Livescribe SmartPen : From Paper to YouTube

Every week on the IMTW Podcast we each share a Pick of the Week. In last weeks episode Ed Dale mentioned the LiveScribe Smartpen, which is a multimedia pen that automatically captures everything you write or draw.

Not only does it record every penstroke you make... it records audio as well.

You can then replay the penstrokes and audio and share them as a multimedia presentation - actually as an MP3, a PDF file or even as a YouTube video.

This little gem is an info-product developer's dream come true! Whether you are brainstorming and mindmapping, or taking notes at an industry event, you can easily share it all as a total replay.

Here are a couple of video walk-throughs to give you a better idea of how the Livescribe Smartpen works, and what all you can do with it:

Just imagine how useful this would be for sharing ideas, creating audio/visual stories, recording both audio & penned notes at a seminar or conference, or to refer back to after client meetings...

When you order the Livescribe Smartpen you get:

  • The Pulse smartpen
  • 2 GB of memory
  • Livescribe Desktop software
  • 3-D Recording Headset
  • 100 sheet dot paper college-ruled notebook
  • USB mobile charging cradle
  • Smartpen case
  • 3 black fine point ink cartridges + 1 stylus cartridge
  • Demo card and interactive stickers
  • Interactive Getting Started Guide

The Livescribe Smartpen is now Mac-compatible as well as PC. It only works with Livescribe dot paper, which comes with your original order, but you may want to order extra paper. You'll also have the option to print the dot paper from your computer too.

If you order at you'll get a discount on multiple items, plus free shipping. I'm off to order mine! πŸ˜‰

I am trying to decide if I want it for Christmas. My wife is always wanting to know what to buy for me. I just want to make sure I will use it. Don't want it to just be other toy that I toss aside in a month. But with that said.

I think it would be very cool for mind mapping.

  2. Definitely cool for mindmapping - also cool for creating audio/visual stories to illustrate a point to your target market, or to share your experience from a live event... I'm thinking of all kinds of neat ways to put this gadget to good use!

At under $200, the price is right - and a small investment for the value it offers in creative solutions. I'm definitely grabbing one, and cant wait to test it out πŸ˜€

  3. There are so many cool uses for this pen!

I even saw a review on YouTube that a deaf person did, in sign language, explaining how deaf people could use it to take to the doctor and have the doctor talk and write notes, so that if there was anything that the patient had questions on from the notes later, they could replay that section for a hearing friend and find out exactly what the doctor said.

  4. Can be great Christmas gift.

  5. That is insanely cool! I have GOT to get one of those πŸ™‚

I could see teaching kids how to draw with that.
Wow, the possibilities are really inspiring!

Thanks for the heads up, Lynn!

  6. I pop over for a quick visit to see what Lynn Terry is doing and *POW* she hits me with a cool ass pen!

    I want that.

    I want that for seminars.

I want that for teaching my followers.

    It will make me powerful.

It will help me RULE THE WORLD!

  7. LOL Jason - Great to see you!!

  8. I have wanted this pen for almost 6 months now. The only thing that stopped me from buying it was the fact that it didn't transcribe audio into notes. I would so love it if did.

It is still very high on my list of must have's though.

  9. This pen is amazing.

  10. Hey, Lynn! This looks a lot better than the FlyTop pen and one I'm definitely adding to my wish list.

However, I was glad for another reason that you added this post and your next to your blog. I needed to buy a gift for my sister-in-law last minute on Thanksgiving and I turn to Amazon gift certificates in these situations. I was in a hurry, but wanted to give someone the Amazon affiliate credit and I thought of this post of yours which I assume contains your affiliate link. (at least I hope so, didn't check) So hopefully you got credit (though I'm sure it was small). πŸ˜‰

  11. hey i just got this pen as a graduation gift, and it's helped me so much this last semester. i know right now livescribe is promoting the pen with a 10% discount and free shipping when you use the code: SCRIBE5A20 on their website to order it. one of the more useful gifts i've ever gotten πŸ™‚ hope i helped!

  12. Oh My that is so neat. Never knew of such a thing until now. May have to get it as a b-day gift for myself.
I am thinking of all the things I could do with that creatively.
    Many Blessings,

  13. Thank you Christy πŸ˜€

Natalie - good point! That would be an awesome feature, for sure. I have yet to unbox mine because I want to unbox it on video. Now that I have my new HD video cam all figured out, that's next on the list!

  14. Lynn,

This pen is truly awesome! I heard Sherman Hu talk about it and went out the same day to a local store to pick it up.

I love the idea of recording meetings, etc since I am a slow writer. Now I don't have to write so fast and poorly that I don't even know what I wrote afterwards! πŸ™‚

    I love gadgets. πŸ™‚

Wow Lynn - I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a piece of technology.

Last year I trialled Oxford's Papershow pen ( It seems to be based on pretty much the same technology - but was aimed at annotative presentations "live". It had to be linked to a computer (via bluetooth) when being used - so for me it ruled out 90% of the times I would want to use it.

This seems spot on - now I have to find a UK supplier.
