As soon you start changing (developing a healthy, supportive inner belief system, etc.) you ALSO start to change your circumstances!

One of the most important lessons that I teach my children is that as soon as they blame something else they give up the power to change the situation.
Such a great point, Katherine. I had never looked at it quite that way, but you're right.
Impressive.. short quotation but the whole point was there.. changes for good can make you a better person and successful at the end..

I kind of think that blaming gives up the choice to change your mindset, to then change the situation
...similar to Albert E's thought on...and I'm paraphrasing...'The same attitude that created a problem has to be changed to solve the problem'

I teach my kids you are 100% responsible for your own life, actions and success. We also live by E+R=O (event+response=outcome).
That is why "Best Reflections". Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Creating your own best reflection is the best way to maintain personal responsibility.

I couldn't agree more...in fact, I just wrote a post about this myself.
We tend to blame the world for our problems instead of reflecting on ourselves.
Take responsibility for your own actions and everything will fall into place with determination.
Taking personal responsibility for your current situation or circumstance is EMPOWERING!
Here's a great lesson that I put my students through. On the left side of a piece of paper write out all the reasons why you are not currently experiencing the level of success that you deserve.
Answers will often be, lack of time, too tired, poor genetics, under-active thyroid, I've tried everything and nothing works, eating healthy costs too much, my family eats junk and I can't keep it out of the house, I can't afford a gym membership...
The next step that I ask them to do is to write on the right hand side of the page what they are going to do about it!
All of a sudden they have control. It's within their power to make a positive change.
We are faced with hundreds of choices each and every day. We can choose to give into our self imposed limitations or we can choose to belief that absolutely nothing will get in the way of our success.
I choose the later.

To the commenter at the top of the list: the assumption that liberals don't take personal responsibility is a ridiculous characterization and generalization.
Personally, I wish some conservatives would take responsibility as well--in both personal and public issues--and avoid outright lying regarding topics like the Iraq war. But that isn't to say that all conservatives are liars and that all conservatives don't take personal responsibility. There are good and bad on both sides of the liberal/conservative divide and the lines are blurred between the two ideologies.
Thank you so much for posting this. I wish more people understood this concept. You can't get anywhere being a victim all your life, but a lot of people try. That's why I love coaching, my clients are ready to take personal responsibility!
