Traffic Question #5
from your traffic questions
James asked:
hi lynn~ my question is about driving traffic to a “million dollar homepage†like that of alex tew using search engines. we know search engines like content and less outgoing links from a site. since i want my site to sell many pixels, which means many outgoing links on the homepage, which SEO technique would you recommend?
How Do You Promote Pixel Sites?
Hi James,
If you'll remember, when most people saw MillionDollarHomepage.com for the first time, it was fairly new and had zero PageRank. This particular project was driven on buzz alone, including: word of mouth, press releases, news stories, etc.
There is a story on the Wall Street Journal about Alex Tew that outlines how he got his pixel site off the ground. According to WSJ, his strategy started with the use of his personal network, bloggers and the media.
Any website that is not text (or content) based, may have a hard time achieving top ten rankings in the major search engines. They key would be to rely on Buzz Marketing tactics, and to let other content-based websites "do the talking". All of these quality links on unique content pages will bring the web page up in the search results naturally.
That said, if you did want to rely on SEO (Search Engine Optimization), even in part, your first step would be Keyword Research. I would start simple, researching the word "pixel" and any associated phrases using tools like Overture and WordTracker. Make a list of those phrases, like "pixel advertising" and "buy pixels" etc, that may bring in targeted traffic.
You could then create content pages around each of those phrases. The idea is to funnel the traffic back to your "pixel home page" once they entered on one of these internal pages.
Obviously 'the new' has worn off of the Pixel Sites at this point, so you would need a fresh angle in order to use Buzz Marketing tactics. But the goal with any type of site like this, when looking for organic search engine traffic, is to either have lots of fresh content on your domain... or to generate enough interest for other people to write fresh content and link to your domain.

The problem with pixel sites is that, not only are they no longer new, but they have grown 'old' really fast. There's nothing really sticky about them and once the initial novelty wears off, well there's nothing compelling about them.
The trick would be to come up with a novel idea, it doesn't have to be ground-breaking, but something fresh usually generates it's own buzz
Agreed 😉
Lynn,
Thank you so much for your generous information.
Even though I have had a web site and been writing monthly columns for about 10 years by receiving your regular newsletters I realize how little I do know about internet technology. You are an inspiration.
You have inspired me to blog and I want to thank you for your recommendation guidance and clear direction as to the benefits and how I go about that.
I will definately be sharing your web site with my data base.
