Writing My $7 Report
posted on April 6th, 2007
Since reading the $7 Secret and the follow-up report titled Write That Report!, I have thought of a dozen possible reports I might like to write. I have finally settled on a topic and am ready to sit down and write my own report using the $7 method.
If you are not familiar with this method or these reports, see Writing Reports for $$
This post will detail out my thought process, starting with a blank slate and the strategies learned from Jonathan Leger in his 2 how-to reports. It will be the first in a series of posts to create a Case Study for the process of writing and selling these $7 reports.
As you can see, from the image above, I am starting out with a blank slate - a blank document that I want to turn into a profitable product that serves as both a revenue stream and a viral marketing tool.
The obvious first step is to choose a topic. If you already have a website, you want to choose a topic that will interest your target market and serve as a viral marketing tool to bring new visitors to your site. If you dont have a website, or want to create a report in a different niche, then you should choose a topic that you are knowledgeable and/or passionate about.
I used my usual method of writing content for the web and brainstorming topic ideas. I noted a common problem for my target market, and knew that I had the solution - and that I could research any necessary details. The only job now is to put that solution to paper, and package it in a way that appeals to the people who need it…
Dont get hung up on this step - I do realize that choosing a topic or angle for your Report is probably the most difficult task involved in the process. But I’ll help you with that - just keep reading along
Before I begin writing the actual report, I make a quick list of things to consider in the process and then prioritize that list. My list currently looks like this:
- domain name
- hosting
- cover graphic
- title & tag line
This first list is important because some of these things take time, and I want them to all be ready and in place when it is time to release my Report publicly.
The hosting is covered because I already have a HostGator account. They allow you to host unlimited sites for less than $7/month, so I can simply set up a new site on that account at no additional cost. I do want to go ahead and choose a domain name, get that registered, and have it point to my host. This takes 2-3 days, so I want to get that out of the way.
Next on my list is choosing a graphic designer for my cover graphic. This may take a few days as well, so I want to make sure I have that ready. I plan to create a professional “sales page” that features my Report and makes it easy for visitors to order it. You can always create your own graphics, but I prefer to hire it out. Its relatively inexpensive to get high-quality graphics that make your product and sales page look professional.
Obviously I have to choose a title and tag line for my Report so that I can submit that to my graphic designer, as it will be included on the actual cover graphic…
- jv partners/affiliates
- build a list
- lead-ins (promotion angles)
- backends
This second list is just a few random thoughts at the moment (I’ll flesh this out as I go) - but things that I want to consider in the development phase. Its important to consider how you will promote your Report, who you might contact for joint ventures or who would be most interested in your affiliate program, what your promotion angles are, what type of list you want to build and how you can monetize that list long-term.
With all of these things in mind, and with the graphic designer working on the Report Cover behind the scenes, my next step is to create an outline and begin working on my Rough Draft…
Stay tuned!
Best,

Hey Lynn!
I’m glad to see you doing this…I’m in it with you. I had an idea for one when I read the $7 report and started outlining it at that time. I’ve been mulling it over lately and I really want to push forward with it. I’m looking forward to being accountable to you again!
Excellent! I look forward to seeing what you release. Keep me posted along the way, and of course if there is any way I can help with or if you need to brainstorm… I’ll meet you in the private forum!
Hey Lynn,
I am 90% done with my first $7 report. I took your advice and went that route. I think it will work really well.
Later
