I cheated on the SEO Quiz, and still failed it!

Here’s a little Saturday night fun for you: The SEO Quiz by SEOmoz.

I thought “Hey, this’ll be fun!” - Nice little ego boost, right? Not :-?

I failed it miserably and got labled an SEO NEWBIE… and I even cheated to get that score!

(Well, if you count trying to look up the answers in Google in a different window while taking the quiz LOL)

To be fair, its a fairly long quiz - 75 multiple choice questions - and some of them are a bit confusing or misleading. All said and done it was quite fun, and there is plenty to learn about SEO in the process. Here are a few of the SEO questions I totally flunked…

  • High quality links to a site’s homepage will help to increase the ranking ability of deeper pages on the same domain.

This was a true or false question, and I wavered on it. I finally chose “false” because choosing true would be making the assumption that the site had proper internal linking structure. My fault for not placing more emphasis on the keyword in that sentence, which was “ranking ability“.

  • Spammy sites or blogs begin linking to your site. What effect is this likely to have on your search engine rankings?

My Answer: It may negatively affect your rankings as search engines associate your site with bad neighborhoods on the web

Correct Answer: A very slight positive effect is most likely, as search engines are not perfectly able to discount the link value of all spammy sites

Cool…

  • A link from a PageRank “3″ page (according to the Google toolbar) hosted on a very strong, trusted domain can be more valuable than a link from a PageRank “4″ page hosted on a weaker domain.

Your Answer: FALSE
Correct Answer: TRUE

Uh… I wasnt sure what to define “weaker domain” exactly. Oops!

What I really liked about the SEO Quiz was that it gave you the correct answers, along with very detailed commentary, when it gave you your grade or score. Not only did it tell me what I got wrong, it told me what the right answer should have been - and why.

Just for kicks, here’s my Newbie Badge:

SEO Newbie - 67%

Thank goodness you dont have to be good at tests to get good rankings! LOL

Take the quiz for yourself: The SEO Quiz. Its fun! And you’ll probably learn something about SEO in the process. Feel free to show me up by leaving your score in the comment section below ;)

Best,
seo flunkie
