  1. Jonathan Fields says

    Hey Lynn,

I'll be going. Curious if they'll be exploring the burgeoning trend to blend IM tactics with more traditional blogging strategies to as a means to more effectively build lists, fuel conversation and drive conversion.

Look forward to seeing you there.

  2. Great - I look forward to seeing you there as well! This will be my first time attending BWE but I've heard great things about it.

  3. Dan Reinhold says

    Wow...it sounds overwhelming.

How does anyone really come away with anything without being fried to a crisp?

    And then there's the networking...

At least they're not selling attendee lists to their exhibitors like Affiliate Summit, according to Shoemoney.

  4. Most of these events do offer A LOT. The key is to have an objective, and to spend your trip achieving that objective. It might be to learn new things, just get out and enjoy a tax-deductible trip to Vegas *grin*, or you may be seeking something specific...

My decision to attend BWE includes all 3 πŸ˜€

  5. Jonathan Fields says

No doubt, the more valuable part of events like these is what goes on outside the lectures. It's all about the relationships. It's not so much about the knowledge, but the relationships.

I was at SXSW last year and spent very little time in the lectures, the real action and conversations were happening in the hallways, the bloghaus and the events at night.

  6. That's true. I dont usually attend "after parties" but do enjoy the groups that assemble and share ideas over dinner, etc. There is much to gain through those relationships.

I also enjoy the roundtables and panel discussions - much more than the keynotes or lectures. You can often learn some real gems, or get your questions answered directly.

But in addition to all that, I find industry events to be very energizing and motivating. I always come home feeling refreshed and ready to tackle new things. I love it!

  7. I badly, badly want to. Just have to see if my husband finally lands a job so that money isn't quite so tight. I finally hit the point where it looks like I can support us even without that (yay!), but that's new and I won't have money to spare unless things keep increasing or he starts working again.

But he all but has a job offer, as of today, so maybe...

  8. Congrats Stephanie - thats awesome!

I do hope you can swing it. I have a feeling its going to be a very high-energy event! You'd be surprised how much you can get out of trips like this.

Obvious tips, but worth saying: book your airline ticket early (and online) to get the lowest possible rate, and also consider rooming with 2-3 people you know. It makes the weekend more fun, and lowers the cost at the same time.

Definitely keep me posted - and good luck to your husband with the job offer! πŸ˜‰

  9. Stacie Bennett says

So wish I could afford to go to this!! It looks like an awesome event! Oh well, maybe next year, lol.

  10. Thanks for the link and information, Lynn.

I've yet to attend a convention of any sort (okay, there was that one Star Trek convention but I don't think it's "networking" if the people you talk to are dressed as Klingons), and have been thinking it'd be a fun excuse to take a trip.

I'm such an introvert at heart though that I don't know how much I'd get out of the networking. Still, I'm sure I'd learn something from the lectures or seminars or whatever they call 'em. πŸ˜‰

Just out of curiosity, how many women are at these things? (I've noticed a few more female IMers in the last few years, but it still seems pretty dominated by men! Of course, with blogging there may actually be more women out there.)

  11. LOL @ Klingons. I used to watch ST - years ago. Was also a big fan of X-files (planning to see the 2nd movie this summer πŸ™‚ )...

Anyway, yes - there are a lot of women at the events I've attended. And you're right. Just consider the entire BlogHer event & community - thousands of female bloggers. You would enjoy it πŸ˜‰

  12. Just had to say there's nothing like going to a Star Trek after party and seeing Klingons disco dancing. I believe that was at the last convention I went to.

And Lindsay, I'm pretty much an introvert too. But I've been trying to get to one of these events just to give the networking a try. Missed PostieCon in Vegas because of family obligations. Missed BlogHer because I didn't realize it was last weekend and in San Fransisco, which I had visited the weekend before!

Things are looking good for the job for my husband. Just have to be sure the benefits are adequate because the pay is not that special. But for now that seems to be what's available.

  13. Thanks for the heads up, Lynn. I would love to go to this conference. It will depend on how my Mom (99 yo) is doing later this summer; I just don't feel I can be away for any length of time unless it's absolutely necessary.

Conventions are a fabulous networking opportunity! Two years ago at Ed Dale and Frank Kern's Underachiever Conference in San Diego, I met a great group of women and from that grew an online Mastermind Group that still exists today.

