I set up a new HostGator account last week and I’ve been having all kinds of disconnect issues, as well as incredibly slow loading pages and images.

I figured it was something to do with that site specifically, as I have several other HostGator accounts that seem to be doing just fine… but I’ve heard reports from other users that they are experiencing the same on their end.

That’s exactly what several of my sites are displaying today, and I’m NOT happy about it. I happened to be on one of my sites, so I know precisely when it happened – around 4:30pm EST – with the email notification following a few minutes later (at 4:34)…

I cant even log in to my control panel, mind you – but I know for a fact that I checked the little checkbox that said “please notify me if I begin to near my limits” – you know, so I could actually do something about it. Letting my websites go offline not being one of the things I would choose to do in that case, of course.

These sites are hosted with ThirdSphere. I thought to myself, Geez what could be the problem? I just paid my invoice plus a double bandwidth package on the 21st! I’ve been paying for the double bandwidth usage for well over a year, and now all of a sudden I use all of that within 7 days??

For the record, I am paying the ridiculous price of $49.90 for this particular hosting package (which hosts several of my sites), which includes the additional bandwidth usage cost.

I’ve had my account with ThirdSphere since June of 2004, and while I’ve had very few problems with the actual hosting – their support and customer service STINKS. Fortunately I havent had to use it that often.

The least they could have done was send me a notice in advance. But no – they take my sites offline first, and then notify me. And the real kicker? The notification email offered no resolution. Here are the contents of that message:

The domain webservicenetwork.com has reached its bandwidth limit.

Please contact the system admin as soon as possible.

!! Do not respond to this message. Your reply will go nowhere. !!

They have no telephone support whatsoever, so I submitted a ticket… almost 3 hours ago. I finally got a response just moments ago (while I was typing this actually) that tells me I need to purchase an additional bandwidth package. Fine – but they didnt include a link or instructions on how or where I should do that!

ThirdSphere can kiss my bandwidth – and my monthly billing – goodbye!

First things first. I have to pay whatever they want me to pay in order to access my control panel and get all of my files backed up. From there, I’m moving those sites to HostGator, the easy way. Its bad enough I’m overpaying for their service, but I really didnt need this hassle today.

Here’s hoping they get my sites back up promptly – and certainly before tomorrow’s Webinar! I’ll keep you posted…

ADDED: This is finally resolved with ThirdSphere. And good grief – all it took was $25 to get my sites back online . I dont know why they didnt just send an invoice or request the money several hours ago – but whatever. I’m relieved the sites are back online at the moment…

Eventually is here.

I have quite a few exciting changes, updates & additions to roll out in September. I have eluded to some of those including Web 2.0 Niche Affiliate Sites (which are taking the place of my static affiliate sites), the launch of my Affiliate Program, free weekly Webinars, etc.

The preparation for each of these projects includes installations and such. And of course there’s the matter of getting organized to easily manage it all. Obviously it is better to do my web hosting switchover now, versus waiting until everything is installed and ‘live’ and then trying to move it all over.

I hate to admit it, but somehow over the years it has all become a bit of a mess. 31 domain names, 23 subdomains, 19 email addresses, multiple databases and scripts running across several sites – you get the picture.

Fortunately it’s that small. At one time I had well over 100 domain names!

Its not that big a deal, really. Its just a matter of wrapping your mind around the details, organizing it the way you want it, creating an action plan that avoids any downtime, and then digging in (back-ups first, of course ).

For quite a few years now I have been hosting several of my sites at ThirdSphere. They have been a great web host, and I honestly have no complaints with them.

I signed on with them initially because they offer an all-in-one ecommerce package. There are built-in affiliate program managers, autoresponders, their “automation station”, etc. I had originally intended to use the affiliate program manager, which made the $24.95/month price well worth it for unlimited sites/domains & affiliate programs.

I have since decided to go with ClickBank + EasyClickmate to manage my affiliate programs. The primary selling point being that I want all of my products grouped together for my affiliates – including one log-in for stats and links, and one main location for affiliate management (VS managing each products program individually).

Another group of my sites are hosted on HostGator… and over the past year or two, I have really come to like them – A LOT. They offer a toll free number and Live Support (chat), which is something that ThirdSphere does not offer. They are also under $10/month, and that includes unlimited domains/sites per account.

And somehow I’m paying $50/month for my ThirdSphere account now. I believe its an add-on package for additional bandwidth or disk space that they are charging me for – but I havent been able to figure out exactly what it is. My assumption is a default email account somewhere is filling up or something – I’m honestly not sure.

Price is really the least of my worries. I just keep paying it every month and as long as my sites are up and running, it’s all good.

ThirdSphere has a unique control panel interface though, and while I have never had any problems finding my way around in there… it’s not “cpanel”. The more work I outsource, the more I find/hear that cpanel makes their lives much easier. And I agree – cpanel is definitely my preference too.

So I’m moving some sites around, from ThirdSphere to HostGator. I already have one account with them, and I am tempted to leave it as-is and open a couple of new accounts. I’m undecided on that point. I think I want to separate my two primary sites (which are both resource hogs) and then put my niche affiliate sites together on their own account.

