View Full Version : Wordpress 2.8.5 Upgrade- not a good idea

I upgraded to 2.8.5 and found that the exclude tag no longer works. The pages and categories I'd excluded had reappeared in my navbars.

I had no idea how to un-upgrade so I had to wipe the installation, reinstall 2.8.4 and then rebuild my site.

If you're using the exclude tag I advise that you don't upgrade to 2.8.5

Hey Rick, Thanks for the heads up. I haven't upgraded yet because I am scared of what it might do . I have a hard time figuring that out.

I saw Matt Mullenweg (sp?) earlier this summer at a WordPress Camp. He's the guy who created WordPress.

Anyway, he said that we can expect an upgrade around the end of October, though from what I've read recently, this doesn't sound like a significant upgrade. Methinks that another one is around the corner. :)

It may also be related to the specific theme.

The one I started with several months ago - the one that was a freebie not listed on the WP.org site itself, but downloaded from someplace else - had significant problems when a WP update was applied to it. But that theme had problems with other things as well, which is why I dumped it in favor of one of the more standard freebie themes.

Nice to hear from you Rick, and thanks for the heads up.

Hehe, I wouldn't be surprised if we passed each other in the halls. :)

I tried 2.8.5 with several themes from simple to complex. The complex themes I tried were made for 2.8.x. The result was the same. I couldn't exclude pages or categories from my navbars.

I started sweating when I read this post right after upgrading my blog.

But I do have one category excluded in my top navigation and luckily it's still excluded. Maybe it depends on how you're excluding (I hard coded mine into the header.php file). Or some plugin incompatibility? Did you try deactivating your plugins to see if that made a difference?

I agree that if you're excluding pages and categories you may not want to upgrade, but I think it is a security upgrade so it's a tough call. Maybe I'll get brave and test it on another blog I have that exclude a number of pages. If I do, I'll let you know what happens.

Sorry to hear of your WP troubles, Rick. It's a real pain when something like that happens.

I just recently upgraded to 2.8.5 on a blog with excluded categories - and all is well. Categories are still excluded. But then again, like Linda, I hard coded the exclude into the header.php file.

I'm also using the free Flexibility2 theme (http://www.flexibilitytheme.com/download/) and it's weathered every recent upgrade with no hiccups.

I hard coded into the header.php file too. I didn't mess with my plugins becuse I wasn't using an exclude plugin. I don't know. I'm glad it worked for you.

I knew I should check here before doing anything. I upgraded to wordpress 2.8.5 and now I cannot preview my posts...it's driving me insane because I hate publishing my posts and then going back to fix what doesn't look good on the page.

Anyone else having this problem and know a solution? It just tells me post not found

I've upgraded mine, no issues with excluded pages or categories showing that shouldn't be.

Nelson: on your previewing posts issue... I've seen this issue posted on various forums. One of the most common solutions is to change your permalink structure, save - then reset the permalink structure to your original settings and save again.

See if that doesn't resolve it.

Traci: Thank you. Thank you. I tried that and it did the trick. Ah the wonders of technology. A save and restart here, a colon there and suddenly the world is bliss...otherwise a nightmare.

You're welcome! Glad you got it working. :)
