Update! See: http://www.easymobilestore.com for a super simple solution to creating mobile websites & stores!

When I logged into my Google Adsense account today, I noticed a link for “Adsense for Mobile” which lead me to this information:

Get started with AdSense for Mobile
Enhance your mobile website – and your profits – with targeted ads from Google.

Gain exposure to the large and growing number of mobile advertisers.

Finally unlock the full revenue potential of your mobile site by displaying Google ads.

Don’t have a mobile website? Learn more…

I hadnt really considered creating a mobile website, and honestly dont know that much about it, so I decided to look into it…

Here are some of the current searches for “mobile website”, the number being the approximate number of searches per day across the major search engines:

74 mobile websites
29 mobile phone websites
19 mobile website
14 mobile website hosting
14 websites for free sms from the web to mobile phone
12 pda mobile websites
10 best mobile adult websites
10 mobile friendly website
10 mobile friendly websites
8 code to redirect to mobile website
7 mobile news websites
7 pda mobile device browser website
5 asp direct to mobile website
5 implementing a website on a mobile phone
5 microsoft expression web redirect to mobile website
359 disney mobile
350 windows mobile 6
222 mobile broadband
204 mobile phone tools
199 free mobile downloads
181 mobile internet
171 mobile software

Obviously this is a growing trend, and something that online marketers will want to stay in tune with. In fact, I’m surprised we havent seen a report or info product hit the market yet with a marketing strategy for reaching the mobile users…

The question most marketers will ask first is “How do I create a mobile website?“

Google says:

If you don’t currently have a mobile website (and chances are, if you’re not sure, then you don’t have one), you can create one by rewriting your existing website in a mobile markup language, such as XHTML, WML, or CHTML. You’ll also need to make sure the layout of your website is properly formatted to display on mobile phones.

A quick search produced Mobi, a free mobile website design tool. The service is free, doesnt require any technical knowledge, is guaranteed to work consistently across all mobile phones, and even includes a support forum.

Just this week MySpace Mobile was launched by Fox Interactive Media. Will independent site owners and online entrepreneurs follow suit?

Feel free to leave your comments and questions below. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic, and the potential of marketing with a mobile website…

Lately Google Adsense seems to be cloaking the Display URL on their Ad Units. And this really ticks me off for two very good reasons:

1) If I want to add a specific advertiser to my Competitive Ad Filter, so that it no longer displays on my site, I have no way to do that. The only way to do that is to put the Base URL into the filter. NOT cool for publishers!

2) If I am interested in something an advertiser has to offer, I NEVER click on the Ad Units on my own site. Instead I mouse over them (if the URL doesnt display with the ad itself) and note the address then open a new window to visit that site.

The screen shot of the Ad that you see in the top right corner of this post is a good example. They are showing up all over my sites, and obviously site-targeting my domains. And I have no way to remove their ads from my sites.

Why in the world would Google do this?

If anyone has a good answer for this, I’m all ears!

Just this morning I posted an update about my Free Weekly Webinars. I am looking for a new conference solution, so I was particularly interested in the related Ads that displayed in my Google Adsense unit.

I cant click on my own ads. And I cant even find out which site to check out!

Grrr

Does this not TICK YOU OFF?

What gives?

Google Adsense is offering a new option when you set up your ad format. You’ll see it on the Choose Ad Format and Colors page at the very bottom. The option is to use the traditional square corners, or the new rounded corners.

Most Adsense experts will advise you not to use borders at all, blending your ads into your page seamlessly, so this option will not be of interest to most publishers. However, it may fit in very well with some of the newer Web 2.0 themes…

To give you a visual of how these new ad formats look, you can see the rounded corner option below.

Be sure to set up a new “channel” if you decide to test this ad format, so that you can compare how well it performs compared to your original ad format.

If you have logged into your Google Adsense account lately, you have probably noticed a new message just under the Earnings Overview section. Its called an Optimization Report, and will read something like this:

Dear Publisher,

Here is your optimization report for the month of April. After an automatic review of your sites, we think you might be able to improve your monetization using the following tips…

My own report said “You may be filtering ads that monetize well on your site.” Many others have reported the same (source). In addition to sharing the account-specific tip, Google offers a help file related to their suggestion. In my case, a link to Keep your filter list small.

