Hi Stephen,
I'm sorry if my video wasn't clear on how to get an API key and set that up. To get that you need to signup for a free account at WordPress.COM. Yes, I know it's weird that you have to go through the .COM version of WordPress, if you're using the .ORG version on your own hosting; but that's the way API process is setup.

Once you have signed up for a free account at WordPress.com, you can find your API key within your User Profile, which you will access here:


Then once you are on your User Profile page, you will see your API key at the top of the page, like this (obviously, I've blotted mine out, but where you see the black line, is where your API key would be located):


Just copy that key, then in your WordPress installation for your domain, click Plugins > Akismet Configuration > then paste in your key. Click 'Update Options' and that's it.

Edited to say: if you installed your WordPress through your own web host, such as through Fantastico, then you have the .ORG version. The .ORG version is the only one that works with your own domain and your own hosting.

Traci, Ok. . .I got WP through my host, but if I want to post a blog I have to sign in to WP and it goes to .com. I just tried to sign in to get my API and I wasn't there so had to register as a new person. I found an API, but will it work with the other account? This is why I left WP. It is so confusing. Blogger does not look as professional, but it sure is easier!

Is that .com on your domain name, or wordpress.com?

You should log in to your wordpress through a link like this:
yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/

So how does someone get to your blog? Through your domain?

If so, then it doesnt sound like you set it up through Fantastico, it sounds like you set it up at WordPress.com and then have your domain redirected to that... or something along those lines. I'm confused

Stephen: I know it's confusing, but if you installed WordPress through Fantastico on your web host, then you have the .ORG version of WordPress. You only get the API key at the .COM version - that's the only thing you need to do over there, you don't even need to get the blog, only a username at Wordpress.com = because you're just using the .com version to get the API key.

Then you would do all of your blog posting and everything else related to your blog over at http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin (<- which is where you go to log into your .ORG WordPRess install administration dashboard).

So, if you did not install WordPress via Fantastico over at your web host; then you do not have the .ORG version. Once you install the .ORG, then you would access the administration panel by going to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin (obviously insert your actual domain name in there ).

You're confused!! Imagine where I am! I don't think I originally set up the blog correctly. I did do it through fantastico, but somewhere I dropped the ball! People get to my blog through my site. Now I use Blogger because I never could get WP to do what I wanted. I have some files I am looking at now that were from my original WP download and I see I did not configure things. I have no idea where I am!

When I try going to mydomain.com/wp-admin it tells me there is no page found.

Look under your Fantastico icon in your hosting cpanel - if you have WordPress installed, it will indicate that. If you installed it in a folder/directory - then the path to your wp-admin would be something like this: http://yourdomain.com/foldername/wp-admin
