I'm looking at authoring (yet another) review site.

For my Wordpress topic site, I use my real identity.

I know we have the option of using a pseudonym, and I like the idea of including a picture as well.

Now, I don't really want to use my picture for this.

Would it be improper, immoral or just downright wrong to use a picture from places like iStockPhoto or even Flikr Creative Commons for this?

No I don't think it's a problem at all. If you have old pictures of yourself that look different from what you look like currently, you could us that. You could also just use a logo instead.

I've used older, obscure photos of myself like Angie mentioned. The only problem with using a stock photo is that others may use it elsewhere. In the case that the same person sees both, they'll assume either association (with that other site) or "fraud".

I've faced the same dilemma. I bought some iStock photos of other people and used them as a profile pic, but it just didn't sit well with me. I took them down and resorted to no photo but continued with a pseudonym.

I'm using an old picture of myself, but I'm changing it to be a cartoonized picture of me. At least I think I am. Haven't seen the cartoon yet!

I think we're all in the funny papers, we just don't know it. :)

I have a couple of references for people that do the cartoon thing. I haven't used them but their work looks pretty good.

I'd be happy to PM them if you'd like.