I wont be following this advice, though. The URL’s that I have listed in my Competitive Ad Filter are those that were “site targeting” my websites. For more on that, see: Adsense – Getting Paid Per Impression.

Still, the Optimization Report is an interesting new feature and I look forward to seeing the tips they offer in coming months.

Best,

In the original article, I discussed how to monetize website traffic. Each page should be monetized specifically for the ideal visitor, give them what they expect from that page, and contain a clear call-to-action. This article goes into more depth about the call-to-action.

This tutorial is specifically about using a “call to action” in your content, and strategically leading your visitors to and through your website.

A clear call to action tells your visitors what you expect them to do, and what they can expect when they do that. It will lead your visitors strategically through your website, in a clear path.

Time is valuable to your visitors just as it is to you. Make no assumptions. Tell your readers what you want them to do. Specifically how to do it. And why they should do it. They will appreciate this more than you know!

To begin, let’s look at two obvious perspectives. Yours, as the content writer. And your visitors, as the content reader…

Why Do You Write It?

Take a look at one of your content pages as an example. Go ahead – open a new window and pick a content page on your own website. Now ask yourself “What was my main objective with the content on this page?”

You can also look at it this way: If you were going to track the conversion of this page, what action would you be tracking specifically?

Make sure that each page has a main objective, and a clear call to action to achieve that objective.

Why Does Your Visitor Read It?

Even more important is knowing why people read that page on your website. How did they find it? What were they looking for? Did they find what they were looking for? What do they do next?

You have a fair amount of control over ALL of these factors.

Put yourself in your visitors shoes and walk through your website from their perspective. Go back to the keyword phrase that your visitors use to find that page in the search engines (your stats program will give you this data). Analyze how your page looks in the search results.

As your ideal visitor, why would you click on that listing? What are you looking for, and hoping to find? Now click – did you find it??

For more on this, including an example, see:
How To Monetize Website Traffic

Where You Should Use The Call-To-Action

The call to action can be used to bring traffic to your website, in addition to leading them through your website. All traffic comes in and goes out. Your goal is to direct that traffic in a deliberate course, from entry to exit.

Below are 5 examples of places that you can strategically use a call to action:

Description Meta Tag

Meta tags are found in your HTML code in the heading area at the top. While the keyword meta tag carries very little weight, the description tag is used to describe your page in search engine listings.

You can use this opportunity to encourage click-throughs from the major search engines. Here is an example where my primary site ranks #1 on Google for “learn internet marketing”:

As you can see, the description invites them to join the free community and grow their business by learning internet marketing strategies. It includes the keyword phrase, and has a clear call to action.

Optional Excerpt in WordPress

This will be incredibly valuable if you blog using WordPress…

When you create a blog post, WordPress will take a snippet of that post and use it as your excerpt on the category pages – and also in your Feed (if you chose to display excerpts instead of full posts).

Unfortunately, it doesnt always display the best little snippet. With the Optional Excerpt, though, you can create your own excerpt of each individual post. This will allow you to write a specific description, including a call to action that will encourage visitors to click through to your full blog post.

Article Byline

Article Marketing is great for increasing your exposure and getting quality inbound links, but its also great for getting targeted traffic directly from that article to your website.

There are two things to increase the effectiveness of your Byline or Resource Box. First, use a compelling call to action that directly relates to the individual article. Second, link to an internal (specific) page on your website that the reader would be most interested in.

At the end of my article about Digital Picture Frames, for example, my byline reads:

Digital Picture Frames come in a wide variety of styles, with various specs. To see 8 stylish models that are affordable for family and home use, visit: http://www.clicknewz.com/digital-picture-frame.htm

Newsletters & Autoresponders

You dont have to use a “hard sell” tactic in every email message that you send, but you do want to include a clear call to action. Asking your readers to respond in some way will keep your list “warm” and responsive.

Make your emails interactive, even when you arent promoting or selling anything. You may invite them to email you with questions about the topic, or post their comments on the online version of the same article.

Content Pages

Last but not least, we come to content pages. As I pointed out earlier, each page of your site should have an objective – even if that objective is simply to lead them into the main page of your site.

Write your content with that purpose in mind, and lead your reader into taking the desired action. Those actions might include:

- Sign up for a mailing list
- Purchase your product
- Purchase a product you are promoting as an affiliate
- Click on contextual advertising, such as Adsense
- Fill out a form
… etc.

