Just How Shocking Is The Shocking Video?

John Reese released his "controversial shocking video" this week. It's almost an hour long (just over 55 minutes) and starts out with a confession from John himself that he has been misleading people about the best ways to make money online...

Not only that, but that almost every mentor or "guru" has misled people about how to start a successful online business.

The one piece of advice you'll hear most often is to explore niches outside of the "make money online" market and not to jump headfirst into an Internet Marketing niche. In his video, John Reese says that is wrong and that you should get involved selling Internet Marketing products to people who want to make money online (even if you're a complete newbie at it yourself)...

You can watch the video yourself at this link:
http://www.income.com/shockingvideo.html

John "shatters 10 huge myths" that have been used to mislead convince people not to focus on the Internet Marketing niche:

Myth #1 You have no business selling "make money online" products if you've never actually made money online yourself.

Myth #2 The Internet Marketing niche really isnt that big, and there's already too much competition.

Myth #3 You'll never be able to compete with the top marketers like [insert Gurt], [insert Gurt], [insert Gurt].

Myth #4 You cant make much money in the Internet Marketing market because its so hard to become recognized as an expert.

Myth #5 You cant make much money in that niche unless you have a massive opt-in email list like the "gurus."

Myth #6 Its too expensive to buy "internet marketing" or "make money" traffic.

Myth #7 You wont make much money unless you are able to do JVs with the big-name marketers, and its nearly impossible because its a private "club."

Myth #8 Its too late to build a business in the Internet Marketing market because others have a 5-year or more headstart on me.

Myth #9 I cant be successful in that market because I'm not a techie that knows HTML, Flash, and other programming languages.

Myth #10 Its stupid to try and make money from Internet Marketing information because everything can be found online for free.

Following the explanation of each of those "myths", John goes into why the IM niche is the best market in the world, and the best opportunity online - even for complete newbies. In fact, he gave 7 compelling facts to back that up that I honestly couldnt disagree with.

He follows up with an example of how he earned $940,000 by promoting an affiliate program to a small list, sending 4 or 5 emails. He also shared that he continues to earn residual income from that promotion with checks in the amount of $30k+ each.

Its facts like those that cause such a stir in the Internet Marketing niche. Is that level of success going to happen to everyone? No. John carefully states that its a rare and extreme example. However, the thing to note is that it did happen.

Having followed John Reese for several years, since he was selling an eBay course on VHS tapes even, I would venture to guess that this commission was earned promoting StomperNet to his mailing list of high-ticket buyers (those who purchased John's Traffic Secrets course for $997).

Most "newbies" would be lucky to earn $9.40 promoting an affiliate program to their own small list. Most of those same people would jump for joy if they earned $940.00 in affiliate commission.

Hearing a story like John Reese's $940,000 in earnings generally gets one of two reactions from these people (and we know this because they post it all over the forums): they either get completely and utterly discouraged - and eventually quit, or they form immediate negative opinions of the 'Guru' calling them a liar or a scammer or even just calling them "lucky".

There are always a rare few who actually find these success stories inspiring. That look at John Reese and realize he's just a plain old 30-something guy that worked endless hours to get in the position to make that happen. And that there is nothing extraordinary about John Reese that makes it possible for him... and not them.

John says it himself in the video: "Anyone can be successful running a business in the Internet Marketing niche." Not only that but that you can get started quickly and easily, and that success can happy relatively fast.

During the video John coins a new acronym: IMA, which stands for Internet Marketing Advisor, and the point of the video is to teach you how to become one.

I actually love the term. My first thought was how well that defines ME. I've never liked the word Guru. And I've never claimed to be an "expert".

If I have to call it all, I usually call it 'training' or 'consulting'. But Advisor, well that suits me pretty well. Maybe not exactly by John's definition, as I do have fresh creative ideas of my own that I share frequently, but I like the title nonetheless.

In fact, I think I'll just start using it: Lynn Terry, Internet Marketing Advisor. What do you think? 😉

Back to the video, John comes back around to why most people fail in the Internet Marketing niche - and why some people never earn more than $9.40 at a time, while others (like himself) can earn $940k with seemingly little effort.

You'll have to watch the video for yourself to tune in to all of the interesting points that John makes, but you can easily let it play in the background and just listen in while you go about your work.

As I mentioned, the main point is to encourage you to register for a new online class that John Reese is offering - a class that teaches you "how to become an IMA". You have 24 hours left to register, so be sure to get in while you can if you think this will interest you.

Here's the link to get on the notification list for the class:
http://www.income.com/imalist.html

FYI - the class is not free, and it is held online (webinar style). It will be a 3-day class held at the end of this month (January), and registration for the online class starts tomorrow - Thursday 1/24 at Noon EST.

Personally, I thought the video was great. I know there are a lot of people that really want to break into the Internet Marketing niche, so maybe its about time a 'Guru' stepped up and offered to teach them how to do it successfully.

