    Default website design

    Hello Forum Members-
I have a website that I purchased and was designed with WP and was customized from the Lifestyle theme. When I down loaded the site all there was in the zip file are folders Custom Theme,Graphics,Plugins, Index.php, setup guide but no htlm files to edit the code. I have a bunch of .php files. The website is http://www.4greentechenergy.com. I can go to view code and see the html code, is that the file i change and reload to the host or do I change the .php files. What I want to do is change the nav bar to add more categories to broaden my product lines. I have added plugins to get the results that I have now. I have never worked with .php files.
Hope this helps explain what I want to do, also if I can modify the code I would like to use this theme for other websites.

    Thanks

    Hi Terry,

WordPress is built on php, not html files. Basically, the php code constructs the html you see "on the fly" as you view each page, where a traditional website is build using static pages containing only html code. You *can* edit the php files if you like, but most changes will not require that level of geekiness.

Changing your nav bar is going to depend on how your menus are set up. Some themes use WP's menu builder (in your dashboard select "appearance" then "menus" from the options on the left), while some just use the "pages" or "categories" you've created in the back end.

The best place to learn to use WordPress is at wordpress.org. Here's a link to their getting started guide: http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_S...with_WordPress

Hope that helps you out some, and let us know if you have any more questions. Most of us use WordPress, so you'll find lots of assistance here.

Terry, The ease with that you can change the menus will depend on the theme. If the theme is using the new WordPress menus, it is easy to change. In the WordPress administration area, you go to the Appearance menu and pick Menus. In there, you can setup menus and sub-menus.

    Good luck!

You are using the Studio Press Lifestyle theme so you actually have two themes, the Genesis framework and then the Lifestyle child theme. It's best not to touch the Genesis files because when you update the Genesis theme, that will overwrite your changes. The child themes have a custom functions.php and a custom css file where you can feel free to make changes. Studio Press has a great support forum for customers. Since you are interested in using this theme for other websites, you will need to get your own license and that will give you access to the forum where you can get help customizing the theme.
