A keyword is a very important instrument in improving your visibility online. If the keyword is not searched for a lot, then there is no use in the rest of the SEO. It is necessary to know your audience to choose the right keyword to market to them.
One tool that I find useful is inventory.overture.com. Most of the time this site is down, but it does give interesting results. It gives all the required data about the searches conducted for the site in the month requested and its consecutive months. The search list has not been updated in sometime but might be useful for old sites and keywords.

I have never heard of that one. I have used the free Wordtracker keyword research tool (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/) and it's been great for me. Simple and effective!

You should be very careful while selecting the keywords for your website and choose such keywords that are most suitable for describing your website. Sometimes, you might be very confident that the keywords that you have chosen for your website, describe it in the best possible manner. You should not go for uniquely different keywords because there is very little scope for the search relevancy to match those unique keywords, as a result of which your website will not feature in the search results at all. This is the reason why you should consider using those keyword phrases that are popularly searched by viewers.

I also used 'free Wordtracker keyword research tool' for finding the best keywords for my site. I can say that the keywords were chosen correctly as more visitors have started to come and the bounce rate lowered.

Keyword selection is not an easy job. When ever i have to research the keywords i do these things , First think what should i write to search my services or products. Make a list then compare that list from Google adword tool and now i am also using wordtracker, both are i think better then others.

Before selecting keywords you have to be very much clear about your abilities of SEO. Selection of keyword is not an issue , bring that keyword on first page is an issue. I prefer Google ad word tool for keyword selection.

Actually, I have found keywords that get anywhere from 3,000 - 7,000 searches per month are the best to market from. This would provide you very good results if you are in the #1 spot on Google for the keyword and a good number of keywords at this search rate have the least amount of competition leaving you the best opportunity to capitalize from.

The hardest part of doing keyword research to me is just doing it. I use the free Wordtracker tool also. I have been spending a lot of time lately studying the SEO process of my website and adding the keywords in at the right places is very important also.

When doing your keyword research, don’t focus your efforts on keywords with high total searches per month. The majority of keywords with large searches per month aren’t necessarily buyers. Longer-tail keywords, or more specific phrases, often get less searches, but have higher conversions because the consumer tends to be looking for exactly what they are going to buy.
