31GYL Day 24: Can Quizzes Build Your List?

It’s Day 24 in our Growing Your List challenge and we are in the Viral Marketing section of the guide. Today's suggestion is interesting: using a (hopefully viral) Quiz to grow your list.

For Day 24, refer to pages 58-59 in the
31 Day Guide to Growing Your List

I don't know about you, but using a Quiz is not something I'd ever really considered to grow my mailing list. It's definitely a creative angle, and one that may work better in some niches than others...

If you read the two pages (link above) in our free guide, you'll see some creative idea for different types of quizzes. You can also do a search on Google for Facebook Quiz to get even more creative ideas. There are apps that let you put quizzes directly on Facebook, but I was looking at them mainly for ideas.

You can also search set up online quiz for solutions if this is something you're interested in doing.

My advice:

If you want your quiz to go viral then you should limit the marketing you do throughout the process. Keep it light and fun if you want people to share it.

At the end of the quiz, when your app delivers the results, you might customize that page to offer them a free download. It needs to be highly relevant to the quiz and market, of course. You could lead into it by saying:

"Thank you for taking our Quiz! We would love to give you ___ (coupon code, free guide, etc) for participating. Let us know where to deliver it:"

(include opt-in form after)

Of course, my advice on contests and giveaways applies here too. Otherwise you could open yourself up to spam complaints.

Ideally you will have a way for them to share their results on Facebook, and also Tweet "I just took the XYZ Quiz at __! Find out what it says about YOU!" Using social media sharing will help your quiz go viral much more quickly.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Are fun quizzes something you might use in your own marketing strategy? Why or why not?

Best,

I tried the quiz concept on a site and it didn't work too well. But then I did it without really researching creative ways to do it. I'll be looking into it carefully in the guide you provide.

It seems to me a quiz could work well if you can deliver a custom answer (i.e. one of several) based on a series of responses. This way a quiz-taker feels they received value.

Either the quiz must address a pressing question many visitors have or have a high-entertainment value making it fun. I took the serious approach on my site, but maybe the entertaining approach is better.

  2. It works when the quiz is related to the niche. You can also try it with surveys, where the participant is asked a number of questions and receives the result via email. The viral component is something that I still have to work on. Difficult, but not impossible. (my motto: "Man who says it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it")

  3. People like to answer stuffs online so the idea of creating quizzes is really good and can help! The only thing I everybody must consider is to make this quiz fun and short in order to attract more participants.

Hello. I would like to include a quiz in my E-Zine, "AA-1 Designs E-Zine." I'm thinking of putting the quiz near the beginning of the e-zine, with the answers near the end of the e-zine. I've seen this method done in other e-zines. I'm still contemplating whether this would be a good strategy. I'm thinking it would add a light, fun flair to the e-zine. Also, something to provide reader participation. I heard years ago that art is suppose to make you think about what you're looking at. In order to make the quiz more light and fun, it would require subjects not too deep in thought. Maybe cartoon trivia, sports-related subjects, or funny quotes with choosing the correct author. So that's what I'm thinking about doing. If it seems to work, I'll continue. If not, I'll stop. It's that simple. Thank you for your time in reading this message. 5. I think this idea definitely has some merit, and will obviously work better in some markets than others.

The one that jumps to mind straight away is anything related to sports - who doesn't love a good sports quiz?

  6. Thats a great idea Terry, to engage visitors in an activity, I would try this on my blog but mainly i think it would work well for the predictions, like who will win next UFC with Opetion #1,2,3 🙂
