Multiple Streams of Income
posted on December 11th, 2006
John Reese recently released a 2-part video series about managing an Online Business that has created quite a buzz… and even a bit of controversy. The first video discusses Multiple Streams of Income, and how being too widely diversified equals being entirely too distracted. John encourages viewers to FOCUS, and explains why you should put all of your energy into ONE primary business or venture.

The majority of the viewers expressed appreciation for John’s views in this video, and left hundreds of positive comments on his blog. Many of them mentioned that they were struggling with the diversification/distraction issues personally, and were planning to make some serious changes following this advice.
Others brought up points about whether John was contradicting himself, whether it was really ’safe’ to put all of your eggs in one basket, and what this meant about the ‘Underachiever model’ that has such a huge following…
For example, one of the comments on John’s blog reads:
I also thought what you said was a major contradiction of yourself - although i agree with you. You’re one of the richest, most successful guys i know - and you did it with MSOI. You’re in the internet marketing niche, the ebay niche, i’ve heard you say you have several “other†businesses, you just released a video showing earnings of $500,000+ in Adsense - i assume with sites in heaps of different niches… and you don’t seem to be doing so bad from it!
One of your best friends - Frank Kern - who you say is a genius… makes millions of dollars creating ebooks for hundreds of different “niche†markets. He is bloody successful at it. He’s a millionaire from that, and a multi millionaire from his undies courses. He would never have been able to release undies if it wasnt for his MSOI. So everything he teaches is wrong now? Frank Kern is basically a quack telling us to use MSOI… great i wish i knew before forking out $1000 for his course.
I agree focusing on one thing is the goal to success. But i just felt like you were contradicting yourself. But hey, i’ll take your advice for the next 6 months and see how i go — that is if Frank doesn’t get me excited with another undies launch.
If you’ve followed John Reese for very long, you probably already know that he is more of an ‘Overachiever’. He even mentions in the second video (link below) that many of the more successful ‘Undies’ identify profitable markets through this model and flesh out their websites and marketing campaigns accordingly.
The advice that John offered was simple: FOCUS. He suggested that you choose a niche or a business model, put all of your energy into that one project, and spend at least 6 months on it before allowing yourself to judge it or become distracted.
View Video 2 -> A Focused FLOOD Of Income
In this follow-up video he addresses some of the issues that were brought up by those that questioned the original video, and went on to explain his thoughts on the difference between dabbling online and building an online business.
I particularly liked the fact that he cleared up the difference between Multiple Streams of Income… and Multiple Streams of Revenue. This was an important point to make, and one that will remind you to “go deep” instead of “go wide”.
I found the videos to be both motivating and thought-provoking. John Reese offers sound advice and asks serious questions that will have you analyzing your business model and finding solutions to any negatives you are currently experiencing.
If you havent yet had an opportunity to view them, take a moment to at least listen to the audio while you are working.

[...] No, I haven’t watched the videos. I’ve thought about the topic often enough on my own and understand the issue pretty well, I think. If you want to learn more about the videos, go on over to Lynn Terry’s blog, as she covers it pretty well I think. [...]
I don’t see a problem in diversifying - after you have mastered your first website. Once you have focused your energies on one web site, got it established - then spread your empire. Keep your blinders on, do not allow yourself to get distracted every time a new product comes out. Keep a swipe file of all those emails and sales letters that entice you, but keep your money in your pocket! The next venture you start on will be less time consuming and easier to master because you have polished your skills.