What about you? Does the whole idea shock you - or did you find the video "shocking" or "controversial"? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Best,
Internet Marketing Advisor

  1. I too like the Internet Marketing Advisor title. I also dislike the term "guru" and shy away from presenting myself as an expert. And I love the saying "the truly educated never graduate. "

    🙂

  2. I couldn't agree more you with and John. Even if you have not seen a great deal of success with making money online, if you've spent any time on any forums, bought any ebooks, set up a website or autoresponder, you already know more than most people about how to make money online, in any niche.

I love the "Internet Marketing Advisor" term. Pretty much sums everything up that any of us do online.

I've been rethinking my online approach over the last couple of months and now see lots of possibilities that I can begin to take advantage of.

Thanks for talking about this, Lynn. Now all of us just need to get off our rear ends and do something and remember to never let anyone tell us what we can or can't do. We are masters of our own destiny!

I love your new title - 'Lynn Terry - internet marketing advisor'. I did watch the video. For me, I am happy building my affiliate sites - sites which sell products not related to internet marketing. I dont understand how someone can start preaching until you make heaps of money from what you are preaching...May be I am missing something here...

    Sandy

  4. Thanks for sharing. I am going to have to watch the video!

  5. Jeff Jones says

    Great post, Lynn.

I'll watch the video but I'm pretty sure the class will be excellent but pricey.

    Jeff

  6. I feel that way too, Sandy - I suppose its a personal thing. As you know, I test things myself first and then share my findings as I go. Or at the very least I am very clear on the fact that I havent tried or read a particular product myself.

I dont encourage people to just randomly promote anything and everything. But after reviewing John's video, I dont think he is going to encourage that either.

There are no details at all about the course yet - the price, whether there will be an affiliate program, etc - but if I had to guess I'd agree with you Jeff. I dont imagine it will be cheap.

    Hi Lynn,

This was a great post. It's another example about how there is so much misinformation in internet marketing.

Coincidently, I was referred to this blog by James Brausch.

I think John Reese and Brausch are one of only a handful of gurus (oops, Internet Marketing Advisors 😉 ) that we can trust.

    Thanks,

    Bob

  8. Oh no, Lynn. I see you are the latest victim of James Brausch's commenting team. Be prepared for many more comments from various personas telling you how what you say reminds them of James Brausch yada yada yada.

Sorry to take your post off-topic, but I'm just shaking my head at this tactic that he's been using at my blog for months and now I'm uncovering other blogs where it's going on too. 🙁

  9. Hi Alice! Thanks for sharing this with me. To be honest, the comment did strike me as odd, but without a reference I wasnt sure the purpose of it. I'll have to look into this more and figure out what's going on.

I read your blog post on the topic, by the way - great post!

  10. Duane Ford says

I like the ring of that!
Lynn Terry, Internet Marketing Advisor - or like a Dr or CPA just Lynn Terry, IMA. (That looks more intimidating)

I don't have time to watch the video right now but...I'll be back.

    Duane

P.S. In my telemarketing (ugh) days, people would ask me if I was a "Phone Pro" which was a self-assumed title some of the telemarketers who thought they were the best used. I always said no, I was just a dialer. If anyone asked me if I was good I'd say, "Good as the best and better than the rest!" 🙂

  11. Nell Taliercio says

I'm curious why it is that most guru's tell you to stay out of the IM niche? Is it purely selfish reasons, because they're fearful you'll be their competition or is it that they truly think it'll be easier for you in another niche? Thoughts?

I like the name IMA - I think it suits you well. I really don't like the name "guru" and wouldn't want that label slapped on me either.

And just for a side note, I've been in the work at home jobs niche for awhile, but also have work at home business information via a content site and newsletter and I always make more money and make it easier with the business site...versus my telecommuting niche.

Not that everyone will have the same experience, but maybe John is really onto something here 😉

If it didn't cost an arm and a leg I would have joined his teleclass. I really like John and his products and I'm sure he'll over deliver with this one like he does with his other stuff.

  12. Well, I have a confession to make - I still lacked the last 10 or so minutes of the video when I published this post, and got a chance to listen to the last of it this morning while I was working... so I just now saw the price tag of $2,495 for the 3-day IMA class.

Worth it, no doubt. I'm on the fence about investing the time & money due to my current schedule, but am putting some serious consideration into it.

I’m curious why it is that most guru’s tell you to stay out of the IM niche? Is it purely selfish reasons, because they’re fearful you’ll be their competition or is it that they truly think it’ll be easier for you in another niche? Thoughts?

My thoughts are that there are a large number that jump into it feet first and "fail" at it and so that is the reason that seasoned marketers try to advise that they get their feet wet with the skills and strategies in a niche they are more knowledgeable about or personally interested in first. It makes it TONS easier. And with that experience under your belt, you can then venture into the "help others do the same" mode.

But without any experience at all, let alone success of your own, you have nothing to back up your recommendations - and that is often very transparent. Transparent to the point of dooming their success at it.