To give you an example, let’s say that you archive your newsletter issues online. You’ll probably find that they attract quite a bit of search engine traffic. When someone arrives on your site, and scrolls all the way down reading one of your great issues… what should they do when they get to the end?

This is your opportunity to invite them to subscribe! They obviously liked what you had to say well enough to read the entire page – so dont leave them hanging .

With product sales or affiliate marketing, your call to action should be very direct. You should convince them to take action, make the action obvious and easy, and let them know what to expect once they take that action.

With contextual advertising, you have to be careful – you often arent allowed to ask people to click on the ads or links. Instead, you want to the content to lead and encourage the reader, and then place your ads very strategically on the page.

Make sure that whatever you are doing has a “call to action” and ultimately convinces the reader to move in the preferred direction for their “next click”. Your task is to welcome your visitor with open arms, show them exactly what they came for, and lead them directly to the next step that they need to take.

For more in-depth examples and step-by-step help for using a strong call to action in your copy, study Call To Action by best-selling authors Brian & Jeffrey Eisenberg:

In a recent blog post, Joel Comm asks Are Your Ads In Order?

When using multiple adsense units, it pays to track each unit on the web page separately. You can do this by setting up Channels in your Adsense account. The reason is because the highest paying ads are shown in the first unit that shows on your page (or more accurately, the first unit that is shown within the page’s code).

If you are running three units per page, and the adsense unit in your footer gets the most click-through’s… then you may be losing money.

To quote Joel (“adsense expert”):

If, for example, you have a leaderboard at the top of your page but most clicks are made on a square ad unit embedded in an article, you might want to try removing the leaderboard and comparing your results. You might find that the extra cost-per-click on your most popular units make up for the lost clicks on the leaderboard. (source)

What you want to do is track each ad unit’s performance, and then test variations on your site. Regardless of what you read in the forums or on other websites, how YOUR site performs is the true test. There are many variables involved, including layout & design, target market, niche, etc.

To give you an example, there are generally two Adsense units on any given page here at ClickNewz. One at the top of the content, and one just below the content (above the Comment section). The Adsense unit at the bottom (within the content area) performs slightly better – or gets a higher click through rate – than the unit at the very top of the page.

Since the higher paying ads are shown at the top of the page, it would make sense to see how it affects my overall revenue when I remove that first set of ads. Obviously the higher-paying ads would then show in the Adsense unit that gets more click-through’s…

Best,

The Fair Ads Network is officially launching this week, though they are only allowing 10,000 to sign up during their Beta release. Obviously 10k is a drop in the bucket compared to the number of people that will be interested in “FAN”, so you’ll want to sign up quick to ensure that you get a spot now.

What is F.A.N.?

FAN stands for Fair Ads Network, and is a contextual advertising system similar to Google Adsense and Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN). Instead of being a direct competitor, FAN considers themselves more of a “positive alternative”. While they are a contextual ad network, you’ll find a variety of fresh options and user controls that you wont find in other networks.

Check it out: FairAdsNetwork.com, read the FAQ, and decide for yourself

The official launch date is expected to be late March or early April. But if you plan to use their Referral Program to recommend FAN and earn commissions during official launch, you will want to go ahead and sign up during this beta launch.

There is an option to upgrade to a Master Marketer membership, which is usually 19.99/month. During this beta launch, you can upgrade for only 9.99/month and your membership will remain at that price even during and after the official launch.

This is the option that I took, and here is some more information on that – copied from within my new account:

CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT

VIRAL VIDEOS
We will be introducing our viral video advertising campaigns upon launch. The way it will work is an advertiser will upload their video and we will host it on our servers (basically like YouTube). The publisher then displays it on their website and if a viewer likes it, they will have the option to “share this video.”

What happens then is every time that video gets shared and shown on another page, the publisher’s ID is secretly embedded in the video ad and will benefit the publisher for every click produced through it. Even when someone clicks on the ad to register as a FAN member, the publisher will get credit for it.

VIRAL TEXT ADS
Other ad networks usually have the text, “Ad by …..” and instantly gives away that the ad is indeed an ad. However, we will display the text, “I’m a FAN!” This will burn an interest for the viewer to want to click on it and find out what you are a FAN of. This makes getting referrals a cinch.

