SEO is constantly changing and evolving. It's best now to have more of an "organic" marketing strategy with a lot of "natural buzz" vs old school article marketing and backlinking. As an example, see this recent post:

You really want to focus more on building a readership (an audience), and building long-term assets, than on "increasing traffic" alone.


That basically means you should really focus on building up a responsive email list, a highly engaged social media following, build up your credibility and reputation across your niche, and work on engaging your site visitors or blog readers to take action when on your site (leave a comment, subscribe, become a client or customer, etc).

It's the only way to "Google-Proof" your business. That's exactly what you need to do. Do not depend on search traffic alone. Too many people have learned that the hard way, and really regretted it...
