Those are reasonable solutions to getting the domain name you want. Another option is to add a word .... such as Get, Buy, Discount, etc... depending on what your topic is.

I prefer adding another word as opposed to dashes, because it's hard to tell someone what your site is with dashes. Imagine saying "weight dash Loss dash Today.com"

I'd also be careful with numbers because you then have to somehow distinguish between "one" and "1".

I sometimes get the dashes to prevent someone else from getting it once I have the main one with no dashes. I agree with what Lina and Loretta said.

i think you should just think of a more unique domain name instead of just placing in hyphens. even large companies use domain names that are very different from their brand names.

Kcman, Everyone above has given you good advice. Before I knew better I had a domain with the hyphens and it is very hard to tell someone and they probably will not remember. But like Clay says it doesn't hurt to have them.

Whether or not to use hyphens really depends on your marketing plan in my opinion.

If this is a site in which you will be doing mostly offline advertising or posting ads and relying on people to remember what your domain name is, I would stay away from the hyphens.

If you are mostly relying on search engine traffic, then it doesn't matter. People are going to see your site in the SERP's and make a decision whether or not to click on your listing. They don't need to go into a browser and type in the URL. Same goes if you will be doing a lot of article marketing, video marketing, etc to drive traffic. They will just be clicking on your links, not typing in a URL.
