Beginner's Strategy

Do you begin a new niche with a model or business strategy? What I mean is, when you come up with an idea for a niche and have done your research and set up a site, do you already have in mind the how and when of posting blogs, developing reports, getting affiliates, product reviews, etc.? Is it good to have a business plan/strategy or am I making this more complicated than it needs to be?

I think it's good to have some sort of plan (ideas on what you want to do in the future) BUT I say get started and then do all that stuff as you go along.

When just starting out, you can fly by the seat of your pants and just get started. Just do it as Nike says.

Over time, setting your goals and planning how to accomplish them will be extremely important to your long term success.

The more goals you have to plan out, the more focused you will be in taking the right actions. How will you know you are succeeding if you haven't got goals and a plan to work from?

If you are serious about growing your business, a Business Plan should ultimately be implemented so you know you are working towards what you really want.

I agree with the above, getting started pronto is always a good thing but I think it helps if you have an idea of the direction you want to go in , as Angie says. Do you want to ultimately have a membership site, do you want to have affiliate site only, that type of thing.

And I also agree that having a business plan of some kind does help. You want to create a business after all and it helps if you view everything you do as a means to an end. Have a clear objective and some goals in mind so you can set targets and work toward them. Otherwise you might find yourself wandering aimlessly through cyber space not getting much done. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm finding that one of my biggest challenges (aside from knowing what to do) is allocating enough blocks of time to really make progress. A half hour here and there just doesn't cut it since I have to regroup everytime. I think I'm also drowning in to much information and, as you say wildblue, leading down too many rabbit trails.

I struggle for time as well, so I try and plan ahead - so if i have half an hour I will spend it coming up with article ideas and titles, then for my next half hour slot I can jump in and start writing without wasting time thinking about what to do.

Also remember checking stats, or finding where you rank on google for your keyword is not a good use of your time when it is very limited, (a trap I fall into)

Hi Robert,

There's definitely something to be said for having a business strategy, planning and preparing, but sometimes that stuff can drag you down. For instance you can get so caught up with preparing, researching and planning that you never take any action.

I'm with Angie, it's good to have a plan but you've also got to take action too. If you have an idea that you think is good, do some preliminary research to make sure it has potential and get it out there. Your reports, articles, making your site pretty and all that other stuff will just happen as you move along.

a plan or checklist that has no guesswork and step by step instructions alone will work, but its difficult to arrive at one in the beginning. it requires lot of homework and hard work...
