Working at Home with a Baby…

October 2nd, 2006 · 6 Comments ·

He’s adorable, but not mine ;)
Actually, I’m babysitting today for a close friend of mine — and I’m getting a refresher course in what it’s like to work from home with a little one again! My own children are 10 and 15 years old now, so it’s been awhile since I’ve had a baby in my lap while I type…

It being Monday, the beginning of the month and ‘deadline day’ for the big $1k contest with PayPerPost… it’s been a little bit of a juggle. Fortunately he’s a wonderful baby, and his little schedule is jiving quite well with mine.

Baby took a nice long nap this morning, which is when I finished up most of my priority work. Then he listened in to a podcast with me. Afterwards he took a bottle laying in the crook of my arm while I typed up blog posts with my one free hand.

We’ve surfed TechCrunch, edited a few images in PhotoShop, made out bank deposits, browsed the feed reader and looked at stats. He seems to be taking an interest in the internet already! Or, um, at least the cordless phone and headset and keyboard :D

Poor thing - he’ll probably be totally geeked by the time his mom gets back!

My kids must all be super geeked. I have a 9 yr old, 7 yr old, 4 yr old, 2 yr old and 1yr old … and I can remember them all having their “mummy’s hug one hand and type one hand” sessions ;-)

Whew! Let’s see, I guess Zack was 5yo when I started working from home and then started Kindergarten when he was 6… so I only went through the ‘baby phase’ (while wah) with the one - my daughter.

Of course, both of my kids turned out just fine (or at least they have so far!) :D

He’s not a geek yet… my son started playing with Google Earth at 15 months, and my daughter addressed her first email at around the same age, I think. Maybe younger. Funny thing was that she had to first pull up IE, then Outlook, then get the email to open and add an address… all from random pounding on the keyboard.

Keep doing that to him and he might reach some serious geekdom.

Heh, that’s funny, Stephanie. And what a cute baby. My 1 year old loves to bang on the computer. She just last night opened notepad and banged out a few lines. :) It’s also amazing what randoming banging will turn on or do in Windows.