HUMANITARIAN PROJECT
While no other network allows NGOs (non-government organizations) and non-profit organizations to advertise, we would like to give these organizations the chance to advertise for free through our network. If you are a publisher, you can help us by accepting their ads as a charity. All NGOs and non-profit organizations will be thoroughly screened and constantly monitored so you will have the ease of mind of whether they will post inappropriate ads.

SECRET WEAPON
Sorry, we can only tease you about it but we cannot give you the full details on it. Let’s just say, we are making something usually available to only huge companies and corporations that could afford this and make it available to everyday marketers just like you. Hey, the little guys gotta eat, too, right?

MASTER MARKETER
Oh boy, the things we can say about this. We’ll keep it simple and just give you a list of benefits and features of this membership:

Can view your top ad statistics of up to 100 instead of only 25. This is not your ad channels, this is an additional feature.

Can see what the most responsive types of ads (including second and least popular) – regular members won’t see this. This will help you determine what to use without wasting your money.

Can see the most popular categories and sub-categories. This can help you create niche websites and businesses that would focus specifically on these categories.

Can see company statistics free members and guests will never know:
a. # of advertisers
b. # of publishers
c. # of campaigns
d. # of ads served
e. Total paid out to publishers

Send emails/messages to all referrals twice a week. The limitation will prevent anyone from abusing the system.

Block emails/messages from sponsor. Hey, when you’re a “master marketer” you don’t want to be the one still receiving messages from your referrer, do you? You can if you want. The option will be available. Free members will not.

Interstitial ads are free (normally $5 setup fee for each campaign). Since interstitial ads are one of our most powerful methods of marketing, you’ll want to take advantage of this. If you were to create 20 of these campaigns, you’d be saving $100 just setting them up.

Rich media ads are free (normally $5 setup fee for each campaign). Our rich media (video) ads will also be an arsenal you don’t want to let go. We just covered it earlier.

As an added bonus, your specified website will be shown every time a member logs out of his/her account. It’s kind of like a pop-up, but instead of popping up, they would go directly to your website. This won’t cost you any additional fees! You can add up to 3 domains for rotation.

One more benefit is, instead of earning 60% of every click and every action, you’ll earn 70%! That’s unheard of in any ad network.

If you are interested in the Master Marketer membership, it will be only $19.99 a month. However, if you signup as an Early-Bird Master Marketer, we will knock off 50%! That’s right, if you upgrade to the Master Marketer before we begin the Beta version or before we receive 10,000 members, it will be only $9.99 a month forever.

Before you freak out about whether you’ll receive commissions for upgraded members or not, yes, you do! You’ll get 40% of all upgraded members every single month. However, you must also be an upgraded member to receive commissions!

Unlike other companies, if you’re the last minute type of person, when you do decide to upgrade, your referral commissions will kick in for the following month. Other companies will usually just toss you out of the loop and never give you the commission because you upgraded after your own referrals.

When Beta is here or when we reach 10,000 members, the price will be brought back to $19.99 a month. Remember, you can only take advantage of this if you upgrade before Beta.

This should be interesting to watch, and also to test! I intend to test the system out as both an advertiser and a publisher – and particularly like the fact that you can transfer funds from one account to the other, basically paying for your own advertising out of your revenue generated as a publisher. Obviously the referral program has a lot of potential for recurring earnings as well…

If you’re not already “in”, I’m referring you now!

I have earned $377.88 in affiliate commissions so far with practically NO effort. Literally less than 10 minutes and less than ten dollars invested. I can only imagine what someone would earn that is actively promoting this program...

Last week I mentioned a new product out called AdSpyTracker. This is an Adsense Tracking Software that you set up on your hosting server which tracks practically everything associated with Adsense…

It is currently selling at a very low limited-time offer of only $10. What’s interesting is the way that the affiliate program is structured:

With our affiliate program, you get 100% commissions on the front end! And then you’ll even get paid 20% on the upsell, one time offer. With our average conversion rates of around 10% on the front end sale of AdSpyTracker, Just 100 Visitors Could Bring You Over $300!

Of course, the product would sell itself even at a higher price, given the much-needed stats that it offers Adsense publishers. Considering the quality of the product itself, the huge number of people signed on to Google Adsense, and the obviously affordable price… you have all of the ingredients you need for easy affiliate commissions.

