McWi-Fi and the Mobile Office

This will not be news to those of you in the city… but in my little middle-of-nowhere town here in the beautiful Cumberland Valley of Tennessee, I was pretty impressed to see that our McDonald’s finally got Wi-Fi access!

If my children were younger, I could see making great use of this by getting some work done on the laptop while they were playing at the ‘playplace’. A change of scenery is always nice, especially if you have younger kids at home. I used to work from the swimming pool, the park… you name it!

Of course, these days I’m more likely to head up to the local coffee shop that offers Wi-Fi access to eat lunch while I work – or just get out of the home office for awhile. We dont have a Starbucks for at least 40 miles, but the local spot offers gourmet coffee and light lunches… and in the evenings they have live bands.

So for all those people that tell you that “you really should get out of the house more!”… (because you work from home and practically live online) make a list of local ‘hot spots’ that offer Wi-Fi and post it near your monitor ;-) :D .

I’ve included more links of interest on “McWi-Fi” below, but my absolute favorite was this snippet from McDonalds Wi-Fi overcooked?:

MCDONALD’S FOR WIFI access. Five quick things wrong with this picture -

  • Grease on your keyboard and case of the $2000+ Centrino
  • How can you play with the Happy Meal toy and your computer?
  • Do you really want to spend more than 5 minutes in a McD’s?
  • Do you really want to spend more than 2 minutes in a McD’s drive-through?
  • Too much noise, between whiny kids, short-order shouting, and that beeper for the “french” fries machine…

LOL

    Hi Lynn,

I’ve been trying to “get out more” while I work lately as well. I recently learned that Caribous Coffee is offering free wi-fi when you spend at least $1.50 per hour on beverages or food and Panera also offers free wi-fi with no additional purchase required.

Even though I like Starbucks, they charge for wi-fi so I make a point of frequenting places that offer it for free and letting the staff know how much of an impact it made on my decision to go to their restaurant or coffee shop. Hopefully, many other local stores and national chains will follow suit! Even though I have wi-fi and high-speed at home, I love getting out into the world while I work!

It’s unlikely the WiFi will be free…think you gotta buy something before you can have access to the WIFI and I don’t know for how long. But if anyone knows then do share. It would be great if we could just buy a cuppa coffee at a McCafe and just sit there all day while surfing around (in case you don’t actually work on your laptop and need absolute silence).

Our McDonald’s doesn’t have wi-fi. I was there this morning, but while my son played I got a lot of work done without being distracted by the net.

But I do hope McD’s Wi-Fi is coming to Canada soon!

  4. I don’t see who would actually enjoy spending more than 5 minutes at McDonald’s, coming out smelling like fries and burgers… one more thing, if their WiFi service is as fast as their drive-in, you’ll probably end up getting all pissed off, and going to a decent WiFi pub.
