    Default buying a domain name

When purchasing a domain name what extras do you shell out the money for? I usually pay for the privacy. Is this necessary and are there other things I should add on?
    thanks

    Judi,
I no longer pay for the privacy. I did on a few but let them go. Not worth it for me but would be for those with pen names probably. It's best just to purchase domains from Go Daddy and nothing else. I haven't heard great things about their hosting or anything.

I get the domain name only. I get hosting from another provider -always.

As for privacy, I ONLY use private registration when working under a pen name or would like my identity to be private. It's best NOT to use it if possible.

    Go to Namecheap.com.

The privacy is free for one year.

Since I have started using Namecheap, I will NEVER buy another domain name from Godaddy. I've been much happier with Namecheap.

I have bought most of mine via Google Apps. It is $10 and includes privacy.

dynadot.com is the best to purchase a domain name.
It has reliable rates & excellent service.

You quoted me but I did not recommend Go Daddy for any of the above. I think it's best just to purchase a domain through them and no other services. Just wanted to clarify.

Godaddy is a poor host and not a good place to buy domain names either. It is simpler to buy at namecheap and privacy is free and you need nothing else for a standard site or blog.

The biggest complaint I have heard about GoDaddy as a hosting provider is that if there is ever a complaint their TOS [Terms of Service] state and they do apply this - they will suspend your site immediately and then attempt to resolve the issue. Meanwhile your site is down and you are forced to prove the complaint is groundless or get it resolved. Most other host providers will work with you to resolve issues before arbitrarily suspending your site and potentially causing many more complaints to say nothing of how much this could cost you in sales.

I keep hearing that complaint. But I had many sites there for years with no issues what so ever. I think it is rumour from several years ago when a well known and rather spammy marketer got shut down.

    Good job godaddy!

Google shuts down sites, many sites, every day!!

    :-)
