Do You Use An Online Data Backup Service?

It's been awhile since we discussed the backup topic (here, at least) but it's worth revisiting. Especially given my recent computer problems...

Which brings me to ask:

Are you currently using an online data backup service??

What would you do if your computer crashed right now. As in, while you're sitting there reading this. Your screen goes black. Or maybe blue. Or maybe it gives you some gobbledy-gook message in code that makes absolutely no sense. And then boom. Everything is gone and you can't get back to your data.

Do you feel the panic rising? Do you feel the color draining from your face? Just thinking about it is enough to make me physically ill. Have you ever experienced that fear - that realization that you just LOST everything?

Maybe you use something besides an online data backup service. An external hard drive, perhaps. Or maybe you're burning copies to a disc (still?).

Whatever the case, I hope it's automated and doesn't depend on you remembering to do it - or taking the time to do it manually every single day. And I hope you're storing your data backup off-site.

As you probably know (because I mention it a lot!) I use Mozy - and have been using them for almost 4 years now. And I *love* it. Mozy is an online data backup service, and while there are a few others out there like it I chose Mozy and have stuck with them from the beginning.

It backs up my computer (all of the files I specifically asked it to) every single night like clockwork. I never have to even think about it (remember to do it) or worry over it. It just backs up quietly while I'm sleeping.

But the true test in any online backup data service is not in the backing up... it's in the restore. I've been in the unfortunate situation of needing to restore my priceless files (you know, photos of my dog! πŸ˜€ ) more than once. Half a dozen times now at least, actually. Stuff happens.

Once I simply wanted to move all my data over to a laptop. Bam - click of a button and it was done. Nice! In other situations it's been the complete horror of a full-on system failure. Luckily I just replaced the tower and restored my files from Mozy, and was right back where I left off. Whew!

Why Online Data Backup Service - Or At Least Off Site

What if your home or office burned to the ground?

Or got flooded? Or blew away in a hurricane?

Enough said.

(All your on-site external hard drives or CD's would go with it...)

As for me, I could pick up a laptop (and a new tube of lip gloss) at Wal-Mart, get a hotel room with wi-fi, call in some take-out, restore my files to the new laptop... and be back in business the same day. Life and business must go on. Especially if I'm going to need to buy a new house!

I mentioned recent computer issues. It was a nasty blue screen. Then a black screen. Then nothing. And actually that was the new computer - that replaced the one that just "crashed" on me the week before. I didn't take a hammer to it, or throw it out the window. I didn't even break a sweat. I simply fixed the problem and then restored my files from Mozy. Nothing lost. No problem.

Could you say the same if that happened to you... right now??

Cool New Features at Mozy

The reason I brought this topic back up is because I was reading some emails from Mozy about their newest features - and wanted to share those with you. One in particular that is super cool in my book! Or actually, in my iPad...

They are in the process of beta testing an Android app, but for now the big news is that their mobile app for Apple iOS is out of beta. Mozy customers can now download, view, and access their backed up files securely from their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad!

That... is awesome. πŸ˜€

It means I can grab a photo or a document from my desktop system while I'm out & about on my iPad. Or on the other side of the world, even. Wow. No more fiddling with multiple programs like DropBox or GoToMyPC or whatever. (Using DropBox would assume I actually dropped the file into the box before I left the house - which, with me, is a BIG assumption. LOL)

They've just made my life that much easier!

(Simple is good. Very good.)

Here are the current rates at Mozy:

50 GB for $5.99 per month (includes backup for 1 computer)
125 GB for $9.99 per month (includes backup for up to 3 computers)

You may add additional computers (up to 5 in total) or 20 GB increments of storage to either of the plans, each for a monthly cost of $2.00.

I'm paying $5.99.

You can't beat that for the peace of mind alone, and as I call it: "data insurance". I honestly don't know what I would have done without Mozy during those times when my computer held my data for ransom...

And on top of that, now, no more dragging files into iTunes or dropping them into a box or paying for another service... I can easily access any file any time from my iPad. That just made my day!!

- - - - - - - - - -

Look, if you're not backing up - shame on you. And if you're not storing your backups off-site or at an online data backup service... I'll just assume your files are not all that important to you. Now is the time to do something about it. Not after your computer crashes - which is when most people do (waaaay too late).

Just something to think about... πŸ˜‰

Best,

p.s. I use the MozyHome package, and it's been all I've needed. Way more than I need even. If you aren't using an online data backup service already - or aren't in love with the one you're using - check out Mozy and "insure" your data today!

