A few companies do not allow their name in Domain names or advertising.
Amazon and Aweber come to mind.

No, it's not anything new. Most companies don't allow the use of their trademarked names in domains. There's no way they could possibly purchase every possible combination of words, letters & domain extensions - and they shouldn't have to.
They don't often offer to purchase the domain though - I would take them up on that.
A C&D, or cease and desist letter, is designed to inform you that you must stop doing __ (fill in the blank) or face legal action. I would definitely take it seriously.

If they are willing to purchase the domains from you, I say go for it - you can end your potential legal troubles with them and make a few bucks in the process.
