ISPs in Australia have successfully (and vigorously) opposed these sorts of provisions on the basis that an ISP is a 'carrier' - a provider of a communications media. We've seen all sorts of proposed legislation and there's a big court case going on now between Sony and a few other large companies and an Australian ISP. They're trying to say the ISP which is about the 3rd largest in AU somehow encouraged downloading of copyright music. Crazy stuff.

I can understand the recording industry's issues but they've basically resorted to chasing and suing ISPs and trying to get legislation enacted because all of the DRM (copy protection) systems they've spent millions on have been cracked within hours.

The problem with DRM is that it's highly expensive to program, to implement and promises little results. The problem with so many music companies these days is that they do not realise that the people who're dling their stuff = people who can't afford to pay for it right now(high pricing, dirt poor people, or students) or who won't pay for it. And that those people took the easier way out as opposed to borrowing from a friend or library and so on. And that the numbers are magnified on a global scale 'cos of the sheer no. of people involved on a state and country basis. I guess this is a good marketing lesson for me: choose my markets and demographics wisely. :p

Yeah, trying to sell stuff to poor people is not a good idea! I hope the public can keep up pressure on governments to keep the Internet free. If the music industry has problems that's no reason for the rest of us to have our rights curtailed.
