While I've been accused of all three, I don't personally consider myself a Coach, a Mentor or a Guru.
But I can be a serious asset to your online business.
As you know, I just celebrated 15 years in business. From the very beginning, I have been helping others start and grow successful businesses as well. For almost a decade of that time I have been running an active discussion forum online where I answer questions, share resources, and brainstorm ideas.
I also share tips, resources and detailed tutorials for free here on my blog. Why do I do this? It's a labor of love, and a way to pay it forward. I had a very hard time starting out myself - and I'll go into more detail about that in a future post.
For now, I'd like to focus on you. How many hours a day are you working on your online business? Are you earning as much as you could should be? ...
It's Time For a Serious Evaluation
We're almost halfway through the year. If you're not absolutely thrilled with how your business is doing right now, now is a good time to stop, step back from it all, and do a serious evaluation.
Here are just some of the questions you should be asking yourself:
- How many hours are you working?
- What do you spend the majority of your time doing?
- Which business tasks do you most enjoy doing?
- Which business tasks do you least enjoy?
- How much money are you spending?
- Are those investments paying off?
- Is your blog/website running at maximum profit potential?
- What are the primary sources of the revenue you're earning?
- How can you increase/improve what's already working?
- Are you struggling to reach your market?
- Does your site convert as well as it should?
- How can you reach more people, and improve conversion rates?
- Are you inspired & motivated, or ready to throw in the towel?
These questions should prove as a great starting point to get you brainstorming and evaluating the current status of your business, and where you can make improvements that will help you earn more - in less time.

No matter what your answers are to the questions above, or where you are with your online business right now, you could be doing MUCH better.
Whether you're just starting out and getting things set up, or you're looking to grow/expand and increase your revenue while decreasing the hours you spend working online, there's always room for improvement.

Hi Lynn! I would love to see you do private coaching! I have always wanted to bounce ideas off you and brainstorm with you, but, like you, there are some websites or niches that I don't want everyone to know about. Sometimes I have an idea for a website or product and I need to keep it a secret from everyone.
Have you ever thought about offering this private mentor group through Skype or just plain old email? Then it's all private and you can talk back and forth without worrying that someone is going to take your idea and run. I have seen it happen so much with the online world, and I actually had two ideas that I told someone about and they took it and started it.
You could also have a form or something your private members fill out about them and their business idea and that gives them a head start, kind of a check list of things you need to know. Then create a checklist of things to go over with each client. That way it could be kind of streamlined in a way and give you time to think about what would be best for that particular person and their business ideas etc.

Please forgive my formality; I don't know you well enough to be too informal. Your video impressed me more than any other marketing piece ever could.
I really would like to join your group because I took you at your word. and what I believe was a sincere, honest presentation. I have been looking for someone who speaks earnestly and hopefully honestly to a true neophyte when it comes to wanting to start a reasonably profitable Internet business. I do like to write and I believe a "blog" is probably a better opportunity for me to be reasonably successful. The problem I'm having is: where do I begin? Perhaps joining your group to learn the basics, launch a blog that would be interesting to potential readers, and of course, bring in some supplemental income would be a real blessing.
I am a retired person living on a fixed income with a quest to engage the Internet as an opportunity to enhance the lives of others much more than I currently am able to do. Although I have ventured into Internet marketing, my effort(s) have yielded zero. I'm currently of the mindset to wipe the slate clean and learn from one who has "been there and accomplished that" (as you have after 16 years is it?).
Please forgive me if I have been to verbose; my level of frustration is significant. I won't go into a lot of the "bloody details" other than to say I had my share of being "scammed". I am therefore cautiously optimistic about ...

I was like you very unsure about buying or paying for programs and not getting the help that I needed. I have boughten into other programs, which I have not gotten the one-on-one like I do with Lynn. I have now started taking my business to the next level and have gotten the one-on-one help that I needed to know how-to and the help that I needed to understand the how-to. Lynn has been there for me for the past two moths and so has the Elite members of the group.

