Hi ... I was looking through my stats in cpanel for several sites I have ... and noticed some spammy sites with external links to my site .. I have not done any link building to these sites so I'm wondering how they get there ... what the purpose of them linking to my unrelated site is and how to get rid of them if I need to ?

thank you so much for any advice

hey.. you don't really need to get rid of the 'strange' external links pointing to your site as long as you don't link back to them. Since you don't have any control over other sites linking to your site, you won't be penalized by the search engines in this case.

It is strange, but it has happened to one of my sites as well. I was shocked to find 2 links from spammy link farms linking to my site.

I didnt know what to do, so I kinda ignored it!

Yeah ... I guess I was just worried it would have an effect on my site if they were spammy sites ... but I guess they say it isn't something we need to worry about ... : D ... unless someone says otherwise ... lol

Yeah it is not anything I have linked to .. it is linking to my site ..

Can a site get an outbound link from my site somehow even if I do not put it on my site ?
Aside from commenting ... but I am approving comments manually and never seen that url ...

If you run a vbulletin community forum just like this one where anyone can register and post for free, some spammers can try to post 'spammy' links to your site by creating new threads, forum signatures, or profile pages.

In other words, if you don't have a web 2.0 component in your site where the outbound links (created by your community members) are 'do-followed' and get indexed by the search engines, there's no way a site can get an *inbound* link from your site without you deliberately linking to them.

Yea if you have a community site and someone posts a "negative" link. it will be registered as an outbound link from your site
