View Full Version : Forum keeps logging me out

Anyone else having this problem? I login and start searching. I start reading a thread. I decide to comment, but I've been logged out. I login again and compose my comment. I hit post and I'm logged out again. I login again and the comment will post.

This also happens when I'm starting a thread. It's quite annoying.

Which browser are you using, and what version?

Rick Olsen

I'm using SlimBrowser

Do you happen to have Firefox? If so, would you mind to test it in FF to see if you get the same thing? Trying to narrow down the issue...

I don't like firefox, but I've installed it and I'll use it from now on.

I didn't mean for you to do that - just wanted to narrow down which browsers we were having issues with :) Is it working properly in FF??

Haven't tried FireFox yet because I don't like it any more than IE. I just posted a comment on one of Steve's threads using SlimBrowser and wasn't logged out. I edited several times and wasn't logged out.

Maybe it fixed itself or something. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe fix the zip file problem instead? I'd really like those files.

When I am inactive in the forum for a short period of time after logging in, I seem to get logged out. Maybe thats what was happening?

I've been on it for weeks now, and haven't been logged out once. I'm curious to know if it's a browser issue, or what specifically. Pam - which browser are you using?

Currently, IE 8 but also happened when I work in FF 3.5.3.

Me, three! I've used Chrome, Firefox, and IE8, and get logged out while I'm reading other posts - or following links that are in posts. Seems to be about five minutes if I don't 'do' something.

Thank you so much for the replies - that helps me look in the right place for the solution :)

I thought this was only happening to me. Just to add a little note to all of these comments...I use FF and it seems that when I start to reply to a post by the time I am finished typing and get ready to submit I get "timed out" and have to reenter.

The problem with that is that when I reenter, what I have written in my reply is lost, so I have to start writing it all over again. I have tried to remedy that by copying what I have written into a notepad before I try to submit. Then when I have to reenter I paste it into the reply box and post the reply.

I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. Just thought I should let you know.

:)Christine

Hey wait a second, I got through right away that time. You must have fixed whatever was wrong. Yea!

Thanks Lynn

I usually have to log in again before replying if I haven't replied for a few minutes. I'm on Firefox 3.5.3. It didn't make me do it just now, I guess because I just logged in a couple of minutes ago.

It may be different versions of Firefox or a browser setting. I use Firefox 3.0.something and have never been logged out, even when I haven't been here for a couple days.

I am glad this thread started too. I have been logged out consistently since I joined. I was getting quite annoyed as well. I thought maybe there was a setting that I was overlooking in my profile or somewhere.

I am using the newest Firefox, but also have tried on IE8 as well with the same results.
(don't want to make this post too long or I will have to re-log in and start again! lol)

Thanks for looking into it for us Lynn, we wouldn't want to miss out on any great advice that could help us grow our business.

Lynn -- It's happened with SlimBrowser, IE8 and the latest FF. I've done some research. Apparently auto-logout occurres after 15 minutes of 'inactivity' (I think it's shorter). The assumption is that most people just close their browser instead of logging out correctly.

I was going to download and install the software to see how it works, but it's an expensive product.

Apparently, in your control panel you can fix this under:

AdminCP->vBulletin Options->Cookies and HTTP Header Options->Session Timeout

The 'Remember Me' function doesn't seem to work. From what I read on their forum there's really no good solution to this problem. It isn't a browser problem, it's a software problem. Seems to be a cookie issue.

Maybe you've never been logged out because you're the Forum Admin.

Thank you so much Rick - very much appreciated.

I just quadrupled the session timeout so it should now keep you logged in for up to an hour of inactivity. I'm not sure if you need to log out and back in for that to take effect, but do let me know (everyone) if that makes a difference on your end.

You're very welcome, Lynn. Hope I'm not coming across to people as a complainer. In the few short days I've been an Elite Member I've learned so much I just can't stay away. I've gotten my fire back. I'm addicted!

Awesome! Really glad you joined us ;)

Timeout issue fixed??

I logged out and then back in. Going on an hour and no problems. You might want to check on the Vbulletin support forum. There were threads that said changing the sessions cookie will mess up your forum stats. This is why I said there doesn't seem to be a good fix.

I think it's fixed, now! Thank you so much.