I make peanuts as an affiliate for Mozy since they're so ridiculously inexpensive, but hey - every peanut counts! I really appreciate when you use the links here at ClickNewz. It makes the blog go 'round. A big thank you!!

  1. I jumped on Mozy after I heard you mention it on Internet Marketing This Week. I recently started to switch to iDrive because it would have been less expensive, but didn't like the way it worked as well. Also, I love the Mozy app for iPhone because I can view all of my photos that are backed up at Mozy, as if they were on my phone. Really cool.

  2. Erica Cosminsky says

I have an incredible amount of space used because I keep a back up of all the audio files we transcribe in my office. I started having issues with Mozy after I got over 50 GB. That was back when they had the unlimited plan but it would never backup more than 50 GB.

I moved to Crashplan, partially because all my data wasn't backing up and partially because I moved to Linux on my desktop. I was tired of rebooting into Windows to let Mozy backup my computer. Crashplan has fantastic customer service and there rates are lower than Mozy now that they are using the restricted model. I have over 150 GBs backed up.

    • I never had any issues with the backing up over the 50GB mark at Mozy. But that's a good point for those that use Linux for desktop. Not sure many online backup services support Linux outside of crashplan anyway.

I've been using CrashPlan unlimited plan since March 1st and I'm happy with all their features so far. I like their seeded backup option. NOT cheap but helpful to get a quick backup loaded to their site and saving LONG initial upload time.

  3. Hey Lynn!

Has it REALLY been 4 years since I told ya about Mozy? Damn ... How time flies! LOL

As much as I have liked using Mozy these past years, I got a bit aggravated with the way they did their changeover to the restricted model. All of a sudden I was gonna have to go from paying $60/yr to almost $300/yr. for what I needed.

I'm not one to usually change things if things are working fine but someone recommended CrashPlan to me around that time, so I checked them out. I liked what I saw so I migrated over to them instead of staying with Mozy. They had some other features that Mozy lacked at the time.

Having said this, I need to say that this isn't a slam against Mozy. I have NO complaints about their backup service. Worked great over these past 4 years and was glad they were around to use. I'd have no issues with giving them a good reference if anyone asks me about them.

But like you've pointed out in your post, people need to have some sort of "offsite" backup plan for all their "goodies". An online backup plan is one step to getting that accomplished. Just pick one.

I still do local backups to my external drives that I swap out a couple times a week to an offsite storage site (bank safe deposit boxes). Helps keep my paranoia level down. heh heh

    Have Fun!

    Rick Wilson aka CorpRebel 😎

    • Time DOES fly! πŸ˜‰ And what in the world are you backing up - your unborn children?!? LOL I am still only paying $5.99/mo at Mozy with plenty of room to spare. I am guessing you & Erica are among the few that are the exception rather than the rule. πŸ˜‰

      • Unborn children??? VERY funny! LOL

Nah ... But things accumulate FAST if one is a 'packrat'. Funny thing is, it's pretty much all my online biz stuff and my day trading stuff. It DOES add up! heh heh

Like I said, I wasn't dissing Mozy's backup service, but I didn't appreciate the fact that they waited until a couple of weeks before their switchover date before they notified me about it. There wasn't alot of notice ... at least I never received any before then. So I then figured it became more cost effective to switch to CrashPlan.

It's ALL good. Key is to keep important data backed up.

        Thanks for the post.

        Rick Wilson aka CorpRebel 😎

        • Erica Cosminsky says

They must like you. Mozy jacked my rate up.

And NO, no unborn children for me. I'm a compulsive backer-upper. I have a Cisco server here and off site and I even back up my Dropbox folder on Crashplan. Since I offer it as an additional service to my clients, I'd rather have redundancy than the crazy possibility that my computer and their computers would crash on the same day... I'm sure it could happen.

          • Cynthia LaLuna says

Hi Rick and Erica, I switched to CrashPlan after 3 happy years with Mozy.

Like Rick, I was going to have to pay $330/year - we also ran a professional photography studio, and high-res photos take up a LOT of space. If I were just backing up the web-resolution design work we do, the standard plan would have been fine for us, too.

I also back up my Dropbox folder to CrashPlan! Although CrashPlan does keep the files on their own servers as well. It's belt/suspenders/rope/shoestrings.

  4. Well, of course yes! I do.
There are plenty of options to back up data but there is one fundamental question and that is reliability. I mean you can back up data on an external hard drive but what if that drive crashes due to a shock or if that gets stolen. However, online data backup solutions answer these questions, but the only factor that comes into play is cost which is justified by the answer that how crucial your data is.