But I’m undecided because it may just be beneficial to lump them all together, and then upgrade to a dedicated server at some point (probably sooner than later). HostGator offers reseller accounts and dedicated servers, so that’s definitely an option…

When you are looking for a web hosting provider, is pricing your main concern?

When it comes to web hosting, most people prefer and recommend a host that offers cPanel. It is a feature-rich Control Panel that offers one-click applications that are incredibly easy to use. Once you get familiar with cPanel, it is a feature you look for in any web hosting company that you do business with.

But across all of the web hosts that offer cPanel… it seems that most compete by price. Granted, this is a smart tactic for hosting providers that target the ‘newbie market’, as they are probably more concerned with price than with features they arent yet familiar with.

Being a big fan of the V7 Network, I decided to read on. They make no qualms about their pricing structure, and in fact that state upfront that V7inc is not for everyone:

V7 was founded on the principle of spare-no-expense and provide the best hosting possible. This means we do not compete price-wise with the majority of web hosts out there.

And if you read through their testimonials, you’ll find that even Aaron Wall (SEObook.com) uses V7inc for at least two of his own sites. If you’re familiar with Aaron, that in itself is a very high recommendation.

Would I pay more for quality web hosting? Absolutely! I’ve been in the business long enough to know just what downtime and poor support can cost. Would I recommend it to someone that was completely new to online business and working on their first website? Probably not – you can get your feet wet on a good lower-priced web host like HostGator.

I use a variety of web hosts myself (some cheap, some not-so-cheap), each for their own reason, and am looking seriously at V7inc for my next account. What do YOU look for in web hosting… and is price one of the major factors when making the final decision?

Once you upload your files, you will be given a link to use wherever you like. This is great for people who want to share large files via email, or post videos and audio clips on their MySpace profile. You can even use it to share media files in posts on discussion forums or anywhere that you would like to share large files without paying for hosting.

How do I create my website?

There are so many options that it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start. Should I hire a web designer? What would I expect to pay? How do I know who to hire? What will the website do for me?

A good web designer will sit down with you and develop both a website and marketing plan, based on your most general thoughts and questions. They will know what you should be asking, and will outline all of the details that you might not have even considered.

Unfortunately, since you dont know these details upfront, you have no way of knowing if you are working with a professional… or someone who just has basic knowledge of website design and “a package” to sell you.

Note: GOOD web designers know that they can earn far more developing their own websites (monetizing them with advertising or affiliate programs) than they can by charging you for their service. This leaves you weeding out those who love to make money upfront regardless of the results… from the designers who truly love design work. Your best bet is to work with web designers that are personally recommended to you, and to get quotes and information from several developers or companies.

Should I design my own website?

This is certainly an option that you should seriously consider. It’s much easier than you think, and you will benefit in the long run from having the basic knowledge and experience. Being involved in the development of your website, and in your marketing plan, means that you have more control over the results.

If you want to make a change, you’ll know how to do that. If you decide to add a new page to your site, no problem. While you can always outsource these tasks, or any specific piece of your web development project, it is nice to be able to go in and make simple changes or additions when necessary.

Where do I start?

The absolute easiest and least expensive way to develop your own website is to use a template. You can get very nice templates at www.BasicTemplates.com for around $12. For that price you will get the graphics and the web page, and you can use this template to create each page of your website.

Since you probably dont ‘know code’, you will need an HTML Editor to edit the template and add your own content to each page. You can download NVU (a free editor) at www.NVU.com. If you can use Word, or create fancy emails, then you can use the NVU program – it’s just as simple .

I made a website… Now what?

Your next step is to put your new website on the web so that other people can see it. You will need a domain name (www dot something dot com), which will be the “address” of your website. You can register a domain name for $8.95 at www.GoDaddy.com. You want to choose something that describes your website or business, and that is easy to say and spell. It may take you awhile to find a domain name that is not already taken, but dont give up – get creative!

Once your domain is registered, you will need a hosting account. This is where you upload your files (your website and your images) and where your online business will be ‘hosted’. I use and recommend HostGator, simply because they have tons of great features at a very low price – under $10.

With your HostGator account, you will get access to features such as: shopping carts, email accounts, blogs, forums, guestbooks, traffic statistics and much more. They even allow you to host multiple websites and domains on the one account, all for the same price.

Once you sign up with HostGator, simply log in and read through the information that they offer. They will show you how to upload your files to your new account, how to set up your email addresses, and anything else that you need to know.

But once you get it installed, it’s time to customize your new store and give it a unique look and feel. This is where most people run into problems.

A great solution – and especially so if you are developing multiple stores on the internet – is to use The osCommerce Cafe. For only $89 you can access their entire library of custom osCommerce templates, as well as their support & knowledge base.

The ‘cafe’ was set-up by Myles O’Reilly in March of this year. Myles is also the author of the popular book titled The Programmers’ Guide to osCommerce. Another good resource you may want to add to your collection if you are going this route!
