What is it you're trying to promote? You really want inbound links from the content area of relevant web pages, which is why blog posts (yours or guest posts on others) is such a great & easy way to get them.

going through the motions and I'm definitely not spinning my wheels...
I wish I could say 'rocking it and making lots of money' but that is definitely

I'm a former English teacher that would love to be able to work from home. I've always been involved in direct sales in some form or fashion, but my interest has turned to the net. I've gone the ezine and rewrite route, had several news articles published, and have a miscellaneous personal blog. I've also blogged for a realtor, not as easy as it looks. My friends are always asking me to teach them something. I figured I could use my teaching background in some way.
My desire is to help local business owners learn how a blog can benefit them. There are so many things that I need to learn. I read everything I can, but I need some "real" people time. All I can say is "HELP"!

I will look at that article about finding a niche. What did you mean by "That's in direct contrast to starting a long-term profitable online business that you'll enjoy running." By long term, do you mean a business that has inventory, clients, and billing and stuff like that?

No - I was referring to the difference between "making money online" and "starting an online business". A lot of people don't really see the difference at first... but there are a lot of ways to just make money on the internet.Quote:

wow! this was a long read with some great advice and tips. I have been doing various things online for approximately six years. It wasn't until almost 3 years ago when I started in the service business that I actually started to see a regular income come in.
I have still always longed to make a residual income every month from affiliate commissions. I have made a few hundred dollars over the years but not enough to consider myself a successful marketer.
I have recently finished reading "My 15K Experiment" written by a warrior, and "Profit 13 Ways" by Lee McIntyre. I am really encouraged for the first time in a long time. So I have decided to follow along and write/submit one article a day to see if I can make money as they did.
I have a bunch of reports I would like to get selling but am finding myself unable to market them all. So, following Lynn's advice of focusing on one thing and going from start to profit, I am going to concentrate my marketing efforts on my first book and worry about the other ones later.
If I can get this working, along with my part time VA work I get now, I should be able to achieve my goal of $3200 a month online.
That is the plan for 2010.
That's a great plan, Melanie. An info product is one source of revenue that you can build on. You'll have a list of buyers, an opportunity to make recommendations and/or an upsell, etc.
You can also weave affiliate marketing into your VA biz by recommending resources to your clients, and having guides and outlines for them. See: How to Create Passive Income (in a service-based business)
Thanks again Lynn for some great advice. I'm going now to read over your blog post and will see what I can get going on. I realized that in the few months that I have been away from this forum, my momentum and motivation haven't been quite as strong as when I was coming on here and participating with others on a regular basis.

I think its great you have this forum where newbies and veterans and people who are still in the experimental stage can get together, share ideas, do some brainstorming, all in the name of internet marketing and the like.
I am in the process of promoting some stuff but not until all other plans are ready. Right now, I feel like I am a sponge, reading, reading, reading, absorbing, gathering all sorts of info, learning from past mistakes, learning from other people's experiences, it's great! I am ready for MORE.

Learning is GREAT. I learn best by getting my hands dirty, so do a little testing and experimenting with the things you're learning as you go - it'll make a world of difference!

Just looking at the poll results. Its good to know that there are 75 making some progress. As for the 62 that are still spinning their wheels at the mo, keep going, determination , patience and hard work goes a long way.
I personally am doing rather well with my business. At least with my offline marketing. However, now I am looking to step it up and apply some of these internet marketing secrets that people have been telling me about.
In your opinion, what would be the best thing to do to get started marketing online?
Just wanted to post and update on my business. I had $80 in affiliate sales this month and my visitors doubled. My opt-ins are starting to really take off. The thing that has made all the difference is to be very clear on my market, know what the market wants, needs and is willing to pay for (surveys work great for this), have multiple revenue streams and stay on top of trends, knowledge base and always give more than what is paid for. That is very encouraging to hear. I'll be glad when my business is at that level. I know the steps I'm taking now will help it get there one day.
I have owned my business for 16 years. About 7 or 8 years ago I became very interested in the Internet. Four years ago I went from about 30% Internet based business/70% brick and mortar to the flip and now about 95% Internet based with 5% speaking on the platform.
It is a process and the ones who benefit are those who stick with it, hang out with those who are doing it, get mentors who have "been there, done that" and have a vision.
Hm, my business seems to be building slowly but steadily. Each year has tripled the previous year's gross profits (I just completed my third year in blog design), and I just had my best month ever.
Now I'm considering outsourcing some of the administrative tasks as they seem to be taking over, leaving me less time for the creative side, which is what I most enjoy and am best at.
I see all of these areas that I need to improve - copy writing, successfully marketing our few info products, creating more info products for more passive income, building our newsletter subscribers, building our affiliate list, providing training tools for our affiliates to help them earn more, having regularly scheduled blog posts and newsletters, and it goes on and on.
I've reached the conclusion that owning a business is like owning a home - the work is never completely done. So I'm trying to approach this from the standpoint of what change will benefit my business the most.