    • True. And honestly, at under 6 bucks a month - it's well worth it. My data is priceless to me. From photos and letters that cannot be replaced, to work files that would put me months behind if they were to disappear.

It only takes losing it once to realize just how much it's worth to you.

  5. serrajuniper says

Shame on me for crossing my fingers thinking that the end of the post will read:... and this is absolutely free!

In this era go for free and you will jeopardize whatever you have. If you insist and go for it, for free, then the files that matters to you are not really important.

  6. Last year my husband kept nagging and nagging at me about getting signed up with Mozy (he knows nothing about computers). I finally gave in and did it. So very easy. The next week I somehow got a nasty virus that I couldn't get rid of. I had to reset my computer back to factory settings. Everything was gone. But, it wasn't! I had Mozy. The restore was simple. A few clicks and I was done. It's a great service.

    • I agree - and the restore is the true test. What a relief at how simple it was. Now I don't even break a sweat if a computer goes nuts on me. πŸ™‚

  7. Like Rick I've been using Mozy for quite a while and I'm now testing CrashPlan and I really like what I've seen. It just runs and you never know it and the prices are great too!

My only problem with Mozy in the last few years is my main machine is a mac which they do support. However, for a long time whenever they did a mac update it broke the backup. First it was that automatic updates where breaking it and then because automatic updates weren't being done(by Mozy's recommendation), that broke it. But they have gotten much better on that score.

I'm going to do some more testing before I switch completely over.

    Jeff

  8. Been looking around for a decent backup service. Anytime I use physical drives here at the office, I'm alway concerned that if they get lost or damaged... I have no recourse. Going to check out Mozy, since everyone seems to be agreeably pleased

  9. jane from faux floral arrangements says

In my previous life I was an IT consultant, and of the things that surprised me was how little attention companies, and I'm talking BIG companies paid to their backups. The tales I could tell ... !
And once we did convince them to back up their files it was almost impossible to convince them to move the backups off site. In my last consultancy job, the delightful (if naive) computer manager told me that I was out of touch, and today's hardware just doesn't fail.
And that was when I realized I was too old for IT and it was time to do something interesting.
It's great that we can now backup across the net, I don't know the mozy service myself, but I'm off to check it out.

  10. Anne from silk gerber daisies.com says

Oh wow. Ive been using a plugin to backup my blog and stuff, but I have a huge number of flower pictures and they would be expensive to replace, so I'll be checking mozy out - I didn't know such a service existed!

  11. Oh, I know that i need to backup everything, but it is something that I never get done...

I am now uploading everything to my hosting account from computer, but I think I also should need to backup everything what is on that server...

Thanks for a great article, I will use your advice!

    • It's not really a good idea to backup data from your computers to your hosting account. It would be easy to use up your disk space allotment.

First, most hosting services don't allow it. Check the TOS (terms of service) of your web host.

Since HostGator is a popular web host, I'll use them as an example ... their TOS states:

"Using a shared account as a backup/storage device is not permitted, with the exception of one cPanel backup of the same account. Please do not take backups of your backups."

While many web hosts like HG say on their site that they have "unlimited bandwidth and "disk space", in reality that isn't accurate. They always have their exceptions in their TOS. They (hosting services) ALWAYS oversell their "shared hosting" services. So check the TOS of your web host to make sure. IF they feel you are overusing their resources (even tho they say you get 'unlimited", they can (and have) suspended services until situation has been rectified.

IF you are uploading only a small amount of data from your PC, it's likely no one will notice, tho. Just be careful. πŸ˜‰

That's why using an online backup service is the better choice.

      Just my 3 cents...

      Rick Wilson aka CorpRebel 😎

  12. Doug Hudiburg says

I use Carbonite for my online backup service. It's such a comforting feeling to know that all my files are backed up and restorable.

I went for an embarrassingly long time without backups, then backed up to an external hard drive, and finally about 2 years ago to online backup.

  13. Hey Lynn! I just did a series on my blog which may be helpful to your readers. It includes screenshots and covers Mozy, SugarSync, Dropbox and Box. :o)

I've been reluctant to sign up to yet another subscription service, but admittedly one of my least favorite tasks is manually backing up my laptop onto my office server (I'm actually delinguent in this regard). But, you've forced me to revisit the "on-the-cloud" backup with Mozy's access to my files from my mobile phone. That is a clearly a nice value-add. I'm glad you revisited this topic and recommend Mozy. I'm going to check them out.

