Holidays in a Home Office

It’s the last day of the school break for the holidays, and the kids will return to their schedule in the morning. As much as I have enjoyed the last few weeks… I must admit that I am looking forward to getting back to work full time and getting back on my own schedule.

Over the holiday break there was a lot of shopping, eating out, houseguests and sleepovers. Decorations going up, decorations coming down, and favorite old recipes cooked and enjoyed. Late nights watching good movies, visits with family, year end sales to catch and conversations over coffee….

Working from a home office, it can be very difficult to concentrate on work with so much going on around you. Several times I woke early with the intention of getting a bit of work done, only to have the day take off in a whirl out from under me – sweeping me right along with it.

I didnt fight it too much of course. The holidays only come around once a year… and it wont be long now before the kids are grown and off on their own. Besides, I figured a break was probably in order ;-) .

I must admit, it did me a world of good. I feel rested and refreshed, and very excited about the year ahead. I have great plans in mind and am looking forward to putting those to paper and mapping out another successful year.

Today will be spent with a few catch-up tasks, a bit of housework, and one last day with everyone home together. I’m grateful for that – for the opportunity to spend this time with my children and the flexibility to take off over the holidays. That I can spend time with great friends too, take all the kids out for an evening, and sit up all night with my best friend when she needs me.

2007 marks my 10th year in business, working from a home office. And no matter how hectic it gets, or hard it can be to juggle home/work at times, I wouldnt want it any other way!

Best,

That is so true Lynn. My kids are home for another week yet. But it is great to be able to spend the time with the kids, friends and family.

I will certainly be glad to get back on schedule myself and get 2007 of to a profitable start ;)

My kids go back to school & pre-school next Monday, and today is the first day for my hubby at a new job, so I’m in the process of figuring out how to get everything done I need to with the kids underfoot lol.

Not that I mind however, as I do love having the time with them and am more than thankful to be working from home :) Kids grow soooo darned fast and I always feel sorry for those families who work out of the home full time and only have a few meager hours a day (if that) with their children.

I agree – and I remember it all too well. My son was 5 years old when I quit my last “real job”… and that was a tough 5 years!

The difference is small for me so far. My oldest only has preschool 3 hours a day, 3 days a week. With a younger one underfoot I probably get less done when she’s in school since there’s no one to distract my son from wanting Mommy.

On the other hand, due to having company my inlaws haven’t been up to having my kids overnight, so I did lose some of my good working time.

We had a similar situation in our house. We had older kids home from college, (they have since gone back), friends in from out of town (gone too), food, shopping, etc.

We took the decorations down this past weekend, and Emily went back to school yesterday.

It was so quiet in here yesterday. It was very strange going from a house full of people to just me and the puppy, but it’s nice to ease back to our regular routine.

I can relate Patty… its a very quiet morning here, and I am enjoying a cup of coffee and being back on my early schedule. I miss the kids already though :p
