Most recommend using GoDaddy for buying a domain rather than their hosting company.
If you buy a domain from GoDaddy for $8, you still have to pay the $15 to transfer over to Hostgator
Otherwise just pay $15 for a domain on Hostgator.
Is there a reason to spend the extra $8 to use goaddy? (i've done both and it seems to take longer to transfer it over to Hostgator then just buy it from them to start)

I don't recall ever having to pay to change nameservers with GoDaddy. I just registered a domain name for a friend with GoDaddy ($11) and set up the hosting with hostgator ($66.00 for a year with coupon) and didn't pay a $.01 to transfer anything. I just changed the nameservers.

Yes, when you first set up your account, the first domain is free. Additional domains that need to be transfered is where the $15 comes into it.

christianwins - I think you're misunderstanding what Nelson is telling you. If your Registrar is Godaddy and your webhost is Hostgator you just go into your Godaddy admin and change your nameservers to hostgator. The domain stays with Godaddy.
BTW/ I register my domains at netfirms.com. First year price is $7.95 and $9.95 thereafter for .com. Also, domain privacy is free. You pay extra for this at most Registrars.
Nelson - Where can I find that Hostgator coupon? Thanks.

That makes sense, I was doing extra work for the process. Thanks Nelson and Rick.

I have heard quite a few people who were not happy with godaddy for various reasons.
I use namecheap.com or hostway.com -
Hostway is $7.95 per year:

namecheap is a bit more expensive but check their twitter page for coupons.

(The one for October is: getmecheaper ) You get domain privacy free with namecheap so go with them if you want that.

Only problems I've ever heard of or seen were user errors with godaddy ;) I always use godaddy or some are with a godaddy reseller account my friend has because she can set me with a discount and then all my accounts are hosted with hostgator. I've had incredible customer service with both.
One time godaddy was worried that my account had been comprised. They put a halt on any transactions and sent me an email and CALLED ME!

There is a reason you want to do this too.
Domain at one company, hosting at another.
If you ever get your hosting shut down for any reason, you can be back up and running quickly by simply uploading your backups (you do keep backups of your sights don't you??) to a new hosting account, changing the name servers to the new company and you are back in business very quickly.
It is part of risk management :)

I also buy my domains at GoDaddy and host at Hostgator.
I just go in and add on domains to the baby plan and then change the nameservers on godaddy. I do so many I keep the name servers in a text file for easy copy and paste into GoDaddys name server page.

Namecheap are quite good for buying domains. I've been with Godaddy for years and they are rather complicated to deal with - the purchase process is long and beset with cross sells!!
Their support is super though and their DNS servers are very fast. There's pros and cons about all companies...

I find GoDaddy rather fast, but I haven't tried other options. I just skip the upsell offers with the "No thanks, ready to checkout" link.