I can attest to the fact that Lynn knows what she's talking about. I think there is a lack of clarity about the difference between a coach, a mentor and a consultant. Some people blend them, but what I was taught in coaching school is that a coach is different than a consultant in that a coach isn't teaching you or mentoring you through sharing what they already know related to your business. That is what a mentor does - or a consultant.
It gets murky when you blend those two things, coaching and consulting. However, there are great things about blending them.
Great points, Jenn! I think the terms are intermixed a lot in our industry, and there's some confusion about what to expect. I much prefer leading a mastermind group and active community that works together for the greater good of everyone involved. It's been working out GREAT for almost 7 years now! 😀

Hi Lynn - What days/ times is the Mastermind/ brainstorming group offered? I'm committed to a temp full-time job (days, M-F thru 5/17) - if I go ahead & join today, will I be missing out on anything? I can do nights after 5 pm but no weekdays til this temp test scoring project ends.
The other issue is that I have a moderate hearing loss which means it's a bit hard to understand TV, videos and and similar media if not closed-captioned. Email or some other print format would be ideal for me because no sound is involved but I understand that I'm likely in the minority here.
Anyway, right now the issue is the temp job schedule; once that's done my time will be more my own. I've started 'monetizing' my blog but need help with SEO and related 'technical difficulties.'

I occasionally enjoy your articles, but I know from experience that I'm MUCH more likely to take advantage of advice and training if it is a structured group that meets by phone (especially one I pay for!)

I have to say I am just blown away here. "Elite Membership" could very well be the best money you ever spend (even at the new price) in your online marketing education.
I've spent over a year now trying this, trying that, joining this/that, trying to follow people who turn out to be just full of "fluff" to the point it has made me leery of everyone asking for money for a teaching product or a membership. Being skeptical now has certainly saved me a lot of money, I'm sure, but could have deprived me of something I couldn't even put a pricetag on that I have been desperately looking for... that is the information inside the membership area on Lynn's site. I'm so glad I took the plunge!
I only joined yesterday, and already have my money's worth just in listening to a couple of the archived mastermind sessions. Lynn doesn't hold back. She shares everything! Hello Lynn. My goal is not primarily to be an affiliate marketer. My goal is to create an online tutoring business. The greatest challenges will be the following: how to acquire a client base (market to them, attract them) and how to handle certain "hassles" (no-shows, short-notice cancellations, etc).

I joined the private Mastermind group last spring, then I had to leave when my hours were cut. My online business wasn't yet established. I still can't rejoin -- tough finding decent work in your 50s -- but I will say with total confidence that Lynn's services are the real deal and I will rejoin just as soon as I can.
Speaking of jobs and the future thereof, I honestly feel that working on your own will be the standard way of living within the next decade. I really do not feel that traditional jobs will ever come back the way they were before, especially for older people. So for us, online is the only future left. So anyone considering starting an online business would be wise to get started now.

I have been trying Internet Marketing since late 2007 and was going quite well until the last Google Penguin; that's when Google wiped my site off page 1 of the search engines and my earnings - and interest - have plummeted since. I just got tired of putting so much effort into something and then within a day it was literally all taken away, and I just could not muster the enthusiasm any more to keep going since. I do the website, social media and PR for a chef who has a restaurant, a product line and a soon to be published cookbook. I need help with SEO, keywords and marketing the ecommerce site for the products. I have some, but am confused about using them. The restaurant and products are gourmet, high end and expensive. So the usual discounts, give aways etc. don't work for our concept. Locally the products are in Whole Foods and specialty food stores. I think there is an online market for this, but can't quite figure it out. Would this be the right place for me to learn how to get the right SEO in code and copy on the page? We are not an affilitate marketer, but the producer. I have tried to find resources that specialize in the food field, but haven't found one that seems to be a good fit. Do you think your program is the right place for me or if not what would you recommend?

