Wix/Square-space/Wordpress

Recently I've been doing some research on pros and cons of using Internet mediums such as "Square-space" vs Wordpress for creating web sites... Wordpress is the most popular medium for blogs and web creation currently.

Considering long term cost as well as usability / flexibility / support / plug ins etc as well as search engine optimization ; rank/ self hosted servers etc .
What makes Wordpress the number 1 choice in online marketing / blogging & business creation over other mediums to beginners and vets alike ??

Any info across the board is appreciated!!

WordPress is the most popular platform, so you'll get more support and third party addons/help/etc. You can easily find people to outsource tasks to given it's mainstream. And since it's hosted on your own hosting account or server, you have complete control over it.

Hosted solutions are more limited, and have less outside support. They are also easy for Google to remove from their database - or penalize - given they all have a "footprint" (being on a single network, or having a word or string of code that identifies them as being "wix blogs" for example). Should one of those networks get taken over by spammers (usually thanks to a marketer suggesting it) you could get caught in the fall.

WordPress has also been around longer (more than a decade).

Self-hosted Wordpress (.org) hosted on your own hosting account - not Wordpress.com - has grown into a full-blow CMS (Content Management System). It's easy to unique-ify and extend to your specific needs, plus you can take the site with you to whichever host you like, unlike hosted solutions.

I like to build my WordPress sites on the Genesis framework and try to get my clients to do the same. Genesis framework sites are more secure, more SEO-friendly, less code-heavy (think load times) and are responsive out of the box. Responsiveness is important; Google factors mobile user experience into as a ranking signal.
