TrueTwit Validation ??

[warning, rant about to ensue - much of it to the collective 'they' using TrueTwit]

Recently I began making an effort to find and follow more people on Twitter. I did so because I have never auto-followed anyone, and it had been awhile since I had gone in and purposely sought out new people to follow.

So I'm choosing new peeps to follow, I am not doing so to get them to follow me back (I don't receive any emails when new folks follow me, so I follow based on my own criteria, not just to blindly return a follow). I have been slammed with auto DMs from many of these new folks I followed requesting me to click their TrueTwit validation link. :eek:

First, I don't click links in DMs unless it's someone I know and I can tell they sent me the link personally, as in a request to view their site and we had discussed it before hand, or I asked them to send me a link, etc.. something like that.

But this DM just took the cake:


Hi! I know it's a pain but I'm interested in people, not bots. Please follow this link to validate your profile.

Say what?!! I chose to follow you, then you use a BOT to send me an auto DM telling me that you're not interested in bots. Good grief!

Twitter is NOT about forced mutual reciprocation. If I choose to receive what you are tweeting, that's my prerogative to do so. I will not click your TrueTwit validation link in order to get you to follow me in return. I didn't follow you to get you to follow me. I don't like bots either - especially those who send me unwanted DMs with links. :mad:

I had the same reaction as you Traci. Then I clicked "unfollow" and moved on. I think the true twit in this scenario is the person using this service to vet their followers. How about reading some tweets and making the decision to follow based on that person's value to you rather than whether or not they can prove their human-ness?

I'm unfollowing those folks. But it was the double-standard in that one DM that got me; using a bot to tell me they don't follow bots. LOL

I do not mind true twit validation and always click through. I signed up there so when I click I am verified. Mari Smith does not recommend it. I find that true twit users often times are famous folks. No big deal for me.
I just started to autofollow to save 30 minutes a day vetting new followers.
I also started to autofollow 300 people a day with socialtoo.
I am getting about the same rate of valuable followers as when I manually followed. It was about 10%.
I miss seeing my favorite tweeters so I need to start to use lists or friend feed.
I also may go to geekyfollow and unfollow everyone that never @ replies to people.

I use some auto tools myself - I had too, I'm too busy. But I still interact personally every day with my Twitter followers. I enjoy that. Imagine - The Quiet One enjoying chatting. :p

What I dislike about TruTwit is that it's:


An auto DM. If you only have a few followers, auto DMs might not be a big deal, when you have thousands, it's a huge deal. I have auto DMs disabled, but clearly when you follow someone on Twitter, they are able to send you DMs such as this and it get through that system.
It's impersonal. Like I quoted above, the one person didn't like bots, yet used one to tell me they didn't like bots. It's hypocritical.
TruTwit makes the assumption that if someone follows you, then you are supposed to follow them in return. I don't believe in that theory. I follow folks because they meet MY criteria and I want to receive their info and what they tweet about. Period. If they choose to follow me - great; but it's not pertinent to my following them. Thus the beauty of Twitter to be selective.

What would be tough for me is that I sometimes don't really know who I am so if you had to verify me...who would that be?

I understand why some people do use this but honestly, I look at the twitter stream--if people are engaging, etc. then decide on who to follow and who to not.

I just started experimenting with truetwit. I don't use it to replace personal interaction with people. I have seen that most people don't bother clicking the link so I might have to go back to using the old fashioned way (I hired an assistant to help with vetting my new followers).
