Modern Day Titanic

Just this morning a cruise ship sank off the coast of a Mediterranean island… like a modern-day titanic, but fortunately with only 2 passengers missing.

Completely off topic, yes – but even Internet Marketers keep an eye on the world news. Interestingly, it took 15 hours for the ship to sink… and 15 minutes for the entire world to get the news and photos about it. I caught the story on Yahoo! News as I was going about my work this morning.

Authorities said two French passengers â€” Jean-Christophe Allain, 45, and his 16-year-old daughter, Maud â€” had still not been accounted for. Tourism Minister Fanny Palli Petralia said she had spoken with the missing passenger’s wife.

“The lady said her cabin filled with water when the ship struck rocks and that she narrowly escaped,” Petralia said. “She was not sure whether her husband and daughter made it out because things happened so suddenly … in a few seconds. Her other child was up on deck and was evacuated safely.” (source)

According to the news story, the Sea Diamond was touring the Greek islands and carrying 1,195 passengers and 391 crew members. Apparently the cruise ship struck a volcanic reef, causing immediate damage followed by panic and evacuation…

Investigators were questioning the captain and three officers about Thursday’s crash into rocks, which are marked with warning lights and clearly indicated on navigation charts.

How very sad… I cant help but think what that one woman must be feeling today, knowing she may have lost her husband and daughter.