Being an Adsense publisher myself, and also having several websites that thousands of other Adsense publishers visit and read, I ordered a copy of this program the minute I heard about it.

Since they have a closed affiliate program – which means that only their paying customers may promote the product or earn commission for referrals – even those only interested in the affiliate program will order at under $10 .

As I mentioned, I purchased AdSpyTracker myself for $9.99. I downloaded the program and the bonuses, checked out the affiliate program, and mentioned the product on my blog. I then sent out an email to my subscribers, as I knew this would interest them as well.

I have earned $377.88 in affiliate commissions so far with practically NO effort. Literally less than 10 minutes and less than ten dollars invested. I can only imagine what someone would earn that is actively promoting this program.

If the product was junk, this model wouldnt work. But the product being worth 10x the asking price (minimum), and being a much-needed product to a large target market at that, it holds a lot of value and will get highly recommended.

You have two target markets here: Adsense Publishers and Affiliate Marketers. The product obviously sells itself, so if you have a website that caters to either of these groups, this is a program to give some serious consideration.

By the time I hit the ‘publish’ button on this article, the amount I shared above will have already changed. This product is practically flying off the shelves! If you havent already joined the program, you’ll want to sign up before the price goes up .

Here’s the link again: www.adspytracker.com.

Last week I mentioned MegaGlobe, which is an up and coming international search engine… and this week I have a new piece of news on them.

The latest press release states that they will indeed be offering a contextual advertising option for webmasters that rivals Google Adsense.

They are getting the attention of website owners everywhere by promising higher payouts and better compensation plans…

“Naima has said that Megaglobe will share revenue generated from advertising keywords with webmasters more equitably thereby recognising the importance search engines place on their partnership with webmasters.”

Again, be sure to visit the Megaglobe – International Search Engine and submit your websites to their database. They are currently crawling the web and preparing for a full launch. With search, sponsored listings and contextual advertising… and ‘word’ of competing with Google for webmasters’ attention… this is one to keep in your radar .

This quick list of Adsense Q&A is taken from my eBiz Discussion Forum. Feel free to click on the questions/topics and comment on them yourself. You do have to register to participate in the forum, but it’s free & easy

What Adsense products would you promote?
I would (and do) promote Joel Comm’s Adsense Guide. It is very thorough and helpful and comes with some great bonuses to boot (case study report, etc). You can see my review here. I also really liked William Charlwoods Definitive Guide to Adsense. This was the first manual that I read, and I found it to be exceptional material.

Should I consider using Adsense Portals?
Considering all of the time you would need to spend customizing, optimizing and marketing this so that it actually earns money… you could develop something unique in that same amount of time.

I am wondering why my eCMP has gone down.
According to Scott Boulch, Smart Pricing is what happened. Basically, advertisers at Adwords were given the option to choose different amounts to pay in search results than on content sites (Adsense), so they bid much lower for those clicks – still paying the higher rates for their ads on search results pages.

Are there any viable Adsense alternatives?
Besides YPN (Yahoo Publisher Network), which is a great alternative, I see alot of people using Chitika. You might also look into FastClick – which is at ValueClick.com. You could also consider promoting pay-per-sale affiliate programs that are a match for your site…

When to use Google Adsense?
You have to ask yourself: What is my main objective? If it’s to make product sales, you dont want to distract your potential buyers with links to competing sites. Adsense is usually better served on content based sites…

If you have Adsense-related questions, feel free to post them in the Contextual Advertising category at the forum!

I’ve been busy this past week with some of my own priorities, so I havent kept my ear to the ground on the big Adsense debate since I read Scott Boulch’s Life After Adsense report. I thought perhaps the dust would have settled by now – but a quick glance at my inbox tells me it hasnt…

I noticed that Rosalind Gardner mirrored my own thoughts on the topic, saying in her newsletter: “Although I dont completely concur with Scott’s ‘Adsense is Dead’ rant, I do agree that no one should ever rely solely on Adsense, so I think Scott’s report is a worthwhile read from that perspective alone.”

Joel Comm responded with an Adsense is Alive! report. Prior to that, he sent out an email building anticipation for the report, in which he said:

“Their underhanded methods of ripping off Google and Google’s advertisers is no longer effective. Plain and simple.”

And in another email:

“Content, content, content.

Write it yourself. Outsource it. Get volunteers to create it.

But one way or another, always add fresh new content.”
