If we send beginners off to learn everything they can about Internet marketing, there's a realistic chance they'll never do any of the above 5 steps.

Well I suppose there isn't one right answer, but I look at it this way.

In order to make money doing anything we need an audience. No audience equals no income.

What I see, from years of observing the webmaster world, and experiencing my own many stupid mistakes, is that it's really easy to get distracted from building an audience. The Net is a distraction machine!

Even if we stick just to work, there are still a million distractions. There's the classic, endlessly fiddling with our graphic design. Another classic, endlessly trying to calculate 12,000 different business plans and schemes.

And my personal favorite, why stick with HTML which can be learned in a weekend, when we could spend years being distracted by Perl??

On and on it goes, and the job of building an audience can easily get lost in the shuffle.

To me, Adsense provides a useful service, by giving us an income model we can install on our site in literally minutes. And then, if we're smart, we jump back in to building an audience.

Once we have our audience, then Adsense can be replaced with whatever other business model that is suitable for our topic.

If I only have 32 visitors a day, it probably doesn't matter too much if I'm using Adsense, or selling my own product. When I get to 3200 visitors a day, then maybe it does.
