View Full Version : What do you use for FTP?

Lynn Terry

I am still using an FTP client I started using back in the 90's, then called Windows Commander, now called Total Commander. I need to know what everyone else is using & recommending so that I can create a simple FTP tutorial (unless someone wants to offer :)).

What FTP client are you using?

I'm glad you are doing a tutorial Lynn - this is a big problem for Newbies and it took me ages to learn how to do something I now do in a couple of seconds!

Filezilla is the first ftp that worked for me and is what I use now.

I use FileZilla as well. The price is right (free) and I find it pretty easy to use.

Thank you - that's what I was thinking!

Shannon... I sent you an email about Elite Membership. Did you get that? I'll get you upgraded here at the new forum ;)

I've been using CyberDuck for Mac. Works great, but has the One Window at a time kind of UI. I'm actually looking to get a "Paid" ftp program coz I'm afraid "CyberDuck" is going to spoil me and keep me stupid (FTP-stupid that is) because it is so easy, one could easily overthink it.

However, I'm still not yet comfortable with the technology now that I have more than just 2 or 3 blogs/sites I'm trying to maintain.

Lynn, You use Macs don't you?

I also use Cyberduck for Mac. I've tried a bunch, but keep coming back to the duck. It works great and it's free.

Shannon - I believe it was 2 weeks ago today. It may have been to an older address, or got caught in a spam filter.

Checking in to give my input re: FTP.

I also use FileZilla. And have been for about three years...well, not everyday three years, but whenever I need it.

It was suggested to me when I initially needed an FTP, and it has stuck.

I also like the cost (free).

Another vote for Filezilla. Though am sure "The Quiet One" will show up hawking FireFTP( a Fire Fox add-on, extension or whatever the proper term is obtainable from mozilla.com)

Yes, "The Quiet One" hawking in for FireFTP :P. It is a Firefox add on and it works beautifully for me.

I've used several FTP clients over the years, from paid (WS_FTP Pro) to other free clients (Smart FTP) and really like FireFTP.

That said, Filezilla is another popular FTP program and if I had to make another recommendation, that would be it. ;)

Funny you ask because until just recently thanks to Traci and some other fine friends I learned what FTP was LOL I don't currently use one, Kev and I just do it all via Host Gator and XSitePro does it automatically. I'm not even sure how to explain it all to him so I'll look forward to a tutorial:)

One more vote here for FileZilla. I've tried FireFTP, but can't get it to work.

So maybe a tutorial on FireFTP would be helpful. :)

Filezilla is fantastic and works with all kinds of browsers too. I can easily fin the doc on my hard drive and upload. Also I tie it in with notepadlight wchi alllows for easier editing and finding what I want in the text editor.
Here's a link to notetab light if you don't already have it >

I used to use SmartFTP when it was free. It's not longer free.

I now have both CoffeeCup FTP and FireFTP ....

and most of the time I still just use plain old Windows. (start -> network connections -> enter your ftp info, then drag and drop like you would between folders)

This has always been a thorny issue with me. On my old computer Win 2K PC, I used WS-FTP, but it wouldn't work on my new XP machine. I tried several of these programs, including Filezilla, but could not persuade them to connect. I think there can be issues with your online connection and, possibly, your OS configuration. I finally found one called Core FTP Lite that works well for me.

I love Filezilla, I just added it on my laptop too with no problems. I find it much faster and more reliable than uploading files through cpanel, which is how I used to do it.

I have a file that is a RAR file and I am not sure what to use to open it.Has anyone opened a file like this?

TraciKnoppe
August 12th, 2009, 09:20 PM
Yes, many zip programs can also open rar files,WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/getcurrpage.cgi?lang=en&page=prodpagewz) , or WinRAR (http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10007677.html); but there are others.

Check your zip extraction program to see if what file extensions you can association with the program, and see if RAR files are among the choices, if so - you're good to go.

I have ben resolutely resisting my friend's efforts to get to upgrade

I'm open to persuasion Diana - what's better about Core FTP - I haven't heard of it?

I had some unsolvable problems with FileZilla once and switched over to a program called gftp. It's a secure ftp client meaning that one's login credentials are passed to the ftp server securily by being encrypted such that if anyone intercepts the traffic from me to the server they won't be able tell what I am sending.

gftp is really good...I'd say even better than FileZilla for my purposes but I think it's only available under Linux :).

Oh, you mean like this FireFTP tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP6VFGAls28). ;)

I should have known that you would have done a FireFTP tutorial and am sure it is just as complete as your "Beginner to Blogger" course is. Off to check the BtoB course to see if it is covered there or if I will have to click the hyperlink in order to learn more about it(FireFTP)

Thanks Diana - I like the new version of filezilla less than the old one so I'll check out Core.

I've been using CuteFTP for probably 10 years now and love it. Many bonus things about it and like the fact I can connect to different FTP sites and upload simultaneously.

Cute FTP 8.3.2 can be downloaded free as well from cnet.com. I found it a little easier to use when I first started out. I do now use Filezilla as well though.