Come to think of it, you think I'd have learned my lesson by now because about 14 months ago my laptop fried. I was quoted $500 to retrieve my data and that was not a guarantee my data could be retrieved. I spent a few days re-installing software and getting my new computer going again. It was a disaster. I trust your recommendations, so I'm confident I don't have to research this service any further. And yes, if I buy, I'm using your affiliate link because I really appreciate the info.

  15. I'm glad to have come across this today as I have been very concerned about what to do for backing up. I have been using external hard drives, but definitely would like a more secure option. This is great stuff.

Now my question is, what do you do when you have all your HD family videos on your hard drive? This will eat up that memory limit quickly along with music and pictures. And I would hate to lose those. Especially since my other video camera was stolen with 6 years of family videos with it. Very sad and don't want that to happen again. Would love to hear what everyone does for these larger files.

    Thanks!

    Tyy

  16. I backup online too. It would be too painful to lose all my files. I have an external hard drive, and while it worked great for a while, the dratted thing keeps having formatting issues, so online backup is far simpler to use.

Tyy, I would suggest burning HD family videos to a DVD and mailing copies to family members in a different area. That way if you get hit by a natural disaster or computer disaster you can still get your videos back in a reasonable time without eating up all your memory limit.

  17. HI,

Just curious, is this the same for backing up websites? Do you store it in Mozy? I just learned about backing up in c-panel and downloading to the computer, I guess then that file would be backed up to Mozy? Any other suggestions for backing up wordpress websites?

    Thanks for such valuable information!

  19. Judy von Kleeck says

Being married to an IT guy, well you know I'm backing up my data (if I didn't it would sure make for some chilly nights!). Mozy is what my husband recommended. I agree Lynn that I also love the Restore option. It's not often I need to use it, but boy do I let out a huge sigh of relief knowing that what I need to go back to is only a click or two away!

  20. I've also heard good things about Crashplan, but to be honest, all of my "important" stuff fits within the 50 GB for $6 a month. The one thing I do wish for is a Mozy client for Linux, since I'm already running it on my Mac and PC, and now... even my iPhone.

  21. Latrisha Jacobs says

I love mozy. My computer crashed and I lost all my babies pictures, important documents, product documents...everything. I got a new computer and installed mozy, logged into my account, and presto. I so heart them! And you can't beat the price!I haven't tried the new mobile apps...but I am going to test them out TODAY!

  22. Lynn:

Great topic...I have an entire site dedicated to it:) I've been using Carbonite myself for the past 2+ years.

I like Mozy too but with the amount of data I have backed up (over 200GB), they are too expensive now that they don't offer unlimited backup for a flat fee. Carbonite is the only online backup provider with unlimited backup for a flat fee and I wonder how long it will last. I'll enjoy it will it lasts, I guess.

One thing I want to recommend to everyone, don't rely on ANY online backup solution as your sole backup strategy. I still do weekly backups to an external hard drive. You should backup to an external drive regularly and then use these online backup providers for convenience (i.e. when you're on the road) and as cheap insurance in case your external drive crashes.

    Travis Van Slooten

  23. I agree. I *highly* recommend using more than one backup method no matter what it is.

My strategy in a nutshell is:

Save everything to an external drive as the default
Save some stuff on my C drive as well
    Use carbonite.com for primary backups
My Quicken data file and files I use out of the office frequently are in my dropbox
Certain files are at mozy (due to space limit)

I think I probably have too many backups, yes I'm a little bit paranoid.

  24. I tried Mozy and can say that both of them giving you a very good service. After cutting the unlimited backup space, i cahnged to Updatestar Online Backup. It has unlimited storage and a cheap price (4,99 € / 5,83 $). If you want to change from another online backup service you can save another 30$ http://client.updatestar.com/en/onlinebackup/competitiveupgrade/
    IΒ΄m very happy with this.

  25. Thanks for the recommendation, Lynn! So far I'm been backing up my data the old fashioned way - I have a 60 GB external hard drive and it's been working out for me. But I have to remember to initiate the backup daily (and I don't always do that). I've been thinking about switching to an automated online backup solution but the options I researched were too expensive. However, I can't really complain with the $6 a month option from Mozy so looks like I'll have to give it a shot.

  26. For online backup of local drives we use Memopal which supports multiple machines and multiple IP addresses on the same account.

