How Do You Prevent Digital Product Theft?
The question comes up a lot among info-product publishers. They are looking for ways to secure their download files, and prevent digital product theft.
If you create and sell info products online, you’re probably looking for ways to secure your products and download links as well (if you aren’t already).
Last week I asked my friends on Twitter what they use to secure their digital downloads, and I got several great recommendations…
- www.easyclickguard.com
- Download Accelerator Plus (DAP)
Comments:
@RockYourDay I prefer e-junkie over Payloadz. Wasn’t thrilled with Payloadz’ pricing structure at all when I looked at it a while back
@Josh_Spaulding DLGuard is high quality. Sam is a top-notch guy and provides excellent customer service too.
@EugeneWare don’t bother. What u win with protected downloads you lose with added customer support issues. Keep it simple.
What do you use to prevent digital product theft?
Best,

p.s. If you’re not yet selling your own info products online, you’ll want to visit this post next: Create Your Own Info-Products.
Tip: The easiest type of product to create is short reports.

I’ve used LinkLok for many years for my clients to secure their digital downloads. Works very well and they have a few versions, depending on what checkout system you’re using.

This is a great topic and fortunately there are a lot of options out there! I didn’t really consider this when I put up my first info product, because I generally like to think that people are good and honest most of the time. It seems I was only partially right LOL

I use WishList Member to secure my content. I have a WordPress video training course that I keep behind a secure member’s area. It seems to be working out great so far. I also like the fact that you can have different member levels. This way I can sell different crash courses all on the same membership site.

All the best,

I use Wishlist Member even though my products are only one-time billing, and 1ShoppingCart to handle payments…though were I to do it again, I might use e-junkie. e-junkie is far simpler and cheaper than 1SC. Plus, 1SC still charges me the same amount, but recently stopped allowing me to call them on the phone. This is a real downer.

Great post Lynn,
I really need to start my own product I have a load of knowledge on different subjects in the IM industry and it is growing all the time.
I am going now to check out your link “Create Your Own Info Product” and start some writing tonight
Thanks

Hi Lynn-
I agree with Eugene, I don’t even bother!
Sure, it sucks when someone steals your stuff, but my downloads are free for the people on my mailing list anyway. Also, my downloads contain my affiliate links in them, so have at it. Steal a few for your buddies while you are at it, ha ha ha!
The links that I make my money on are my affiliate links, not my downloads. So, I don’t even worry about it!
Theft of digital information is a big deal though! I don’t see it as any more excusable than the theft of anything else. People should be charged appropriately!
But, how do you catch the thieves?
Good luck!

I use e-junkie. It’s inexpensive and pretty easy to use. They have a PDF stamping feature which is an extra layer of protection, so to speak.

I’ve used e-junkie in the past. Their simplicity, ease of use for me, but mostly for the customer, was great.
I would use them again.

For those products that I do sell, I use RAP (Rapid Action Profits). It ONLY works with PayPal, tho.
DLguard by Sam Stephens is HIGHLY regarded and I would have gone with it (DLguard) originally but I got in on the launch price of the newly released RAP a few years ago so stayed with RAP. Happy with it.
IF I should decide not to use PayPal anymore, then I’d so with DLguard.

Hi Lynn,
I was going to be looking to secure my products and download links very soon so finding this post is just perfect for me. Thank you for writing it.
The recommendations are great but I’ll need to still choose which one will work the best for me.
It would be good if you could follow up on this and go into more depth as to advantages, disadvantages and prices for each.
I’ll hope that it will happen and will be checking your blog for that.

I rate DLGuard – WishList Member is also a great tool and the best plugin of its type

It’s interesting about copy rights, we all want to protect our work. Yet some bands have started to create a system of open downloading of the mp3, and then contributing what the users of the product feel it’s worth. Many did better then when they had copy protection installed, but I understand people do abuse these things too.
Another question is once someone reads your materials legitimately what prevents them from just reproducing it in a slightly different form.

I created http://uploadnsell.com for this for the newbies (or veterans too). You simply upload your files and then you’ll receive a link, which you can use to sell. It works with Paypal. No fees, no registrations is needed.
Give it a try.

I don’t use anything and I’m an idiot! lol I’m like Loretta, I guess until tonight, when you just trust people. I know it’s been happening and I feel sometimes if people want it badly enough they can have it. They will just get interested and buy my other videos that are physical products. Who knows, it might help to have some free products of your shipped all over, that is, if you have other “physical” products to sell.

What a great topic. I’ve bookmarked this article for future reference as I will be looking for a secure way of selling digital products in the near future for myself and some of my clients.
