What I did wrong: I activated a theme from the "install themes" section under the appearance menu. I have been adding to the site directly thru the pages menu.

I now know I should have downloaded the theme to my computer, which I have done, and used filezilla to upload to the site.

My question is how do I get the info from the updated site online to the untouched theme on my computer without losing anything?

It shouldn't make any difference how you upload the theme. All your posts, pages, and comments should still appear. What are you seeing?

I haven't transfered anything yet. But what I am wondering is how to get the content from the website to the blank theme on my computer with out losing anything.

I have never used FTP before.

If you have a live blog then there is nothing you have to do to put the content into your new theme. WordPress maintains themes and contents in two completely separate systems, so when you change themes, all your content will be exactly where it needs to be, with all your pictures, text formatting, and links as you left them.

You don't have to use FTP (although you can) to install a new theme. All you have to do is use the them installer like you did, then click the button under the theme that says "activate".

If, by some chance, you get a broken theme (it happens) and your content doesn't show, then just go back to your dashboard and activate a different theme.

Thanks for the info. It's all very confusing at first.

I was hoping there was an easier way to add content to pages then the little window in the pages menu.

You can make that little window larger. Go to settings, the click writing, and change the number of lines from 10 to something more reasonable, like 40. :)