We also do Google Docs Backup to a local hard drive:
    http://goo.gl/TVm34

    And Gmail Backup
    http://goo.gl/jJByF

In addition to server backup by the host I also use Backup Wizard
    cPanel>Files>Backup Wizard
One click backup of all sites which you can save to a local machine.
    Also has a restore function.

This is the next layer of backup redundancy we're about to put in.
    http://goo.gl/amkIu
We'll be using them for local video storage, local backups and file sharing between offices.
But also looks good for large file data sharing with VAs.

If you see a backup freak you're probably looking at a former data loss victim.

  27. Thanks Lynn for this post. I now see the need to back up my site-very scared now. I'll get to it immediately.

  28. Karl Kaufen says

Heard some sad stories about admins who didn't think about backup.. now they do πŸ™‚ as to me- now I am really thinking of making it happend!

  29. Allen Walker says

I'm using an external hard drive, but perhaps I should consider this... πŸ™‚

Though I don't think that just $5.99 a month will cut it for me... LOL.

Do you backup all your PC files, or just some of the more important ones?

  30. I have used Carbonite for 2 years now, and glad I had it when my hard drive crashed.

Wouldn't feel safe without a backup

  31. Thanks for the gentle "prod" on this Lynn. I've been intending to get a little more conscientious about backing up but never seem to quite get round to it. Your recommendation on Moxy is good enough for me.

The backup was very simple to implement and you can't complain about the price. The home plan gives me more Gb than I currently need so I am happy.

    Thanks again.

  32. It is very essential to save your all files at some offline place. I think Mozy is the best offer at reasonable price.

  33. Chris Welber says

There are two types of backup services:
One's like Mozy, ibackup.com that are entry level and designed mostly for saving your data only, and those like my and other companies offer called a called Backup and Disaster Recovery solutions.

Here is a link to check it out:
http://thegenesysconsultinggroup.com/data_protection.html. These backups image an entire system and provide off-site automatic backups as well as bare metal restore if the whole system goes down, or your hard drive crashes.

A BDR solution takes in to account not just backing up your data but the ability to save an entire image of the server or workstation so you can bring it up virtual version of it or do what is called a "bare metal restore", these solutions can be expensive but when deciding how to go with the backup and disaster recovery of your systems you also need to consider the cost of being down completely while you rebuild a dead system.

I have an inexpensive small office version of the BDR solution as an blog post here:
    http://omguru.com/omgurucom-business-technolo/2011/2/12/the-right-backup-system-and-backup-software-will-save-your-b.html

Normally I would not put in links, I am only doing it Lynn because I am an IT consultant and professionally do this so I am happy to answer people's questions or offer any help.

I think you need three kinds of backups:
    1. Data backups where are immediately accessible in the raw file format
    2. an Image backup of your entire system for disaster recovery as opposed to data only loss.
    3. An off-site backup.

Many folks have only one or none of the above in place and they are a disaster waiting to happen.

    Backup today ! :-).

    On my blog

  34. I use external hard disk to backup the important data from my PC. I haven't heard about Mozy. Yet i have not tried any online database backup service like Mozy. You have introduced very information and feature of Mozy. Now i am thinking to try this data backup service.

  35. This is an excellent topic. You are so right the important part is in the restore. How hard is it to do and how easy is it to find your data. I use Kompozer as a backup but I did need to do a restore a few years ago and was aggravated by how hard it was to access my email files. They are backed up but finding them is the trick if you use Outlook ( which I did at the time.) It did get me to switch to gmail which is a good thing but I wonder if they have fixed the problem.

  36. I used Mozy for a while but my computer was crashing all the time, probably because it was too old. Now I am using Carbonite and I am very happy with it.

I also backup my data to an external drive every day if I manage to remember it and every two or three weeks to an additional external drive.

My next step is a drive image backup, but the last time I checked I found it too complicated.

  37. I know I am past due and MUST make an immediate decision. So as a reader Mozy or Crashplan. Yikes. Hard to decide but a given have to do. I'm on MAC and if crash, then ouch for sure. So both back up entire hard drive including pictures and mp3, etc.? Thanks.

  38. Ruth Martin says

Thanks Lynn!! I have been on the lookout for a better back up system. I am going over there right now!

  39. External harddrives and USB flash drives have become so cheap, it's super inexpensive to use them for back ups.

Personally, I have an external harddrive we use for backups, as well as my Netbook which I sync with my desktop via Microsoft Office and SharePoint. Whenever I'm home, the files sync up together based on the last one modified. LOVE that option, since no matter where I'm at the files are all there, plus I feel better knowing I'll always have at least one copy no matter what happens. πŸ˜‰

  40. Phil Wong says

For the longest time I have been backing up on external drives and thumbdrives but to date have only lost one set of data to a notebook thief.

