That's not uncommon when you use a trademarked name like that. They want to buy the domains so you can't use them.

Hi - Last year I purchased a couple of domains akindle.net and akindle.info - then I linked them to my Amazon.com Kindle affiliate page. I never sold anything but recently got contacted by Amazon to "cease and desist" - also they are willing to buy the domains from me - has anyone heard of this before?

Kate, usually when a company sends a "cease and desist" letter, they explain why. Obviously, they think you're infringing on some type of trademark rights. What exactly did the cease and desist letter say?

I was just wondering if this is something "new" or if I really did something that I could get into trouble for.

Cease and desist letters are designed to scare you. That's the whole point. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

A few companies do not allow their name in Domain names or advertising.
Amazon and Aweber come to mind.
Anyone want to buy Facebookhandbook.com? It is trademarked and Sedo will not let me sell it because of the Facebook trademark.
Google has a trademark search engine to check on any terms you are thinking of using for a domain purchase.

No, it's not anything new. Most companies don't allow the use of their trademarked names in domains. There's no way they could possibly purchase every possible combination of words, letters & domain extensions - and they shouldn't have to.

They don't often offer to purchase the domain though - I would take them up on that.


Cease and desist letters are designed to scare you. That's the whole point. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

A C&D, or cease and desist letter, is designed to inform you that you must stop doing __ (fill in the blank) or face legal action. I would definitely take it seriously.

If they are willing to purchase the domains from you, I say go for it - you can end your potential legal troubles with them and make a few bucks in the process.