    My 2c

  13. Alice Seba says

Yeah, I don't know what's going on Lynn, but it has ended in me needing to put "Brausch" on my comment blacklist. It was getting completely out of hand.

  14. I think my biggest problem with just about any "guru" selling money-making products without doing it themselves is the lack of trust. If they started their business selling "how to make money selling online" but never actually did it themselves, I have big, big issues with that. Granted it IS one of the most lucrative markets out there, and YES your biggest money making potential is by selling business information.

However, I put a lot more faith into someone that I know has made a go of "normal" businesses that sell actual products and services (no matter if it's with affiliate products or their own). Especially if they are selling materials that teach "how to sell anything online". I like to see what they've accomplished first before I believe they know what they are preaching.

  15. Hi Lynn,

Interesting post-I have always wondered too why folks would say don't enter the Internet Marketing arena. But both Nell and Lynn makes some valid points. However, my thinking is that it would be impossible for that niche to be saturated and it keeps things competitive. The video was somewhat surprising which had my attention-price tag for me is WHOA!

    Thanks,
    Maurice

p.s. What is Alice Seba talking about?

  16. Great points, Kara. And maybe now is a good time to repeat a bit about my own history (for those that are new to my sites)...

I started out in a service-based business and managed an international web team. I personally did web development, small business consulting, marketing plans, and related services for local businesses - prior to offering my services online. I also did on-site computer training, was a Professional Advisor for Intuit and worked directly with small and home-based businesses, and partnered in 2 wholesale companies to PowerSeller status.

I'm starting my 12th year in business, and have only been in "Internet Marketing" and working as an affiliate marketer in this industry for the last few years.

  17. p.s. What is Alice Seba talking about?

She was referring to the comment right above hers. It was off topic, but apparently there is a rash of similar comments across the blogosphere.

  18. Do you mean false-hyping a person, product, or event just to create a buzz?

  19. Yes, in that case a person - though I'm not entirely sure what their objective is. I'm going by Alice's experience of course as it was a first here on ClickNewz.

  20. Nell Taliercio says

I agree with Kara about wanting to buy a product created by someone who knows what they're doing.

But, if I'm searching google.com for information about starting an ebay business, land on your website, which has great reviews about ebay products, and your affiliate link then I don't see anything wrong with that.

If you're an affiliate marketer and you're simply providing content and recommendations then I don't think that is rocket science nor do you need to be an expert.

However, if you do want to make your own product then I would only buy from someone I know is (or believe to be) successful and someone I trust.

  21. Russell Savige says

James Brausch is an egotistical farkwit. He claims to be a man of God of all things, but survives on spammy tactics that do seem to work.

  22. The most shocking part was the price for the class.

  23. Lawn Chair Millionaire says

The video has brought out the intricacies a person should know in online money making. If you wanna make it big , just keep trying mate.Faith is the key word and hope shall carry you through adverse times.

  24. Faith and hope are great, when mixed with a persistent investment of time & energy 😀

  25. Making you richer review - top affiliate program resource says

Hey Lynn, you wrote, “In fact, I think I’ll just start using it: Lynn Terry, Internet Marketing Advisor. What do you think?” Well why not after all you eminently qualified baby. So go ahead and use… 🙂

I am one of those who really love this guy called John Reese and utterly believe him. I like the fact that he thinks outside the box and share incredibly profitable tactics free of charge.

The “shocking video” was not much of shock to me because it revealed that IM is profitable, but because he further laden his claim by shattering the myths we’ve been fed all along by the same people who are secretly makes money from IM niches. 🙁

I’d watched part of the video and felt I’ve seen all because it’s so enchanting. But I will go watch everything once again and some more. Thanks for sharing Lynn – I mean Lynn the Internet Marketing ADVISOR! 🙂

  26. Everet West says

It's quite clear that John is subtly encouraging the disillusioned to stick with the so-called Internet Marketing Niche. A quick search on google will reveal that IM is no longer a niche. He is right though, money can still be made from it. It's just a little bit more difficult with the increased competition.

  27. Mary Gallagher says

Great discussion. I was directed here by another 'guru' Mark Joyner, through his Blogging course. I'm slow on the draw, but quick to see the real thing. Thanks, Lynn, for being the real thing, an IMA! I like that term too and really enjoyed John Reese's video.

I am passionate about learning Internet Marketing and have been painstakingly moving in the direction of setting up a viable business model that can work in my life well. As I come to see the AHA's of each step as I take action, it feels good.

This is one of those AHA's -I do have resources to offer the Internet Marketing Community, even if I'm not interested in becoming a guru. It's a matter of uncovering those things and packaging them in a way to assist others to find their path to success, a niche within a niche. Sound right to others here?
    Best,
    Mary

  28. Thanks for your opinion about the video.

  29. Jeff Paul Internet Millions says

Great post! I just started using internet marketing to promote my friend’s and mine websites. I am always looking for ways to increase and generate traffic. Looking forward for more posts from you.