However, I'm in the TB range (Power Packrat for data) and will want to be looking at Crashplan or other at reasonable prices.

I don't mind reinstalling software (the geek in me) because it does help me trim off some of the excesses and helps me tweak the new PC/notebook to make it work faster. Thanks for the recommendation(s) guys. πŸ™‚

  41. Natalie Akpele says

Lynn, you always seem to know just when I need to be reminded to do something. I never took the Mozy plung. I thought my external hard drive was enough. And although I have not had any of my computer crazy on me, I think its time to be prepared just in case.

So, I am very appreciative of the reminder!!

  42. Ayush Gupta says

This seems to be good for one of my friend. He plays with his PC and his PC fail day after other. I will tell him about this service for sure.

  43. Hi Lynn,

You are probably going to jump all over me for this, but I NEVER use online backup services. I don't like too many third-party services having access to my data--my hosting company is just about enough. Having said that, I can see why many people use them; the thought of losing all one's data in a computer-crash is very unsettling indeed. I prefer to backup my all my data on external drives, some I keep on-site, some off-site. and do you realize that when these services fail, it can have devastating impact on businesses? Amazon's AWS had problems recently and it affected some big players. Here's a link to the story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110421/ap_on_hi_te/us_tec_amazon_outages

Incidentally, the integrity issue is the reason I don't use server based password management services like Lastpass.

At any rate, your article was very insightful, at least now I know what my options are.

    Thanks,

    Everet

  44. I would opt for SafeCopy online backup. For it is what iam currently using as my backup service. It is just so compatibl with both my Mac and Windows computers.I think there are very many good online backup services out there.

@Brad,I love Dropbox when it come to sharing files but whenever it comes to backing up online then i prefer SafeCopy backup. Thanks for the article. It is so interesting.

  45. Does Mozy offer an incremental backup service. This would make the whole process that much easier for me.

    Steve

    • I'm not sure, Steve - you can find out on their site though. Mine backs up in the background and hasn't caused any issues at all in the several years I've been using it.

  46. I've been thinking about off-site backups a lot lately. I have been seeing Carbonite commercials a lot lately. I have always been leery about online backup because I would hate for gosh knows who to have access to all of my personal files

I use currently an 80GIG external hard drive (about the size of a book) but that stays on-site. I have a 6 GIG flash drive that stays in my purse (about the size of a makeup compact) and I have 2 other stick size flash drives that are about 2 GIG a piece and those are in my purse as well.

Needless to say.....if my purse were to get snatched at the same time as my house being compromised, then all of my backup is useless.

I'm also not good at updating all of my devices when I add or edit files.

So, now I'm revisiting the online backup method.

My last computer completely crashed a couple years ago. Fortunately for me the local computer repair tech down the road was able to get ALL of my files off of the computer after it crashed. It cost $50.00, but I would have practically paid anything to get all my pics and personal/business files back. I was lucky that the virus or whatever crashed thew system had not affected the files. He scanned them first obviously before making the discs.

Anyway, tonight I looked up Carbonite and $59.00 per year seemed reasonable, but I remembered that you posted about this subject a while back. I searched on your site and found this post.

    Do you still use Mozy?

Do you trust your files with them?

Have their servers ever been hacked and data stolen/compromised?

I ask because it seems like every other week some major corp announced that their systems were hacked, like a health care company or credit card company, department store etc.

  47. Another thought or two......

I would probably still use all of my external drives just in case the internet blew up and I could not access Mozy, etc.

Also, I know someone who also uses the 80 GIG or higher type external hard drives. She had one that stopped working and now keeps 2 of them just in case. Fortunately when she just had the one, all of her files where still on her computer. It's a shame when you have to have backups of backups of backups, but there are just too many variables....

I would absolutely freak out if I lost all of my pictures.

    • Yes, I am still using Mozy and have never had any issues with them - OR heard of them ever being compromised. They also now have great apps so you can access your files from your mobile devices (my iPad, Droid Razr, etc) on the go. Great when I'm at a conference and need a file from my desktop computer at home!

I love the peace of mind I have with Mozy. If all my computers crashed, or my house blew away in a tornado, I could grab a cheap laptop and get a hotel room - and restore my files and be right back in business. Which is a good feeling.
