly.
Some people are so bitter that they can’t believe there are actually honest, ethical, generous people who like to help others. Making money by teaching Internet marketing to others does not automatically make one a part of the greedy guru group. (the GGG, as I like to call them. Not really, I just made that up.)
I’m putting my keywords with my name in this post proudly and without hesitation. I know I’m not in the “GGG” and that’s all that matters. You are clearly of a similar opinion. Go, girl!

I really blinked when I saw Rick Butt’s total attack on you out of nowhere, Lynn.. but I didn’t leave a comment: I don’t intend to hook into inflammatory drama. To be blunt, it’s not worth the space, it’s not worth my time, and it’s not worth taking seriously.
But I just want to say, good for you, for contacting your lawyer. That’s really the only appropriate way to stop that sort of nastiness.
I really admire the way you do business, your practical professionalism, your transparency with those you interact with, and your strong principles and ethics. Your grandmother would be so proud of you.

Ditto to everything else said here in support of you, Lynn.
As for perceptions in Internet Marketing, I believe certain people have a mindset that causes them to be overly judgmental and critical of anyone with a blog or a public profile. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true.
Each and every one of us reading this now is unique in our approach to this business. We have a unique set of circumstances and can connect with different kids of people. We all have something we can contribute, teach, or share to help others along the journey to earn a living online.
Being critical, insulting, or libelous doesn’t help anyone achieve anything. It only distracts us from our objective.
If everyone spent a bit more time focusing on what THEY are contributing to the community, and less time complaining about things, we’d all be better off.
Thank you for your incredible contribution, Lynn. I appreciate it.

It reminds me of an old saying Lynn, when we call out someone on their (so-called) faults, you are basically holding a mirror up to yourself. Frankly, if you are second-tier, I’d rather be with you, because if Rick Butts is the first-tier, it’s a sorry state of affairs.

As should be expected, enough people have stepped forward on both blogs to defend the ridiculous attack on Lynn, as she well deserves. I feel that this brings up another issue, however…
Whether they are televangelists, internet marketers, Amway uplines, or anyone else promising the “good life,” the ultimate responsibility lies with the INDIVIDUAL. If anything seems too good to be true, it most likely is. What people are constantly plunking their credit cards down for is HOPE. If you rely more on hope and pretty words than you do on your own best judgment and persistence, you are fair pickins for any carnie out there.
What I would like to see, rather than the feds trying to protect people from making their own stupid decisions, is people with charts, spreadsheets, diagrams, etc. saying “I followed this (guru)’s program to the letter – I took action every day doing X, Y, and Z and I did not make back my investment in their program.”
How many people can say THAT? Hope doesn’t come in a box. Nor does experience. Information and tools DO.

I have seen drama from afar in the IM niche and YES! nelly it can get ugly. But why? Everyone is simply trying to take care of their family and themselves. Most of us are trying to run a business, and keep income flowing, not jab at others.
I think handling oneself professionally attracts the same. I know (well I don’t know them personally) but have witnessed very talented very skilled IM people in very unprofessional lighting. And it completely turns me off, as I feel that’s not someone I care to hang with, etc. No matter how much they make or success they have garnered. IMHO professionalism counts always.
Maybe I’m naive, but excessive cursing and name calling and whatnot is a total turnoff. In any niche, IM included. But I hear you on the thick skin part.
I’m not even going to bother to read the comments from Mr. Butts, as i’ve seen enough above from your article. But good on you for handling it as best you can.

[...] who obviously had some sort of agenda, defamed her by name in his comment. I want you to go over to Lynn’s blog post about this situation, read her response, and then read the comments that follow. That, my friends, [...]
You asked: “Are you busy following people and products, or are you busy following your own game plan?” This is a great question that everyone should be asking themselves.
For myself, I’m honestly too busy following my own game plan to pay much attention to what anyone else is doing online. I do my own thing, in my own way. So it really surprises me when someone points something that I’ve done out, and twists it around in a way that makes it seem like I’m out to get them. And being on the receiving end of something like this, leaves me feeling completely clueless about what they think I’ve actually done. I mean do they really think I spend my time thinking about them, and watching what they do, and then go and do something I know will “stick it to them”?
Ugh! Sorry for the rant, it’s just frustrating, and sad even, to see people who are so cut-throat when it comes to business. I mean, wow, some people take it to the extreme and lash out without even really knowing what they’re talking about.

“Our friend Mark Hendricks says there are three levels of business people:
A – more advanced
B – looking to improve
C – coming up
And we’re all “B”. There’s always someone above you and always someone with less experience.”
Amen. Brilliant.

And I love this part! Great quote.

Should anyone still have even the faintest doubt, Lynn Terry is a warm, considerate, loyal, approachable and honorable lady.
Additionally, she is a capable, knowledgeable, highly successful, extremely ethical marketer.
She don’t put on no airs! (That’s a Southern compliment for you non-Southern folks.)
Elmer
Ps. She is also photogenic.

The words are INTEGRITY and CLASS. You have them both in abundance, Lynn! You have defined yourself to me by exhibiting them on the brainstorming sessions and in the forums. You have handled this very well in my opinion. It has only increased my appreciation for you and what you do for us all

Ahoy Lynn,
I just read Ryan Healy’s article (the one mentioned) and of course, Rick’s comment. I jumped over here to read your statement.
Lynn, you have stated your position well…

Oh Lynn…I guess this is one of the down sides of becoming famous!
Does anyone remember the stir Mr. Butts caused at the beginning of last year’s 30DC when he rudely attacked Ed Dale and the 30DC saying that the most wonderful Ed Shaz was a creation of Ed Dale’s? He went on a similar rant then – I guess he enjoys such things.
You are a friend and a mentor to me and to hundreds of other people. Your pure vision and willingness to share your knowledge to help people is an amazing gift to all of us.
If called upon I would stand up and defend you to the nth degree. But you know, anyone who really truly knows you knows that that isn’t necessary.
Sad that someone feels the need to attack and put down someone to get attention for themselves. More to be pitted than feared.
It is what it is and the truth will rise to the top and what you have stated is the truth Lynn!

I enjoyed both this post and Ryan’s post you referred to. I’m not gonna comment on the drama or the comment you mentioned so much, but I wanted to say thank you for keeping it real and, well, being Lynn
Your blog has become of my favorites (because of a) I like your style and personality and b) the high quality of info you share). Hugs and all the best.
