A quick update on the 10-part SEO Series that I mentioned last month... Paul has now published Part 2 in this series, focusing on PageRank and how it works.
In this post he explains ranking criteria between two similar websites. All things being equal (relevant, quality content etc) between two competing sites, the one with the higher PageRank or "popularity score" will rank above the other in the search results. PageRank basically being "a measure of how popular Google perceives the popularity / authority / quality / credibility of a web page."
Of course, no matter what you do to your web page, you cant personally affect your PageRank. It is determined largely by the people that link to you, how they link to you, and the quality and relevance of those links. This means that your primary goal should be to create a "linkable site".