It would be fabulous to meet both you and Jonathan Fields (two of my blogging "idols") in person. Fingers crossed I can be there.

  14. @Stephanie Its funny you mentioned "missing" the BlogHer event because you didnt realize when/where it was. I'm subscribed to their mailing list, and active on Twitter... so it seems like I should have received some obvious news on that myself. Hmm. I should double-check my subscriptions with them...

  15. Linda - I'm curious what you thought of the Underachiever event? It sounds like you got a lot out of it!

It would be great to meet you in September if you decide to go. Keep us posted πŸ™‚

  16. Double thumbs up for the Thirty Day Challenge!!!! It's what first got me into this wonderful IM/blogging world. Ed Dale has an incredible gift for teaching and making the process fun.

Are you going to join in this year? I am going to follow along, but don't think I can start a new niche this summer -- I will apply what he's teaching to my existing niches where possible. I wish I could fully participate, but there is just too much on my plate at the moment. (Plus my son goes off to college mid-August too.)

  17. I am planning to try to join in this year and review it personally. This is my referral link for anyone interested (and no I dont earn money if you join - its a free program πŸ™‚ ):
    http://www.ThirtyDayChallenge.com/challenge/24627

    Hopefully I'll see you there!

  18. Hi Lynn,

I'm sure you'll "see" me on the Forums once it gets underway. My Forum name last year was LindyLinda and I'll probably keep it for this year too -- lindy hop dancing is one of my passions.

I'll definitely be interested in your review of the experience! See you 8/1 if not sooner!

  19. I'll be there!

  20. Excellent Patrick - I just ordered your book on Amazon at the recommendation of @ChrisBrogan πŸ™‚ I look forward to meeting you in September!

  21. Thanks so much. πŸ™‚ I really appreciate it. I sent you an e-mail! πŸ˜‰

    Thanks again,

    Patrick

  22. Be sure to stop by my booth and say hello! Don't forget to listen in to Blog World Expo Radio. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/blogworldexpo

  23. Thank you Jim - appreciate the link πŸ˜‰

@Patrick - found your email and will reply to you there. Thank you!

  24. I just tweeted this too, but I figured I'd let you know I registered for BlogWorld at last (through the link here, of course!). DH found out from his new job that yes he could have that weekend off, so he's tagging along. He's not sure if he wants an exhibit hall pass or to just go play, so I told him to tell me ASAP.

  25. Excellent Stephanie - I look forward to seeing you there! FYI I just found a coupon code to save 20% when registering for BWE (sorry if this is too late for you!): "TWVIP" If you use that when you register, the full conference is only $240 instead of $300.

  26. I have my trip booked. Coming in Friday, leaving out Monday. I'm staying at the Marriott. Choice was between Marriott & Hilton, but Marriott is closer (convenience!) and offers complimentary wi-fi. Hilton usually charges $15-20/day for internet access.

I look forward to meeting some of you there!

  27. Yeah, I saw BlogWorld tweet that after I bought. Pretty much wanted to pound my head on the desk at that point. Timing is everything!

My husband and I are driving, as it's about a 5 hour drive from here. Gives us a little more freedom as to time and such. Leaving Friday after he gets off work, returning home Sunday evening because he works Monday and of course my daughter has school.

Fun part's going to be doing this while about 5 months pregnant at that point. At least I won't be too huge. I can't imagine trying to attend something like this around 7 or 8 months, at least not locally.

  28. Oh boy - yeah, me either!

Driving sounds ideal since you're that close. I am driving to the Atlanta conference next week because its only about 3 hours from me - and I really enjoy that drive to & from, great time to do some thinking πŸ™‚

  29. would love to go but it's not in the budget this time. maybe next....

  30. Shama Hyder says

    Hey Lynn,

    I'll be speaking there!

I look forward to meeting you in person.

    Cheers,
    Shama

  31. Great blog, Shama - I look forward to reading more and meeting you in Vegas! πŸ˜‰

  32. Does anyone know if they offer audio of the conferences at blogworld after the weekend so we can relisten to all the info again or if we can't be in two sessions at the same time?

  33. Hey there,

Anyone going to be at gnomedex in Seattle this week?

  34. I'm not sure Johnny - great question, though! You can find @blogworld on Twitter and ask them: http://twitter.com/blogworld

Let us know if you get an answer πŸ˜‰
