Question about PDF file

I have an article/document that I want to put in an email that I am going to send my customers. It is PDF file. I want to attach it to the email so that it can be downloaded and saved on their computer.

I will be attaching this to a welcome email that is automatically sent out when they subscribe.

Is anyone familiar with this?

Hi Brismom,

Attachments can cause issues with email deliverability rates and spam filters. It's best to include a download link intead, and host the PDF file on your server.

Upload the PDF file, and then link to it in the email.

How do you upload your site files & images?

You can upload through your cpanel under File Manager, or via FTP if that's what you normally use.

What I usually do is send the material in a zipped file and I haven't had any problems that way. I'm not a techie, so that's easier for me than uploading things to my site.

Like Lynn, I upload the pdf file to my site either through FTP--or in some instances I use my host's uploader thing, and provide a link for the people to download the item. For the very reasons she's mentioned.

Thank you for the replies. Where in the file manager do you actually put the file though?

I understand how to upload and all of that I am just not sure where in the file manager do I upload it to and how do I put the download link in the email. How do I know where to link it to?

I guess I am a bit confused?

I don't suggest using the file manager, but if you just have to:

1. navigate to your main folder ( usually public_html or httdocs )
2. within there, create a new folder, name it downloads or whatever you wish.
3. upload your pdf file into that folder.
4. in your email put something like this:

Hi, here is your download:
http://yourdomain.com/downloads/yourfile.pdf

Now, the person that gets the email will simply click on the link, then they will see the pdf file open in their browser or they will get a popup asking them what they want to do with it.

Another way is to zip up the pdf file and then upload the zip file to the downloads folder and put the link like this:
http://yourdomain.com/downloads/yourfile.zip

remember, whoever you are emailing this to will have to have a pdf viewer to be able to open and see the file. Most people do but some may not.

I tried to do this to allow people to access a pdf file from my site, but I can't get it to work. I'm using a WP theme on my site (Lifestyle).

I want it to work similar to what Lynn does HERE (http://www.clicknewz.com/2011/tip-and-download/) with the PLR Secrets link. Will someone please help me to understand how to do this. Thank you.

Thanks for that. However, not quite what I was asking. (I really need to learn to communicate more effectively)

I don't understand how to get the .pdf file uploaded and how to link to it from a post so that it then open the pdf file for the visitor.

Your link for the file is www.clicknewz.com/free/easyplr-nd.pdf. How do I get the file into a folder "free"? Using my FTP manager (mozilla) where do I put the pdf file?

I tried putting it into a file that I created called "downloads" under my public_html folder and then copied the url (using the feature in mozilla) and when I click on the link all that it gives me the 404 error.

Is that more clear what I'm asking?

Sure - create the folder within public_html, which it sounds like you already did.

Now upload the file TO that folder.

The file name is case sensitive, so make sure you link to it correctly:

yourdomain/downloads/filename.pdf (FileName.PDF - there's a difference)

I finally got it to work, but it wouldn't do it with the FTP. I had to go in using the File Manager under cPanel. But hey, either way. Thanks for you assistance.

Hmm - is your FTP set to transfer in ASCII or Binary? If ASCII/Text switch to Binary mode and it should upload fine. Glad you got it via File Manager, but this may help for future reference ;)

I never use FTP anymore if I can help it. With the cPanel updates now, it is so easy to just upload a zip file of everything you need and then extract it when you get there.

I send my free reports by pdf uploaded to my server to and then just put the download link in my emails. I don't think I have ever tried to add an attachment in aweber.

Whatever way works better for you. All the best.