I left the Mastermind Group in December '12 because of day-job issues. Now that's changed for the better! I'll be back just as soon as I have my new laptop.
Anyone working online have issues with Windows 8? This laptop is brand new but has to go back. The tech people in my new job told me Windows 8 is incompatible with their software. (I have the option of working at home some days.)
I can imagine someone working totally on their own also having problems with the new operating system. Many of us providing services online work on documents clients send us. Anyone have a brand-new computer?
Also, I'm in agreement with Kristina: I too hesitate to tell a group about a niche idea as I'm afraid it'll be stolen. Ideas aren't copyrighted so that's a valid concern. Many times people want private masterminding to go over ideas they're not ready to share yet. Lynn, do you have any ideas as to what we can do to prevent stealing in the Mastermind Group?
Other than that, I'll say it again: for anyone who's on the fence about joining the Mastermind Group, compared to so many others who offer what they say are similar services that end up being little more than fluff, and charge in the thousands ... Lynn is the real deal! She's been at it for a long time, she knows her stuff, and most importantly, she does it in a way others don't.
She operates in the real world. Many of the others seem not to. How many times have you heard a marketer justify their prices by saying people won't "value" their training unless the cost is very high? That scientific correlation actually does operate under some very specific conditions; in most others, regardless of what they say, it simply does not apply.
People are thinking differently today. I value Lynn's products and services, both free and paid, that much more because of her affordable prices. I'm already a customer and am about to be one again. So I'm solidly in her market. Plus, the people here live in the real world. Most of us don't have thousands to spend. We want it. That's what so many of us are working towards. Many of us are just getting started; others are moving along but not where they want to be. It's ok to admit it: it's not in most bank accounts just yet!
Online work is the future. For many of us, it wasn't just our choice, it was thrust upon us.
I'm not just excited about my new online business. I really do love working online. But I also have to.
I'm in my late 50s. For us the good jobs are never coming back. Many aren't coming back for anyone. If you need a job, you toil in a warehouse, cashier in retail, serve at Mcdonald's -- if you can get hired.
Sometimes, like me, you may get the occasional contract gig that ups it a bit, makes life better. For a while. This new stint (SEO writer, and I love it!) is temporary til summer. It may possibly be seasonal, but no promises. No benefits. Constant need to keep up with the group, quotas ... the knowledge that this will end and, if my business doesn't take off, I'll have to return to the factory that is itself cutting back.
How many of you want that as your future? If you're older, this is the future. That should be enough to get most going.
It's not just me. Tough times for many. I'm one of the lucky ones. If I can last out the next couple of months and get this business self-supporting before they furlough me, I'll never have to go back to that hell again.
How motivating is that?
I'm ready to do whatever it takes. Sounds like the rest of you are, too! So Lynn, you really are doing a vital service, for those of us who both love it and need it.

As for idea theft, it does happen sometimes. I've seen it more publicly than within a private group like ours, as everyone in the group already has a business they are working on diligently. That said, people who steal ideas... are not the types that generally become competition, lol.

You are a serious encouragement to me an I want to personally thank you. On the other hand I love our post about being serious. The truth is after reading his post I jump to other post a hot topics and just filled me with joy. I am a member to your forum and I am kinda interested in creating one my own some day. One thing I loved to do is mentor people outside the online gated communities. There are hundreds and thousands of people who struggle with different topics and I do my best to help them every step of the way. Some people are successful and others seem to not get out of that stubborn root. The truth is being serious in a business adventure is only the beginning. The other part is just sticking through with it. The other reason I like to mentor is to "pay it forward" helping people change their lives and seeing the change is priceless. Over all I love reading your topics and use them to help me motivate myself and keep going without giving up!

Do you help on driving targeted traffic to any website? I own and operate a video services business in the Tampa, FL area and I want more potential customers to see my website and call. I used to enjoy pretty good rankings for all my keywords but it has not been that way for quite some time.
Of course, I've always wanted to start a traditional online business that provides passive income like a Blog. I will read more about it in your articles.

I always feel that nothing is a coincidence that we are always where we should be at that time. I'm completing my last business class to receiving my bachelor,s degree and my teacher sends me a post that leads me to your site. I have tried many times to start an online business and have spent lots of money with no results. After reading several of your posts and reply's I want to believe that this time it will happen.
